BirdNES 3: When Worlds Collide

Therefore, we entreat the lords here addressed to consider the following compromise: that England be confined to the island upon which it has made landfall and to which it now owes the duty of Christian ministry for a period of one hundred years, pledging to make no further attempts at colonization outside of this sphere, and joyfully submitting itself, in communion with the same act of submission made by Spain and Portugal in the original proclamation, to a spirit of cooperation and unity in the mighty work of evangelism in the New World. Furthermore, that the English maintain no more than a defensive navy in the New World, and that fleet to be no more than half the size of the Spanish and Portuguese New World fleets, as a demonstration of peaceful intentions.

Kings of Spain, Scotland, Portugal, and the Most Holy See,

In a spirit of compromise suggested by the Pope, England had considered your proposal and would like to present the following counter-offer.

1) The English will limit themselves to the lattitudes between the equator and the 30th North. This would mean that the isles of the Carib and Taíno people would fall under the jurisdiction of English protection while the mainlands north and south of the latitudes suggested would remain outside the influence of English settlement. These limitations would be effected for all lands currently known and mapped (what is in update 6).

2) Since there is no will to war with a happy compromise between sovereign European nations, we see no reason to limit the size of the English navy in the New World or anywhere, for while God created the lands of the earth divided amongst nations and tribes so that we might each have a land to rule, he did create the seas for all men to rule in commonality; and to limit one nation's access is to take the bread from their mouth.

We are eager to hear the counter-offer of the Spanish, Portuguese and Scots so that a happy compromise can be reached by all.

You're Henry the 8th dude. Stop listening to the Pope and do some schismatic stuff.

The English must make every attempt at compromise and cooperation; in the interest of peace between Christians throughout Europe and the World.

From: Demetrius, Caesar of Russia
To: The Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order

Word has reached Us that you and your Brothers[1] and their Subjects have deemed the Latin Caesar no longer capable of adequately protecting your lands and freedom, and have decided to look for more puissant and proximate protectors. Though you are Germans and Latins, while We Ourselves and Our subjects are Russians of Greek faith, know that your coreligionists and compatriots have often found protection under Our reign as well in previous years.

We have held council with Our Notables[2], and decided that We might extend this protection to you and yours as well. However, inasmuch as your Brothers have often been the enemies of Our ancestors, and also to disprove all rumours about your dishonest dealings in these matters that are being spread by our mutual enemies, We must request a number of conditions:

The Brothers will pledge to send at least half their army to Our campaigns at Our first request.

Russian garrisons will be established in Riga, Derpt and Revel, to protect the cities from bearers of ill-intent extraneous or internal, with the help of the Brothers themselves, and the Russian fleet will be free to use the Brothers' ports as it does Russian ones.

Likewise, the Russian traders will be allowed to trade in Livonia and Estland without any of the tariffs set up for outsiders.

The Brothers will send two of their high-ranking Magistrates and a close male relative of the current Grandmaster to Moscow as hostages of good will.

Lastly, the Brothers will - of course - desist from their efforts to recruit the protection of Our brother the King of Denmark, lest they cause strife between us. They should also abandon their attempts to build a coalition against Our brother the King of Poland, though they can be safe in knowing that they shall be protected from any claims the King of Poland may raise against them, if, of course, they would accept this proposal.

In exchange, We will not, as the less charitable of Our Notables suggest, in any way oppress or restrain the Latin faith in the Brothers' lands, or interfere in the internal affairs of the Brothers themselves or limit their amount in any way. And furthermore We will also allow the subjects of the Brothers to trade freely in Russian lands, and not demand the payment of a regular tribute in peacetime.

What say you and your Brothers?

Dmitriy's diplomacy with European countries was conducted in Latin, through the agency of an expanded staff of genuinely educated diplomats. This affected the terminology used.

OOC: Spry, for reasons I believe Strat has already voiced, I'm a little confused why you want to hold another one. The one held in Rome was a pretty big production, and pretty close to Venice. And sorry I missed this, though you meant a PM'd diplo.

Nothing happened. I want a less pompous and expensive and more local and eventful one. I also need a Synod just for administrative purposes because Venice hasn't had one in a while, so it is entirely IC for me to want to see what comes up at one, what Church grievances and issues specific to Venice might exist etc. . This isn't a grand ecclesiastical council like the one in Rome and its purposes were set out in the initial diplo I wrote. I want to look at these issues with Venice in mind more than anything else.

The offer is, and always will be, get off my land before I burn England to the ground.

Thanks for the orders I've received so far, keep them coming! I will not be around much today or tonight. Family in town.

I'll try to make up my mind and write some orders tomorro.

Christian II, King of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Wends and the Goths, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn and Dithmarschen, Count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, supports the offer made by his brother Demetrius of Russia.

OOC: LittleBoots: WOW. Just WOW. My eyes got crossed while reading your statement.

To: Everyone involved in the matter of the New World colonization
From: King João II of Portugal

We have studied both the Pope's and King Henry's proposition, and we feel that the best thing would be the following:

  • The continent of Diascia will be owned by Portugal, as well as the island that currently remains partially unexplored to the northwest of Diascia and the small islands between them.
  • The English people will own the islands of the Carib and Taino between Diascia and Columbia.
  • New Spain will own everthing to the west of their current colony of New Spain, as well as part of the northern half of Columbia once it is discovered.
  • Scotland will own most of the northern half of Columbia, included the two islands off Columbia's eastern coast.
Being that the matter of Columbia's ownership is very difficult due to the lack of knowledge regarding everything more than a few kilometres away from its eastern coast, it should be something to be determined then, but it's something that should be discussed between Scotland and Spain. In exchange, both Portugal and England would remain completely away from Columbia in regards to colonization.

Yours faithfully,
King João II

Venice formally protests the notion that it should be excluded from any settlement on the New World that allows for anyone except Spain and Portugal. We demand that islands between Columbia and Diascia be open not only to England but to all powers if any such settlement is reached.

Venice can easily be burned to the ground for it's blasphemy.

TO: All Christian Kings
FROM: Juan I, King of Spain and Navarre, Prince of Algiers

I shall not repeat myself on this issue, Spain is a mighty hammer of the Lord our God and shall use this to drive back those who wish to oppose her. My lands, rightfully given by our heavenly Father, are not open for discussion by anyone but said Father and if Venice or England, Scotland or others wish to ignore my words may God have mercy on their souls. It's a long way to the New World my brothers, and Spain knows but all the right ways to get there, and all the ways to defend it against the onslaught of greed.

So can Barcelona. But given you're not the one making a treaty anyway...

But we don't want to... especially as we haven't got any reason to... especially as you aren't letting England get to stay anyway. Besides, even the most pathetic heathens can plunder your cities.

If Spain wishes to be known as the most verbose empire ever to have graced the earth, it's going the right way about it.

However, you have nothing to be verbose about and we have nothing to be destroyed for, not that you could destroy us if you wanted to. So behave like a sensible king and stop gratuitously annoying a state which is rapidly losing its positive disposition towards you.

Spain will leave Venice to believe it's fairy tales of invulnerability, while we remind you that Venice is the traitor of an ally who allowed a Muslim fleet to attack Christian shores. Good day to you Doge.
