Well guys the media tends to overdramatize many things but in the end what it's dramatizing is facts. Terrorists bombed people here, some nut leader has these nutty ideas there, a bombs being built somewhere, and an asian kid blew some other kids away very near. Irrational fear is the burden of the idiot who fears irrationally instead of rationally understanding that yup there's problems that need confronting.

It strikes me that virtually nobody is willing to take the vt shooting as just a random psycho event. Some wackos are going to blame the fact that he's asian, or blame the fact that he was a loner, or whatever. And of course if you're sympathetic with any of those groups (or if you're not american), you blame it on the fact that he lives in America. So few people willing to admit what strikes me as most probably the truth: just a random nutbag.

What would you sentence him to?

1) Playing Civ on Deity?
2) Playing Quake with his gun replaced by an inflatable banana?
3) Have to stay in a teenage US guild in WoW for a year without swearing?
4) Let him go only when he can win Europa Universalis as Poland?

Any more suggestions?

Anyway, regarding the topic, there is hardly anyone I know that majored in compsci that did not play violent games at some point of their lives (and I know a **** ton of these people, including myself). Many of them opted to create new interesting mods (which may be maps) of their favorite games. And when you make mods, you tend to make them to emulate something you and your friends can identify with. It's a lot more fun fragging each other in a virtual representation of some place your friends all know and love than some random abandoned warehouse scene. Countless people have done it and not turn out to be psychopaths.

Way back when, a couple friends and I created a Zork-like game based on our high school. Fast forward a decade or two and it would have been a Doom WAD.
