Sydney starting price is $500 000, Brisbane and Perth used to be cheaper but now are IIRC maybe $300 000???, Melbourne I think is somewhere in between Sydney and Brisbane/Perth's prices. The prices have risen a lot recently.

We do actually have a snow season, and a few ski resorts, for a couple of months over winter... june, july etc.
Strangly, in the middle of one of our hottest, worst bushfire summers this year, we actually got snow in our alpine regions on Christmas day... right where the worst fires were raging.
Figure that one out...!

Scuba diving requires a diploma and that would mean we'd have to be there for several days. We'll be on the GBR for 1 day, possible 2 at max so that's not feasable. There's a lot of Australia that we're going to visit.

I'm not a big wine drinker, and I'm definitely not enough of a wine drinker to have a particular favourite. But both Jacob's Creek & Hardys get advertised a bit, so I assume they're being drunk here too.

Fraser Island is definitely worth a visit, apart from that, there are plenty of simple boat trips catering to toruists, especially if you make it to Cairns. They cover everything from full on diving trips, glass bottomed boats for sightseeing, snorkelling, etc. I would assume there would also be opportunities to scuba dive for those that don't have training/licensing, that don't involve the full course, especially in major spots like cairns.
If you're willing to drive from near Brisbane as far north as Townsville/Cairns, (Brisbane-Cairns is over 1600km) it's not that many extra hours drive to head inland for 'outback' stuff. I have no idea what qualifies as 'outback', but if you take inland routes from Brisbane to Cairns in one direction, and coastal in the other, you'll probably find something that qualifies. Charters Towers is a town that might, and it's only ~150km from Townsville.
