Something is coming and I don't know what.

The Department of Homeland Security is set to purchase a further 21.6 million rounds of ammunition to add to the 1.6 billion bullets it has already obtained over the course of the last 10 months alone, figures which have stoked concerns that the federal agency is preparing for civil unrest.

To put that in perspective, during the height of active battle operations in Iraq, US soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammunition a month. Extrapolating the figures, the DHS has purchased enough bullets over the last 10 months to wage a full scale war for almost 30 years.

I can only surmise that sometime in the next few years those of us here in America will lose contact with the outside world. I doubt I'll live through this but we have the news that we have a grandchild coming. Perhaps some of us will survive to see freedom endure. I want to say to those of you who live far away, the core of this country are good people who only want to live in peace and prosperity with all. Don't believe all the stereotypes you hear about the American people.

Tell your children and grandchildren that when the time comes that if they are willing to extend an unclenched fist to our remnants there will no doubt be survivors here eager to grasp it in friendship.

You might want to tell your children and grandchildren to read the previous thread on this topic.

When the world economy collapses it is likely that the powers of the developed world will recognize that the evaporation of all this debt that is currently masquerading as wealth gives them, the elite, the opportunity to declare martial law. All dollars, yen, euros and other currency will cease to exist. Business will be nationalized and all freedoms will be suspended.

Never before in the history of the human race has technology existed to provide government with the tools to fully enslave the people. Not that it will be bloodless and I hope they will fail.

But yeah, people like some of you here will be the new Commissars and maybe one of you will rise to be the commander of a camp.

Maybe one of you will be the one to put the bullet behind my ear? Not if I can help it.

After all, everybody knows that police and federal agents don't really have to be proficient with firearms though constant practice. It is far better if they are completely incompetent in this regard. Right?

MisterCooper, you often forget that our and every other government of the world is staffed by just plain folks, not all of whom approve of everything their government does. The middle east has seen some of this in the past few years.

BTW, the closest thing we have in the US to the "brown shirts" of bygone times is not the US military; it is the gun toting extremists of the right. All they need is a charismatic leader to pull them all together through manufactured fear. That is the most likely path to real oppression in America. We are too dysfunctional for any other path to succeed.

This chap begs to differ.

Indeed. 'The Government' is not a monsterous organisation that wants to enslave people for fun; it is motivated, at its heart, by the desire to be re-elected and, in its limbs, the desire to do a good job and not be sacked. I think that last point is rather good, actually, although would counter that in the days of the Brownshirts German paramilitaries were the Weberian state - that is, the entity with a monopoly on the legitimate use of force - at times in Berlin. When the Spartacists attempted to seize power in 1918-19, the main brunt of the opposition to them were Freikorps: far-right and future Nazi paramilitaries. Clearly, the US government is in no danger of becoming weak enough to allow such a situation to occur in its territory.

Not even when we had actual, legit slavery?

So exactly how many years is that? 2? 4? Because I've been hearing about FEMA camps and the Federal Reserve deploying their own soldiers into neighborhoods for over 10 years now and I want to have a solid time frame for when I can legitimately call you a gullible old fool.

"Now" seems appropriate. Although "ever since you joined" would also work.

I hope that I am a gullible old fool.

Hold on a second. The technology does exist to enslave the human race right now. Maybe not fully but it could happen.

Just because we are trending towards A Brave New World doesn't mean 1984 can't happen.

The technology to enslave people has always exited, it just changes with the times. What keeps it at bay is that people really don't want to be enslaved and will at some point strenuously resist. There are many examples. People may act like stupid idiots much of the time, but when moved by their passions, the world will change.

Really no.

No, really yes. My evidence is that people have always overthrown the worst dictators and most oppressive regimes. What is yours?

All things take time. Besides, we don't know the full conditions in N. Korea, who is to say there haven't been rebellions or attempted coups?

There are only two types of governments: failed ones, and ones that haven't failed quite yet. ;)

Yes, give it time. World efforts are already underway to end that regime. "Patience grasshopper."

Do I detect a faint whiff of approval for George W. Bush ending the Hussein regime decades earlier than it would have naturally occured? :)

There is always hope, at least until immortality is discovered.
