Back in high school there were times when I'd get on schedules of sleeping something like 2-7 AM, then going to school, and then sleeping again from something like 4-7 PM. It actually worked out fairly well in terms of being adequately energetic, although it was only during the week - back to monophasic sleep on the weekends, since I didn't have to get up at 7 AM then.
If the alternative is only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night, I'd say it's almost certainly going to be better than that.
And I second GhostWriter16's question... what's so fantastic about waking up from 3-4 AM? I have nothing against being up at that hour, there's just rarely something that I would wake up for then.
