Bad things we read about CIV3(for Dan).

See...I knew we should have trusted those fine Firaxis folks ! worry, worry, worry...no need for it. My mind is peaceful and relaxed ....honest...or it will be as soon as I have exterminated those pesky Zulus / Mongols / Romans :-)

Thanks for the reply Dan, I am saving my pennies to buy Civ3 as we speak

Happy days.

I think by that he means that in CIV1 and 2 all the civs were effectively the same - it didn't make any real difference which one you played. Now it's going to feel more like you really are seeing the English throughout history, which I think will be better. Having said that, I appreciate other people's frustration at losing their civ - my native Civ is one of the last they'd take out, so I can be more sanguine about this issue. But I think, judging from the passions aroused on this forum, there could be some really good alternative civs being designed. I just hope there's a way of importing other people's creations into the game, as I would really like to see what some of you lot come up with.

Right on Supernaut, I would be importing about fifty civs into my game so that each game is truly unique and cool. SUs are an option hooray for that, now I come to think of it it will be quite cool to experiment with the SUs for a couple of games but I'm sure I will turn them off in the long run. Seeing as you are our own great library Dan, can you give us at civfantics the scoop on which will be the 16 civs involved. I would love to see the faces on the "other site" if we announced the news first.

Good!Good!Good!
I think CIVILIZATION 3 will be THE civilization!
From what i read everyday i see nothing wrong anymore and don't think a "CIVILIZATION 4" could be possible,or even any patch cause i read that Firaxis is debugging all.
Note:continue like that...no cheat possible from the player or the ais and don't put the
"CTP map setting"...it sucks and most online games aren't finished or don't begin cause of that.

Thanks Dan for the great info.

I believe I read the Civ proximity news in one of the reviews posted here, I will find it and edit...

As for the insane advantages I can only give this kind of example. Be forewarned that I am basing this off of my Civ 2 experiences, but I am fully aware that this (Civ 3) is a much different game than Civ 2.

Imagine me and my neighbor (The evil Zulus) discover Bronze working at the same time. Imagine Bronze working triggers the option of building phalanxes for me, and impi warriors for them. Phalanxes (Attack 1, Defense 2) are my best defensive option, so I will build them in all my cities as quickly as possible. Meanwhile let's say the Impi (Attack 4 defense 2) can be produced cheaper (hey it is a special unit). Soon, I will be dealing with an angry horde of unstoppable (In 3500 b.c they will be tough to kill) Impi warriors. With city walls I should be able to stop them, but I will have to immediately go to that strat when I see Zulus in the early years because I may not be able to compete with them and their special unit. Plus, I can just see the AI already pumping out 175 Impi warriors and sending them to run roughshod over my terrain

.

I love the idea that I can turn it off, and the special units for putting together custom Civs is just brilliant!!! I mean it is really brilliant. I had thought out quite a bit about good things and bad things with the Custom units and had never seen any real good reasons for them. *Applause*

But I will be leery of anyone making their own civ with custom unit in tow. I mean, a swiss pikemen should have pretty good defence in my opinion, but I can already see the Swiss pikemen of doom that some joker will create (Attack 7, Defence 23 available with irrigation). Or the Swedish Bikini Team (Attack 89, Defence 32 Available with beer brewing). My only hope is that these kind of things will not be allowed (Somehow????) in Online play.

Thanks again for the info Dan.

And I would probably sell a relative into slavery in order to get a copy of Civ3 right now

.

Here is where I should put "just kidding" right???

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at THAT man.

Don't worry...i've read somewhere that the specific units will have +2 pts.
Anyway,i'll turn that option off.
I already imagine everyone making his own civ with special tanks or airplanes regardless of history.
I think most players will turn that off online.

i think there should be some kind of rules for this or maybe you only would be able to edit the existing special units. however, it´s a must that you should be able to use your own civ with your own leader portrait and special units online. that would make civ3 so incredible funking åmål great!

So, with the custom civs, is there somehow a way to make your own leader portraits and stuff like taht as well?

Thanks Dan for your responses to our questions.

Can you tell us if Firaxis is working on a deal for where multiplayer games will be played? And also if there will be a rating system built in?

If you don't know anything about this then that's ok too, just say so.

Thanks for all your help Dan. You are a saint. Your information puts us all at ease.

Hey, won't it be cool if you can scan in pictures to be your leaders? You could play your own Civ in multiplayer with you as the leader. Or you could play a one-player game against Misses January-June. That would give you an incentive to ensure your rating was 'Worshipful'. No, hang on, we're discussing that in another thread aren't we

can someone please speed up time until Civ3 is released? I'm going through withdrawls...

well i think it would be good if somehow u mad it so u could send in your own made civs and then the servers would install them so that civ could be used online that is the only way i can think ov doing it without pll doing stupid things like Attack 39 and Defence 78 or what ever like that

I'm a bit afraid when i see a Firaxis crew member(on apolyton) saying that you'll be able to do whatever you want with the game(the txt.,units,etc)...I don't wanna see people making their little counts and play mathematically as a few players did it with CTP
cwm8.gif

This enhances the risk of cheating.
Personnally i won't change anything from what the Firaxis team released except for custom civs and scenarios.
SO OK FOR THOSE 2 STUFFS BUT AVOID THE CHEATS!
As it was done in CTP,make it impossible to play online if someone tricked stuffs unless he made a patch.
People would have to share the added units etc.

Everybody wants to see THEIR nationality represented as a civilization, and if everybody had their way there would be way too many civs to make them all really detailed.

I still don't think the way they are doing it is fair, though. I am Polish and I am perfectly willing to see my people lumped together with the Russians even though the Russians are our historical adversaries. If you're only going to have one Slavic race though, then why split the Americans from the Enlgish if they're both Anglo-Saxon? There is a big difference between RACE DISTINCTIONS and POLITICAL DISTINCTIONS, and I think the number of civilizations to choose from should be based on RACE while POLITICAL bodies like the United States could develop during the course of the game. It doesn't make sense for there to be a US Civilization in 4000 BC with Washington D.C. when really they're not a separate civilization but just a separate political body with the same cultural roots as the English.

a civilization isn't a race...it's a tribe.
Polishes rnt from Moscow.
Poland exists since the middle-age already.
What i call a politic division is India and Bangladesh for example.
I see what u mean but if we start with that way...there will be so few civs and they won't represent anything for people.
There's no mongoloïd civilization.

"As I've stated numerous times before, we consciously chose quality over quantity. I'd personally rather have 16 very high-quality and distinctive civs than 48 cookie-cutter civs, anyway."

Good. Please keep it that way.

And while you're at it, Dan, please take out the Americans and put in some other civ. Yes, I love my home country (the U.S. of A), but all this nationalistic pride and whining is getting out of hand. Doing this will, hopefully, pacify some "culture" out there while not offending too many Americans (since we've already been in the first two).

Quite frankly, I rarely play the Americans anyway. Maybe it's our "lack of culture" ;-) that has brought me to see all this hoopla as insignificant. I rather create my own civ culture in the game instead of relying upon history. The Aztecs have been my favorite for this with all their funky city names.

What?! You mean I can't choose to be the barbarians? Are you insane??!! ;-)

No!!!! Don't do lumping!!! Keep the Civs you have planned and go with 'em!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a game about civilization, not about races. I can see it now. "Capoids and Caucasoids sign a secret alliance to contain Mongoloid aggression." Give me a break.

And if I hear one more person say that the Americans don't belong in the game because there weren't Americans in 4000 BC and we're "just" an offshoot of the English, I'm going to go postal and start shooting people randomly. Point one, none of the civs in the game were around as such in 4000 BC. Even the Egyptians didn't have cities by then. That's not the bloody point. If you want 100% historical accuracy, put the game away and watch a documentary instead. Point two, whether anyone here likes it or not, the United States of America is a separate nation from England and has been since the late 18th century. It's now the sixth month of the 21st century, so we've been around more than long enough to qualify as our own civilization. Get used to it. If we're going to get absolutely picky about who is an offshoot of whom, then the English shouldn't be there either, because they're "just" an offshoot of the Germans and the Romans. Same with the French. The Carthaginians are just an offshoot of the Phoenicians, who were never in the game to begin with, and the Russians are just an offshoot of the Vikings, who in turn were also an offshoot of the Germans. Does everyone understand now? It's a game, people. It may well be the greatest game ever made, but it's still just a game. Take the sticks out of your butts and just enjoy the damn thing.

I totally agree with u...actually mankind comes from Ethiopia.
The most probable theory says that the east-african rift provoqued mountains and the climate became arid whereas there were aboundant forests before.
So the monkeys were obliged to step to find food and they got new muscles at the level of pelvis that enabled em to step.
