Takes more than combat gear to make a man

Define something for your own.
Personally, being an adult would include for me:
- driving license
- job
- own appartment, for which you pay yourself
- partner
That's at least when I'd say that you're not a kid anymore.

That's the closest thing we have to a coming-of-age event, and it seems... lacking. It's a bunch of separate events that are usually pretty spread out, for one. For another, they're just things you do on your own. I'll have to look up some examples of what I find to be proper CoA events, but they should be one single thing, a challenge that one has to overcome using traits that are expected of an adult. And they should be social events and involve some of the local community or family. The trouble is that the very concept of community is pretty weak these days.

My good friend, I could not help but notice the smiling smiley at the end of your post. ;)

:) I thought it was the 'make more or less obscure song references with the 'men' theme thread ;)

Around here people used to say you'll be a man once you've completed your army bootcamp...I always thought that was silly, but there you go. The J's definition seems to make more sense (though I don't think the driver's licence or the partner are actually necessary for that more like you could make the driver's licence if you choose to and you have the maturity to live in a partnership if you choose so)

Yes. This thread encourages self-reflection that we might know more about others through knowing ourselves. Are we truly men, or are we overgrown boys playing at being men? By forcing the respondent to reflect upon his own level of maturity, this question asks not how society views the respondent, but how he views himself. This in turn helps to limn what manhood means in a modern society where traditional gender roles are rapidly fading and adolescence seems to stretch on well into legal adulthood.
I have a hard time seeing how the latter (redefinition of adulthood) is all that specific to males. I get that this is supposedly about antiquated mannerisms* and this weird brand of masochism centered around themes of "toughness", but... yeah... the premise is lacking in definition.

And i consider myself primarily a "person", which i guess could be translated as "overgrown boy/girl". :mischief:

Oh, wait, i should link some random article on the matter so as to appear like giving a frack.

Ok.

*Like going to chivalry defcon 1 because prostitutes.

Be you angels?

Nay!

We are but men.

In other words, female CFC members need not post here.

Calvin and Hobbes jokes aside, I certainly think there's a place for a distaff opinion in this thread. I don't want to send the message that this is some segregated thread. My apologies for giving the impression, Do You Real Want to Hurt Me for my error?

This may be a Once in a Lifetime chance to hear a woman's opinion of male self-image. Your opinion could very much be an Aha moment here. To that end, I very much think you should Stand and Deliver and provide your opinion. If there's a Clash, I trust you'll respond with "Take on Me," and vigorously defend your thoughts. I'm very much Hungry Like the Wolf for your thoughts. Sweet Dreams are made of diversity. Rest assured, your thoughts will not be a Message in a Bottle bound to wind up like a castaway on a tropical island. Certainly hearing a female voice on the matter would be The Cure for an all-male omphaloskepsis this thread could easily fall into.

Opening the topic up more broadly and to the rest of the board, some posts here I think support the premised offered by some Talking Heads that male adolescence has extended itself, perhaps unduly and without utility. What does this mean for society? In particular, what does the changing self-image of young men portend? Boys Don't Cry, but do men?

You mean good 80s music.

Spurious lies.

I don't understand the reference in the poll (or in this entire thread for that matter), so I won't vote.

But my definition of a man is a human male who isn't dependant on his parents or other close relatives for his livelihood.

Or possibly this:

Are you a man or a mouse?

BvBPL, I think you ran so far away with this thread. Sometimes girls just wanna have fun. You don't have to make in an obsession.
