What can I do for more mild allergic reactions to toxins other then dealing with the swelling?

I happen to have a rather strong reaction to deer flys and I got bit on the foot while fishin' this mornin' and it's makin' it all hurty and ungood especially when walkin'. :(

I've heard amputation is quite good at removing pain from the affected area.

If you keep taking caffeine (whether you eat it or drink it), you'll just develop caffeinism (coffee addiction), which isn't really so bad. All that will happen is that you will crave coffee and get a headache if you don't have any.
That's me, caffeine addict. I need at least 2 cans of Mountain Dew a day (54mg of caffeine, either per can or per serving. I don't remember).

And I could almost swear it's a migraine at times. Very painful, but I suppose caffeine withdrawal symptoms (if that's what it is) can vary from person to person.

Caffeine is my poison of choice. Maybe a little achohol, in vodka form, but not all that much. Unless you consider the computer a drug, in which case I'm a hardcore addict of that too :goodjob:

Now, while on the topic of migraines:

I've heard from some people (kind of overheard) that some level dosage of LSD can wipe out a migraine pretty quickly (no I do not know from personal experience). Then they went on to say that you can take something else to basically eliminate the effects of the LSD before you begin to really hallucinate.

So is true at some level? If so, any idea what the drug is that you could give someone to counter the LSD?

Or should I just slap the next person I hear saying this because it couldn't be further from the truth?

My foot is still itchy, my reactions to deer flys seems worse now, should I be concerned that someday I'll be bit by one and it'll like make my insides outsides and my outsides insides?

I recall earlier in this thread you mentioned that Vitamin C isn't all it's cracked up to be. Well I was listening to this informercial on the radio and they were claiming that when you get poisoned and have to go to the hospital, the first thing you often get is a "vitamin C drip". Is that true at all?

Tangentially, how is it that so many commercials and whatnot can basically lie to people about medical things without apparently getting in trouble?

My auntie claims that bakin' soda when applied to an insect bite helps to somehow extract the toxic stuffs. Have you heard of this before? Is there a lick of truth to it?

Depends on the bite. I don't know much about deer flies, but they don't sound as if they're poisonous at all.
Perhaps your bite is mildly infected.

Probably, you could order some kind of allergy test from a doctor.

And you're lucky that only your feet itches. My uncle almost died when a wasp stung him(those tubes(what are they called?) to lungs swelled really bad).

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's an allergic reaction caused by my crappity crap immune system. I constistantly get this with deer flies but not horse flies, or mosquitos or any other biting insect.

There's a TED talk from the inventor of a device to reduce migranes. You should give it a watching. You'll learn quite a bit about migranes from it.

1. What's with these dark circles under my eyes? I know there's another thread floating around about it, but could it just be because I squint hard most of the time? Am I giving myself black eyes, as it were? Or do I need more iron or something?

2. Doctors always ask if a pain I'm feeling is "internal" or not. I never can answer them. How am I supposed to know? It just hurts in this general region... Is it my pectoral muscle or my lung? I don't know, dammit!

3. My right side generally feels very stiff/slightly painful. I also tend to lean to my right and sleep solely on my right. Is my liver about to die or do I just need to do stretches and sleep more evenly?

4. Are you a PA or a specialist? What is your opinion of nurses/PAs? What about if they corrected a mistake of yours?

5. My nurse friend says that people who have had holes drilled in their heads/brain fluid removed shouldn't have the same person in the room with them for more than 15minutes, along with keeping the lights off and TV off most of the time. Is there any reason to this (she thinks it's just idiocy)?

6. If I have minor rectal bleeding right at the anus, why do they need to check my entire colon for problems? That tube went in a couple feet too far, imo...

7. Do doctors have a thing for people that keep themselves especially clean? Have you ever complimented a patient on their cleanliness?

8. Vegetarianism: good/bad, thoughts? My parents are convinced I'm slowly killing myself.

9. Have you ever tapped a patient on the butt after an anal exam (sorry for the anal fixation, but I've had a bit of experience with these docs)? Is this common practice? I've never been patted on the back after a physical or anything... but more doctors should start. If I'm in good health, I deserve a pat on the back or something! :)

10. Are there any ways to make the blood testing process less fainting prone? Three vials and I'm out. My body is really sensitive to anything vascular. Anything extra in or out just messes with me like no other.

It's true in the sense that you will trip out so much that you'll forget your head hurts.

Is there anything wrong with getting Tetanus shots too often?

Nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't confer any additional benefit.

My foot is still itchy, my reactions to deer flys seems worse now, should I be concerned that someday I'll be bit by one and it'll like make my insides outsides and my outsides insides?

No.

Sometimes an alcoholic will get an infusion of something called the "banana bag." It's a cocktail of multivitamins, thiamine, folate, magnesium and some other assorted substances. It's given because alcoholics are often vitamin deficient. The name comes from the yellow-green tint of the fluid.

The reason there are so many lying informercials is because they are counting on there being more gullible people than concerned citizens. The only way to shut these operations down is for someone to report it, and no one usually bothers because those who are buyers believe in it, and those who don't just don't care.

I have one word for you, sir: hypochondriasis.

A few insect stings can be neutralised by the application of common household substances, like biocarb for acid stings (e.g. formic acid from ants) and lemon juice for alkaline stings. The problem is that you have to accurately identify the beasty that bit/stung/scratched you, look up what method that species uses to cause the pain, and then work out the correct remedy, if any, and apply it. It's much easier to just jump up and down and swear, and maybe use an antihistamine cream. Keep a sharp lookout for the deer flies, and try to swat them before they bite (or at least in revenge). Meanwhile, get an insect repellant like DDT, and wear as many clothes as you can bear.

Probably, you could order some kind of allergy test from a doctor.

Take your pick-ture.

Was he stung in the throat, or many times, or was he one of those unlucky hypersensitive people who go into anaphylactic shock at one sting? If the latter, has he done any research into carrying a medic-alert bracelet, or getting an adrenaline pen or anything?

What happens if you eat D-aminoacids?

EDIT: If found something on the web:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=2883643&dopt=AbstractPlus

Studies were conducted on the effects of feeding D-amino acids on growth rate and D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) in chick kidney. The crystalline amino acid (AA) diet provided seven amino acids either in the L-form or the DL-form at two concentrations (DL- or .5 DL-AA diets) with all diets containing equal amounts of L-amino acids. Weight gains of chicks fed the DL-AA diet were consistently lower than those fed the L- or .5 DL-AA diet. Kidney DAAO activity was significantly higher in chicks fed either the DL-AA or .5 DL-AA diet as compared with the L-AA diet. Kidney DAAO activity was essentially the same in chicks fed the DL- and .5 DL-AA diets. Increasing the nonspecific nitrogen in the diet had no effect in alleviating growth depression of the DL-AA.

Poor chicks.

I was asking this question because I was thinking about how a vegetarian only diet can be deficient in amino acids, and those can be synthesized, but the most difficult part is to isolate the L-aminoacids, so I was thinking what happens if you eat the racemic mixture containing D and L amino acids.

I know to get the required amino acids, a vegetarian has to eat a lot of different foods. I'm just going to settle for eating meat.

Sophie 378@ He's one of those supersensitive people, and he has gone through some kind of hyposensitization to cure it. I think it was his thracea that was swellen. Not sure though.
