Beneath the Jade Moon (pre-NES)

NK wants a question.

What the hell is going on in this world? Explain to me what the supernatural/fantastical/magical elements are as they exist during the play time of this NES. What can I do? What can't I do? What are the limitations on this magic? Does it exist? Why does the Imperial line have those genetic traits? Etc.

Only a few can "control" it. Most of them are lying. Used to be more common before.

Most exists "naturally".

Trying to put extremely clear labels on what is and should be obscure and incomprehensible even to its practitioners seems like it will be fruitless.

The world is *more* magical than our own, but *less* magical than a DnD campaign session where magical forces can be harnessed by virtually anyone and regularly used in a systematic way. If you want to think of it like that.

Magic is something which survives in the dark corners of the world, corners which most of us, as major lords inhabiting an ordered hierarchical society and using prayer as the nexus of our spirituality rather than magic ritual, cannot inhabit. So I'm tempted to expand on what erez said: While magical things might happen and have an effect on the players, as players we can't make use of magical forces on a consistent basis.

The issue is still there that the difference between "more than Earth" and "less than DnD" is massive.

If 1 is earth, and 10 is dnd, its a between 1.5 and 2.5

The imperative being that the supernatural acts on nature, not directly on humanity, humanity does not act on the supernatural.

From reading these comments, it seems everyone else understands my words perfectly, Lucky.

Well said. Emphasis on "consistent basis" -- thus not negating players making use of the fantastic, but also acknowledging that it will be extremely uncommon.

I have a question.

By the statement of perception vs reality. Do you mean that not only Jade Moon "magic" can be explained by Jade Moon "science" but more often handwaved as "magic", but also that Jade Moon "Magic" some could not be explained even by Real Life "science" and thus make it fantastical/unexpected for us Real Life folks as well?

Absolutely correct. You mentioned earlier that everything can be explained OOC, but I explicitly said that not everything will be explained OOC, and not everything needs to be. Somewhere above, Thlayli had an adequate articulation of the futility of attempting to categorize and explain this topic. The statement of perception vs. reality was more in response to Devercia's query on mythologies, and how the Aulesiri might reconcile their faith with scientific discovery. It was that long-winded response that caused any kind of confusion. ;)

Devercia: A lot of what you have posted on the "Aulesiri pantheon" -- you spell Aulesiri wrong frequently -- is not canon. Please run it by me before putting it to the wiki.

intended to, I wanted to get it down in my head (IE the wiki) before I proposed it. If you want it canon only, then I'll do that.

You can get it out into the thread instead so we can discuss it, instead of the Wiki.

Anyway, what kind of "standard organization" would you like Starlife? Or do you trust us to self-organize however we want? Also, I am putting "Holdings" and "Retainers" together.

Should we make separate pages for each of our major holdings?

By the way, I deleted your content, but this was not intentional (as hard as that is to believe :p). I am really god-awful at using this wiki right now (first time) -- but I think I saved your pages somehow on the wiki itself?

But yeah, what terrance said: we should try to get discussion out here first before making it canon. :)
