If you want transparent either use GIF or PNG. I dont like GIF, its only useful if theres a few colors.

In Paint.NET I load it up and then use the "Magic Wand" tool to select the white and then press Delete key. You sometimes have to mess with the tolerance (its on the top toolbar). You have to save it as PNG or GIF to make the transparent
