Ask a teacher

About one third of our school are immigrant children, many of whome do not speak english. In my form we have

1 philipino
1 american
4 iranian
2 bulgarians
11 ethnic english
1 lebanese
1 chinese
1 morrocan

students who were born here with parental origins
1 india
1 mauritius

There was an Italian boy and he had a really strong accent "whatsa matta you ?" (no offence)

The American get ganged up on, or does is he somewhat popular?

What was the hardest subject for you in school (if no one has asked yet)?

This one time. Obviously I haven't shut this thread down yet.

However it should be noted that in the future all "Ask A..." threads should be cleared with a moderator.

Duely noted. can I start a "Ask a homicidal maniac thread" ? :mischief:

Did you... dance?

Yep. And me and some of the lads crashed the party next door...

Ummm... do you enjoy marking work?

Welcome to CFC lizzie ;)

Heh. I don't mind actually, especially when it's good quality.

Have you ever gotten so angry at your students that if you'd had a pistol you would have shot them? :mischief:

And this I suspect only really applies in the US, but the teacher's union apparently is opposed to merit pay in favor of across-the-board pay raises. Do you oppose merit pay; and if you do, does your opposition depend on whether it is instead of or in addition to general raises), and if you don't, why do you think the union does?

 I'd be more worried about kids shooting me...

Actually it applies to the UK too, we have a "performance related pay" after about 6 years of teaching you need to defonstrate certain professional skills to move up the pay scale... I think it's more or less an OK idea, although some of the evidence can be subjective it is possible to aquire an idea of the quality of a teacher. Most of them are really dedicated staff. The problem can be that sometimes management don't give the correct support to staff and pass the blame of a schools problems onto the frontline teachers.

Not at all, if anyhing her american accent definately adds to her coolness in the eyes of the other kids. She is popular (I think!)

The hardness of subjects depends alot on individual ability. I think Design and Technology is really hard for students because it requires students to bring together lots of different skills, for example researching, Designing, sketching, idea generation, application of technology creatively to solve practical problems, computer aided design and manufacture, and technical skill to put those ideas into an effeective design soloution. But on the other hand, it can be hugely rewarding when they complete something and the lightbulb clicks above their heads.

I have a fervant hatred for teachers. :mischief: Here's a question for you.

Edit: actually, I'll remove this question. There's a real risk of mod-sponsered holiday for me.

I'd run for it can't say i didn't try.

Sorry you hate teachers.

Ever had a student track you down online/in real?

Not yet, either way. A student would have to be really mental to do that ;-) . No, to be honest, they're just not that bothered. School is like work for most of them (some really hate it) and they like to be reminded of the place as little as possible when they're not there, I think...
