BirdNES 3: Discussions & Questions

Sunday night, that will be a good way to close the weekend.

Good luck Bird, and I know this first update will be great!

Update on Sunday night would be a great way to start the week ;)

The week starts Monday. But yes Sunday night would be great.

In any case, left to do:

Aztecs, Incas
Map changes
Specialty maps
Stat checking
Final read through and organizing the posts.

I'm guessing mid afternoon to early evening depending on whether or not I have to go to Costco.

My calender does not lie. The week starts on monday.

Will we be able to see the Americas part of the update or is that also hidden from us?

I'm still thinking about that. I might post some of their update, but certainly no maps.

Oops, I quoted the wrong post.

Hypothesis: Qoou is a liar with regards to peace, and Austria dies this update.

Re: Milan - Genoa. To my understanding it's sort of like the relationship between Muscovy and Pskov. Sure, there is a governor, and he has powers, but in reality the Veche/Gran Consiglio still is more powerful and still could just throw him out if it wants to. Ofcourse, that will cause serious international complications, but you could do that.

Yes... do it... I dare you.

That sounds most fortuitous, I think I just about ran out of Muscovite trivia for now. :p

Lots of people in the main civilised regions of Eurasia know about each other, to some extent or another. European nations generally have diplomatic contacts with each other; I have limited contacts with my neighbours and the nations along my primary trade routes; Mediterranean nations generally have contact with Iran and everything up to that, but not beyond. The nations elsewhere generally only have contacts with their more or less immediate neighbours and their immediate trading partners. China probably can send an embassy to India without too much trouble, but I'm not so sure about vice versa. Mainland Southeast Asia and East Asia in general as well as eastern parts of Central Asia do generally have contact with China, bu not necessarily with each other. Not sure about how far the contacts between Muslim states were developed at the time, but I think my rule mostly applies to them; I am not aware of any envoys from Delhi arriving at the Ottoman court. Egypt-Gujarat contacts are due to trade, though, and that's a potential window for Egyptian diplomacy into India, useless though that would be. African nations don't seem to have much in the way of contacts beyond their standing overland and eastern maritime trade routes.

So generally speaking, all contact between those west of the Hindu Kush and those east would take place by sea? What was the state of the Silk Road this point with the fall of the Mongols and successor Timurid states?

No. Iran has diplomatic contact with at least the northern half of India. There just isn't much contact at all between distant nations outside of basic cultural-geographic regions (Europe, Middle East, India, Central Asia, East Asia, South-East Asia); there certainly is no direct contact between India and Europe at all, if that's what you are talking about.

It practically doesn't exist anymore, due to the constant political chaos and warfare and in part also the reconfigurations on the western periphery of Asia. Which would be one of the main reasons for the voyages of exploration.

.

So generally speaking, Persia and the Ottomans were still serving as the Middle Man between Europe and India (and driving up taxes on trade, thus initiating exploration)?

The Ottoman Empire and Egypt, yes. Persia is in a state of utter chaos right now, so the trade routes that go through it are not in the best shape anyway.
