Has anyone tried playing a game where there is NO religion in any of your cities? (by getting Theocracy using Shwedagon Paya and adopting it with No State Religion)

I'm currently playing one (as Japan)...it's pretty hard because I'm going for a culture victory....none of my cities are anywhere close to legendary.

In my other attempt at a culture victory as Japan, I had already won the game at this point :(

P.S. Might make an interesting RPC for someone to do, where the rules are that you may not have any religion in your cities and must raze all 7 holy cities :D

Theocracy w/ STR dosen't prevent spread of all religions. They changed that after vanilla b/c of stupid AIs.

You should change your plan and go for some other victory. Getting Culture, when your only multipliers are Broadcast towers and the 3 Hit Wonders - which come very late - is hard. Unless you are playing on settler the AI will launch before you hit 3 Legendary cities.

Your other option is to convert your three legendary cities to providing as much food as possible, change to Caste System, and run as many artists in those cities as you can. Besides the culture provided by the artist specialists, you should produce several Great Artists (one of those three cities should have the National Epic, right?) and each of them can be used for a Great Work in whichever city is furthest from Legendary status.

Refar, you missed one: the Hermitage is also available as a non-religious culture multiplier. ;)

You can win pretty easily via culture without the multipliers (except the hermitage like Sis says). All you need are artists and great artists. Civics are representation/free speech/caste/mercantilism/pacifism.

pacifism is useless without state religion tho

I still think you can do it if you're playing noble or below. They don't launch the ship on a standard noble game until almost 2000 usually. Even without 2x GP, you can do it. Hell, Philosophical makes it as if you had pacifism with a non Phili leader.

Shouldn't playing isolationist (no OB at all) prevent any religious spread? Or does 'natural' spread via Trade Route work when borders are closed?

Or if that's not enough for you - go for the Corporations. With a decent amount of resources, that can have you rolling in culture.

It does. It even works along trade routes that aren't your own. If you have never met civ B, but have trade routes with civ A that has trade routes with B, your religion can spread to B.

So it's a mere conidence that none of my six cities have gotten a religion, even though Shaka (who has religion in each of his cities and several missionaries running around my land) and the six other AIs all have open borders with me?

Also, the game isn't going good. I think I'm gonna try and keep ahead in technology so I can launch a spaceship if need be.

You must like a challenge.
