[Beyond the Sword] History In The Making

DrewBledsoe: Sounds pretty cool. Do the ai's always go to their favorite economic civic, or do they weigh them up and pick the best one?

Jay, they will weigh up the situation, with an emphasis on their fav civic, as long as that civic makes sense, For instance, a civ that has free market as a fav civ will not adopt it if it has no open borders with others (This is a very basic example, Im not sure exactly how it decides, but somewhat along the lines stated)
I'm playing 1.04 and i have somethings to say:

- I liked Temple building :goodjob:

- Science and culture 5% per chance :goodjob:

- I liked 2 unic building :goodjob:

- Siege units missing shots, it's very cool :goodjob:

But i think CANON is overpowered. I don't liked them. It's to strong. With you build 10, you won. I think there is a problem. Or the canon it's too early or need o unit to kill this. Canon it's to close to armsman, maceman, pikeman and knight, and all this units have strong dificulty to kill a canon. It's so hard, i try kill with knights with 2 promotions, but i lost more knights than kill enemy canon. The funniest part is a bombard enemy canon and my knights still losing.

I think need some balance, like some knights promotions +25% Knighs Vs Canon, or put canon more late.

- A sugestion is Inquisitor unit, to ban religions from you cities.

On cannons, yes I have to agree. A 12 str unit at gunpowder still seems just too strong. It actually comes before musketmen who are only 9 str, and will often be the best defender/attacker in the field against anything else. I think the only answer is some kind of "bombard" unit at gunpowder maybe str 8 or 9, and then actual "cannons" available only with say rifling.

Grave: The strategy text for the Supreme Court seems to be missing still, unless I messed up the files :-)

Thanks... I'll fix this for the next patch! :goodjob:

1) on oddesey speed I often get to a point where I can only build units in the long run, can you include something like a "idle" option like there's in other mods, or include more early buildings like a herbalist or a well, or even better some building that gives early happyness since that's hard to come by

Still?

I usually don't play on Odyssey speed (takes too long to playtest). What else should I do to balance this out?

2)I very much like the graphic modcomp formations of the navy seal I think it would make a nice addition. ofcourse it's you mod so feel no obligation it's just an idea.
keep up the very good work!

It's in the que... just haven't looked at it in depth yet.

"God"Damm It i need help asswipes!!!!

:dunno:

Hi Grave and all!

I modified the Civics like I said and even a bit more.

You find a sheet as jpg and the xml-file as zip attached.

Changes are:
Slavery: Workers +25% (was 50), slavery seemed to powerful to me
Caste System: -25% GP birth Rate (was -50)
Serfdom: only 1 unhealth per city (was 3); serfdom at all doesn´t look attractive to me
Mercantilism: only 1 gold (was 2) per mine (they are common, so this seemed to much for me)
Free market: civ´s that don´t possess get unhappy, if someone other has free market (we ALL want to buy EVERYTHING); in addition, it gives 2 unhealth, but no production malus.
Environmentalism: reduces production by 10%, but corporations have no negative effect on city maintenance; Having Env does now NOT make the others unhappy
Organized religion: only 25% (was 33%) bonus on buildings construction in cities with state religion. But -20% MILITARY units production in ALL cities.
Pacifism: in addition also has -10% military unit production (in addition to the +100% War Weariness) - thougth, that building up an army should be more expensive under a pacifist government.

Tell me, what you all think of it.

Zoid

Some interesting ideas. Don't go too hog wild changing things... I did a pretty good overhaul for v1.05. ;)

But I will say, they're kinda on par with what you did.

DrewBledsoe: Sounds pretty cool. Do the ai's always go to their favorite economic civic, or do they weigh them up and pick the best one?

Depends. They still weigh out the pros/cons and then decide. But, being their "favorite" civic, that particular civic will pull more weight in decision making process. Also, the Flavor of the civic also influences their decision.

I just moved the unhappyness in the economic section from env to freem, because other people rather envy you for having loads of goods (due to free market) than for better environment.
I think more Indian people would like to have central European wealth and goods than alpine fresh water, clean air and green forests.

But that is just an idea of me...

Now THAT is a good idea! I think we found ourselves a weenar! :goodjob:

OK, I'll look into what I ca do with this unit.

I'm not a big fan of the Python version of the Inquisitior unit. Python tends to slow the game down when alot is going on... I try to keep the Python mods to a minimum.

Now if I can get the old SDK version to work with BtS.... :mischief:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/56571/Israel.CivBeyondSwordSave

My game with Israel that I saved last night will not load. Right before it should start displaying visuals I get a CTD. I've uploaded the save but I'm not sure how to post it.

I need more specifics.

Was this an old save game prior to v1.04?
Were you using the modules?
What was the last thing you were doing in the savegame before you saved it?
What game options/settings did you have?

Looking at the XML event log... you are missing a TON of stuff. It looks like the game is looking for specific XML files and not finding them. You sure you installed everything correctly? Or did you move/modify any files?

I was playing with the 1.04, using the modules, I was on the terra 2 large size map with 12 civs. I don't remember doing anything really significant when I saved it. just building stuff. i was at the end of my turn when I saved. I also tried to load the auto-saves and they CTD too. Only the initial save (beginning of game) would load. I was playin on Oddysey speed. I believe I installed everything good because I've never had a CTD before. I don't know how to modify files.

Wel you could provide an option in the build queue "idle" gives 20% :commerce: and 20% :sience: of the :hammers: you produce this is used in a lot of mod for example world piece by seven05

You can already do that. :)

Not only with Production and Gold, but with Science, Culture and Espionage. Vanilla game is the same way (except I added Espionage). :)

@ darkedone02 You want the nextwar unit's and building included(and techs of course)?I've thought about doing it for myself but since I've got exams I postphoned it!
@grave is it normal that I can build a labratory when I discover scientific method? or is this a bug?

Banking and Scientific Method.

so......what do you recommend for my ctd problem? should i delete everything and re-install? I don't mind if that's what it takes. Having HITM withdrawals already....

Now THAT is a good idea! I think we found ourselves a weenar! :goodjob:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=weenar says:
n : the male organ of copulation (`member' is a euphemism)

Do I get something wrong or did I just open the wrong dictionary?

Funny thing: I play the russians (Stalin) and and in the middle of the game, I chenged the civics like above, reloaded the game and the civic are displayed correctly. But: now I now have a nationwide +10% production bonus on military units (which e.g. cancelles out the nbeg. effect of Pacifism and reduces the negative effect of org. religion). Don´t know why!!!

And: If a civic gives unhealth, where is this displayed? i cant find my 2 unhealth for free market in the city screen. Or is this cancelled out due to the herbalist event that occured at the very beginnin of the game and gave me 2 health??

Is it intentionally that SE isnt really an option in this mod?

Specialist Economy, Specialists and farms instead of Cottage Economy aka CE.

The only real diff is that representation doesn't give the extra science per specialist, hence no pyramids, then run representation. If you want early specialist with this mod, build the Sphinx, it allows unlimited Scientists (Under Free Religion). Combine that with Caste System (unlimited Eng, Merchants etc.) and I think the SE is pretty alive and kicking, in fact in many ways, kicking harder than in Vanilla BTS..;)

Specialist Economy. It's part of the never ending debate from the strategy forum. It's basically where you turn your science slider way down or off and rely on caste system's unlimited scientist for your science. Requires spamming farms everywhere to support the scientist and works best with representation/caste system civics. You also use all your great people to light bulb techs to get a big tech lead and then build your more advanced army (usually cavalry) and destroy your enemy.

So no, this mod may not be suited for that strategy, but i would contend that this mod is more suited for fun and deeper thinking.

I like how luck plays a little part in the beginning. like trying to choose which techs to go for and hoping that you have the corresponding resource in your city radius. That's a blast. When everything is already revealed it causes you to know exactly what tech path to take. blah. blah. boring.

Hey grave: I tried another game with a different map, bigandsmall vs. terra2 and i played it to about 275bc in normal speed vs. oddysey on a standard size instead of large, and I saved it, reloaded it without getting a ctd. I can upload the game save if you want to compare it to my other one.

I'm not entirely sure why that savegame you uploaded was crashing. I even started a new game and played as Israel until 1000BC, then went through and tested each autosave... no issues at all. How wierd.

I actually utilize Specialists more in HiTM than vanilla. They're just spread out across the Civics more. Plus alot of the 2UB focus alot on free specialists.

I like specialists. :)
