As far as I know, original Western TV shows are not shown in Russian TV.

None at all? Is this a copyright or IP thing or some other legality that prevents Russian stations from picking them up? Maybe a financial decision?

Follow-up Question: Do Russian cable/TV packages contain only Russian TV stations or ones from other countries as well? Or do you mean that such shows are not shown in Russia anywhere? (unless you get it over the air if you live close to a border or whatever)

If by TV shows you meant popular series like Game of Thrones, they are translated and shown in Russia, of course. I might misunderstand your original question.
Some are shown on TV, some on streaming platforms like Netflix, etc. Russia is not much different from Western countries in this regard.

I thought you were talking about TV entertainment programs, like reality shows - there are some Russian adaptations, but original Western programs are not shown.

Also not much different from the West. TV packages commonly contain hundreds of channels including foreign ones. Some are translated to Russian, though not too many and they are not very popular. IIRC there was Euronews and BBC in Russian, may be few others too.

I wouldn't do that personally myself unless I talked to the guy and he said it was ok. I would have just shared the snoring sound.

Yeah, that was the first red flag for me and as I continued watching it only confirmed my opinion. Credit should be given where due - he's films interesting stuff and does research on the info he provides.

True, but I think he knew enough Russian to at least try to work the situation out. I assume he had not because he made no reference to it in his video (and he'd talk about it for sure). Instead, he pointed to the guy "he's the one snoring" during the video. Real classy guy.

The most NZ like city in Russia I've found on YouTube. Parts of it remind me of our capital and my city which is similar in size.

Botanical gardens, the hills, architecture in some places.

Think I would like it there. 41 degree's in summer is a couple if degrees warmer than a very hot day here where you go to the beach or nearest lake/river/pool.

It has architecture like my city, hot springs like parts of the North Island and botanic gardens like every town and city here.

Lots of green areas as well I like that.

Several questions about WW2/Great Patriotic War. I may have watched a war movie.

1. Growing up in 80's/90's we had British and American comedies about the war. Basically they mocked the Nazis. Any Russian/Soviet equivalents?

2. In Russian/Soviet schools do you learn much about the western front/Pacific/North Africa campaigns or 3/9/1939- 22/6/41 western allies?

3. Any Russian movies made about other fronts in the war?

4. Any foreign war movies/shows popular in Russia?

1. There's one movie that comes to mind, the 1979 film called "Country trip of Sergeant Tsybulya". It doesn't even have an English wikipage. Normally, considering the losses that the Soviet Union suffered during the war, the whole "comedy" genre was considered to be too rude for this topic and frowned upon. After 1991 it became more acceptable.

2. Soviet and early Russian schools have two subjects: "Domestic History" and "World History" from about 5-6 grade to 11th, covering all there's to cover with increased complexity. Therefore history of XX century and WW2 is covered in both subjects with different focus. I'd say the Pacific campaign is not very well studied, but the North African campaign, fighting in China and the opening of the Western front are fairly well covered. I'd say that in terms of casualties and numbers the Pacific campaign is not as important as it is made out to be in Western books. So, yes, Soviets and Russians did study about other war fronts in WW2.

3. I'm not a specialist here, but I doubt many were made. Where it was appropriate to show allied forces they were shown (for example Meeting at the Elba), but I think it was considered a "no go area" and filming trash like "Enemy at the Gates" was considered indecent. Maybe some movies about other fronts were made, but they never became as popular.

Polish TV series "4 tankmen and a dog" was very popular in USSR. Not a comedy, but it was made for kids, thus wasn't too grim and there were quite a few funny moments.

The movie is complete propaganda garbage, unfortunately.
I read about half of the book, it was not bad actually, much better than movie. Though it was written during Cold War and a bit outdated by modern standards. Soviet archives were not accessible to Western historians back then.
