Ask a Dutchman!

I seriously have no idea what you are talking about...
he's talking about the origin of my avatar. For the rest there's no relation to the topic of this thread.
It's good, in hindsight, that he doesn't know, he's not been polluted. ;)

I don't know about vennoten, but Humon Comics avatars should be verboten (except Sister Sweden).

Why should humon comic avatars be verboden (use a 'd' instead of a 't' if you to use Dutch for 'forbiddem' :) )

Anywho, seeing as it is 150 years since the abolishment of slavery, former dictator and now respectable politician Mr Bouterse made a statement today to a cheering crowd that Dutch "torture and inhuman affairs" should be forgiven. During a remembrance occasion in Amsterdam yesterday, Dutch vice-premier Asscher offered "deep regret and remorse" over Dutch slavery history.

The words spoken by current Surinam head of state Bouterse are remarkable, as he usually refers to the Dutch in negative terms. Not surprising as the president has been convicted in absentia for drug trafficking, and he is still a suspect in the - now suspended - investigation into the 1982 December Murders, as well as the 1986 Muriwano slaughter on 39 Surinam inhabitants by the Surinam armed forces.

Don't you have laws preventing dictators from holding public office?

Not that I'm aware off, and even if we did, it wouldn't affect Surinam, since it isn't part of the Netherlands anymore to begin with.

Ah… then, let the Surinamians (Surinamese?) take care of their own idiotic ruler.

Well, there was a lot of criticism and controversy when he rose to power, so I wouldn't exactly say Surinam has become a black hole in the Dutch National psyche.

Both countries could just start polderising (do you have a word for that in Dutch?) and meet somewhere in the Atlantic.

Since we're discussing heads of state, does Albert of Belgium abdicating have any influence on the Netherlands?

Abdications are so April

One consequence so far: the official state visit of Willem-Alexander to Belgium that was planned for October will probably have to be cancelled. Apparently it is customary for a "new" monarch to visit a longer reigning colleague, and not the other way around. So the planned visit will probably be repalcedby a visit of our Filip to the Netherlands instead :crazyeye:

Pope Benedict had already abdicated in February ;-)

Yeah, well, but the Dutch are protestants.

I just meant in a tongue-in-cheek way that the Dutch don't appear to care much for the Pope.

(althought it's an interesting statistic to see how many Protestants have simply dropped religion altogether )

how many communists have your forefathers killed in ex-colonies? and do you like tulips?
