Ask an Aussie

I do have one serious question.

How much do houses cost in Australia by average?

Are Monty Python generally hated in Australia because of that "Bruces" sketch, or do you just say "typical bloody poms" and get on with your lives?

Nope. Although more and more the Aussie public is being more easily offended.

Home and Away rates better, but both have faily strong audiences year in year out.

Sydney starting price is $500 000, Brisbane and Perth used to be cheaper but now are IIRC maybe $300 000???, Melbourne I think is somewhere in between Sydney and Brisbane/Perth's prices. The prices have risen a lot recently.

Question: Who dislikes Collingwood?

See Avatar.

Do you guys get snow? :snowcool:

We do actually have a snow season, and a few ski resorts, for a couple of months over winter... june, july etc.

Strangly, in the middle of one of our hottest, worst bushfire summers this year, we actually got snow in our alpine regions on Christmas day... right where the worst fires were raging.

Figure that one out...!

My question is still open and unanswered :(

In December 2007 / January 2008 I'll be (back) down under. 1 activity that is on the agenda is snorkling on the Great Barrier Reef. We are certainly close to Brisbane, possibly we'll visit Townsville or Cairns.

What is a good location to go to to be able to go Great-Barrier-Reefing ?

We also want to see the outback. Since we won't go that far inland and our way of transportation is most likely car; which parts of Queensland qualify as outback and are not too far from the coast as well ? (how far?)

Australia has the hottest women no joke! Why do you think that happens, or is that because of the weather (skimpy clothings makes people self conscious)

You don't see the ugly ones. ;)

I'd guess it would have a lot to do with the warm weather and common beachgoing, so you see more of the nice women.

What is the food like in Australia?

Whats your fave Aussie wine?

Mine is Nepenthe's Pinot Noir by the way.

Do you guys actually drink Jacobs Creek or Hardys much? Cuz those wines are all over the UK market.

I'm not a big wine drinker, and I'm definitely not enough of a wine drinker to have a particular favourite. But both Jacob's Creek & Hardys get advertised a bit, so I assume they're being drunk here too.

That sketch is funny. As is Terry Pratchett's 'Last Continent'. Most aussies seem to be able to cope with, and laugh at, self-deprecating humour. Although there seems to be a bit of a trend towards people having less of a sense of humour.

Depends what you want, and where it is. www.allhomes.com.au would be a good place to do your own research on it.

There's not really a bad location, I think more of a deciding factor is probably where you want to stay, whether it's pitching a tent somewhere, right up to one of the very expensive resort islands. Fraser Island is definitely worth a visit, apart from that, there are plenty of simple boat trips catering to toruists, especially if you make it to Cairns. They cover everything from full on diving trips, glass bottomed boats for sightseeing, snorkelling, etc. I would assume there would also be opportunities to scuba dive for those that don't have training/licensing, that don't involve the full course, especially in major spots like cairns.

If you're willing to drive from near Brisbane as far north as Townsville/Cairns, (Brisbane-Cairns is over 1600km) it's not that many extra hours drive to head inland for 'outback' stuff. I have no idea what qualifies as 'outback', but if you take inland routes from Brisbane to Cairns in one direction, and coastal in the other, you'll probably find something that qualifies. Charters Towers is a town that might, and it's only ~150km from Townsville.
