Ask a Turk

So why did y'all name your country that? Or did you name it that at all? How do Turks refer to their country?

For the sound you mean? I think Türkei (German) and Turkije (Dutch) also comes pretty close. (And there's no association with the turkey.);)

Türkei (German) is not that close because it is like turk- (plus) I (as in first singular person in English).

From your explanation I gathered Türkiye is pronounced like Türkei. So a combination of Türk- (German) with -ey (English) +e (as in English "uh") would be a phonetic approximation, no? (To me, being Dutch with a German mother, reading Türkiye is not a problem - although Türkei/Turkije are pronounced quite differently.)

That's war, baby, the Greeks wanted Asia minor, while the Turks also wanted to keep it.
No, that's ethnic cleansing. The two often come together, but they're not the same thing.

How many languages are spoken in Turkey and what part of the population speaks English or some other European language?

If Turks are so much unlike Arabs and more like Europeans, why dont the Turks Openly Condemn the Terrorist supporting nations like Iran or Syria and the like. Also-Do the Turks Recognize Israel and do the Turks recognize the Palestinian Liberation Organization and if so do they support it? Do the Turkish Government support Hamas?

Alongside the United States, Turkey is a close ally of Israel. Turkey was the first Muslim-majority nation to formally recognize the State of Israel, only one year after the Declaration of the Jewish State (March 28, 1949). Israel has been a major supplier of arms to Turkey. Military, strategic, and diplomatic cooperation between Turkey and Israel is accorded high priority by the governments of both countries, which share concerns with respect to the regional instabilities in the Middle East.

Opinions of Hamas are divided in Egypt and Kuwait, and Hamas is viewed negatively in Turkey and Lebanon

Turkey has condemned Syria for supporting the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization internationally by a number of states and organizations,

And, like European Nations, no one wants to antagonise Iran cause of the economy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran-Turkey_relations
Both countries are part of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Turkey receives many Iranian tourists each year and economically benefits from Iranian tourism.[1]
Bilateral trade between the nations is increasing. In 2005, the trade increased to $4 billion from $1 billion in 2000.

While Im not a Turk, Turkey is my second most favourite nation and I will not let its reputaion be clouded in ignorance.
I hope that clears any "Turkey is evil!!" thoughts...

Sorry then. Its just that on these forums, there are some people who seems to be only able to associate Turkey with nothing but those damned genocides in the 1920s.

It really irks me.

Honestly, when i think of Turkey, i think of Indiana Jones, and the scene where the Turkish president wants the car.

These things have nothing to do with being "non-Arab." There are terrorists in many non-Arab nations. And you don't think many of the Arab nations actually SUPPORT the PLO or Hamas, do you?
