Beta Test Openings for Civ3 Conquests

I don't think that matters, if you are American or not. I think they will choose the people with the best computers and who have most of the things filled out.
I imagine they'll choose testers with a wide variety of computers - fast, slow, old, new - same with operating systems, video cards, etc. Likewise a sampling of age ranges and other demographic factors.

Yeah, mine (Pentium 3, 667mhz, 56k) would probably qualify as a low end system. ;)

Nice thing I got a laptop, that should be one of the minorities :p

And I'm swede too, another minority... ;)

I agree. That way they can figure out how the game handles on different computers, from the slowest to the fastest.

According to the Civ3.com Conquests FAQ, here are the minimum system requirements
: http://www.civ3.com/conq_faq.cfm

What are the system requirements for the game?
Windows® version (95/98/Me/2000/XP)
Pentium II, 300Mhz
32 MB RAM
400 MB free HD space
4X CD-ROM
DirectX 8.0a or better
Video card: capable of 1024 x 768 x 16-bit color
Sound card: DirectX 8.0a compatible

I apllied a couple hours ago...
Hope I'll get in. ><
My comp's pretty good, except for the 3D accelerator which is mid-low [GeForce2MX]...
I better be in a slice of the world population they want to betatest...
*Gets down on his knees and doesn't pray cause he's an athiest.*

Geforce2MX isnt that bad of a card thats what most computers have now

BTW: I signed up too. I filled out every box very accuratly hopefully that will give me a good chance of getting in.

Most Beta Tests choose a wide range of systems, not just the best ones.

I didn't put in the motherboard, but I did for everything else.

Will that affect their decision???

I'd like to meet the man who is 90+ and still plays videogames

Whew! Never underestimate how quickly a motivated fan base can move... :p

The beta program will also be advertised on the Spring Civ newsletter* which is going out later this week. I don't envy the people charged with looking through the applications to pick candidates. (No use PM'ing me; I'm not involved in that process.) And for those who are asking: yes, you will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Good luck to all!

Best regards,

* Whaddya mean you're not signed up for the newsletter? You can subscribe to it at civ3.com.

So what's the maximum amount of people that are picked???

Got this from Firaxis today:

Firaxis will be accepting several hundred players as part of our Civ Conquest closed beta program in June. Interested players must register between now and May 27th to be considered for the team. Participants who qualify must agree to the terms of the beta test program, including a non-disclosure agreement.

PTW only had a few dozen beta testers, and now Conquest will have several hundred!!! This is really unprecedented in the history of Civilization! :goodjob:

And here is a little Q&A about Firaxis's role in the development of the new expansion:

CivFanatics: Today BreakAway Games announced they are accepting beta test applications for the Civ3: Conquest expansion. Does this mean BreakAway Games is doing the expansion, not Firaxis?

Firaxis: We're working with Breakaway to develop Civ III:Conquests. We've worked with them successfully in the past on other games and some of the folks at Breakaway are former Micropose members who have worked on many of Sid's classic games, including Civilization. Partnering with them in the development of this expansion allows us to ramp up the development team so that we have sufficient manpower to make a top notch expansion for Civ III.

Man Thunderfall stop advertising you lower my chances

But really TF if it weren't for the first message I wouldn't have signed up.

Hey Chieftess, when you sign the NDA you are still allowed to say you ARE a beta tester right?

Might the large amount of testers possibly be due to multiplayer testing? Wasn't there a question about that on the signup form?

Play the World had multiplayer and there were only a few dozen of us and the core of people I saw committed to it was closer to 20 (myself included) and for the few Euros like myself playing with the rest meant LATE, LATE, nights and still does for testing new patchs.

I think a closed beta-test of several hundred is a far better approach:

1. Drop-outs from testing and inactive testers matters less
2. More games played
3. Easier to get people together for a multiplayer game
4. More ideas
5. More eyes looking out for those bugs

I agree completely with Thunderfall that this news is an extremely promising development for producing a good product.

6. Not so much whining about lag ;)

Three cheers for huge beta tests - I'm really looking forward to see what's in store for us with this expansion. Who can I bribe to get more info?

I just signed up too. I hope I get picked so I'll be among the first people to play Conquests. Then I can pick up women using the title of Civ3 Beta Tester. :D

Firaxis/Atari is doing a much better job so far with this expansion making sure that it is best damn civ game they can make. It looks promising so far. :goodjob:

@Isak - Psssst . . . Meet me down by the dock at midnight, make sure you bring the suitcase of money. ;)
