Ah, so if I use a german curse word and properly translate it into the english word manure ... then it's fine? You see, I would count this as nationalism / cultural ignorance despite it being less hard on me in this case.
I totally agree that cursing is no "american invention". And I also agree that cursing isn't a good habit. But believe it or not, cursing is handled completely different in different countries. While most curse words are fairly similar in all germanic languages (including the germanic-romanic-celtic bastard-language english) ... it's not true for all of them.
Do you consider it fair, that a non-native english speaker should be allowed to insult native english speakers, just because he is able to translate the words creatively?
On the other hand, do you consider it fair, that a non-native speaker is punished for using the english translation of a word that is commonly used in his native language?
I'm not objecting the use of a curse filter mind you. I'm objecting the unreflected use of a curse filter that limits speech in a certain culturaly dependent way AND only limits words that are considered derrogative in this specific culture.
This forum is about a game that asks "what if" ... and there are more then one Civ in this game. One of the nice touches of Civ V is the ... creative way certain leaders start to "insult" you once things get rough. Maybe looking into this, and thinking about how this reflects in the policy of this board would further the quality of this community.
