BNH02- Thats one small step....

I'm feeling better, but...

This is my notes for the in-between turn of 760 AD:

IBT: Game over? Russia sneak attack us and take Denver. Denver was defended by only 1 reg spear. It actually beats the first Corssack, but the 2nd one did it in.
The only other Russian troop that we see on the mainland is a regular Musket. There is a Russian archer and a long bow threatening Munich.
We also lose 2 lux's.

If didn't occur to me to take a screen shot of the war declaration, so that's the best description we've got.

Now, since this is a do or die moment, I'm going to stop here and ask you guy for advice. What should we do?

- Should we sign China to an alliance? Ruining our rep. (We will make peace with Russia before 20 turns) My gut instinct is actually no, since I believe in order to have any shoot at wining this game, we'll need our rep in tact.
- We are going to buy Military Tradition from India or Japan, and we are going to buy Saltpeter from France, that's for sure.
- Nationalism is out of the question, all of our economy doesn't even get a maybe.
- We can also sign France to a MPP, worth it? What are the rules regarding MPP? Are we going to break it if we sign peace with Russia?

Edit: What makes it even more interesting, is that I vetoed the knight build in Denver on the inherited turn, because Denver does not have a barrack. The knight would have been completed and fortified in Denver that turn.

JB, did you know something that we don't? :joke:

Here is the current situation:
BNH02-770AD.jpg

And our current military, just to scare you a bit ;) , they all fit onto one screen too, the other units are workers and galleys:
BNH02-770AD-military.jpg

And the 770 AD save, shadow the next 7 turns if you like. It's going to be very interesting.

Why would signing an MA with China Vs someone we are at war with ruin our rep ? We are at war with Russia, so we have no deals with them breaking.

If you mean breaking the MA deal with China; I don't see it happening. Either the war is going well and we capture (parts of) Russia; then I don't see a need to stop the war. Or Russia will win and having a spotless rep won't matter any more; we are dead anyway.

So; I'd say: Sign an MA with China (and others if possible) against Russia and don't cancel it later on.

I didn't like our under-whelming force so I set about building units to try and disuade the demands for tribute. I didn’t expect a sneak from Cathy since we had a deal going with her. I guess the upside is that she’s now trashed her reputation.

BTW, do we take the same hit since the gpt deal was broken? If our rep's already trashed then we need to rethink our strategy. If our rep's intact then I think we need to keep it that way.

Sign up allies before she does.

This war is most likely not going to go well.

If we were facing a civ that has been at war for a while, who has had their excess units drained, and is in trickle mode sending units to us, then it would be a different matter. But is a a demi-god AI that has been at peace for the entire middle ages. There will be hordes of units arriving at our door steps in a few turns.

If we stay at war for 20 turns, it will be death for us... unless, the Chinese can actually do something against the Russian. But hey, I'm confident that even we can beat the Chinese.

If we come out of this war not losing any core cities. Then I'd say that we have come out ahead. We can deal with them at a later time, at a time and place of our choosing. I don't mind losing the two former German cities, and maybe even L.A., but I draw the line at Boston. If we keep the cities east of Boston, then we still have a shot.

Okay, I'm leaning towards trying to survive now, and worry about rep later. We could always use spys.

Yeah, we were running really thin on forces for a long time. And you would think supplying iron to a civ for a few millennium would get you on their good side :crazyeye:

It would cost some gpt's to sign allies. Only China can be of any military help. However, India is supplies 2 lux's, and France is going to supply saltpeter, so we don't want them to turn on us either.

I'm going to finish the turns later tonight.

Turn 0 750 AD

The current diplomatic picture:
- China, who is on our continent, is behind us by a few techs. We are getting Iron and a lux from them for another 10 turns.
- Russia, who is also on our continent, is one of the big dogs. She is ahead of us by Nationalism and the techs beyond that. There is a 15 turn Iron and Lux for 2 lux deal in place.
- Japan, one of the weaker powers on the other continent, is behind us by Steam Power.
- India is similar in position to Japan, also behind by Steam Power. There is a 4-turn lux swap deal in place.
- France is the dominant nation of the other continent. They also have Nationalism.

We are not building railroads because we have no coal. So I scroll around, finding that both Japan and India have 2 sources of coal, though only one of them appears to be connected. I think I'll need more current world maps. So I broker around some maps and made a pretty hefty profit.

The updated WM shows that the extra coals are still not connected.

It also means that we can't RR until the Indians or the Japanese connect their 2nd coal. Interestingly enough, Russia also does not have coal.

MM cities, most put the focus on growth.

I also short rush a few banks using coliseum.

Press Enter

Turn 1 760 AD
Washington: university->worker
San Francisco: harbor->granary
Send worker towards core.
Continue to broker map every turn, I want to grab that coal before Russia does.

IBT: Game over? Russia sneak attack us and take Denver. Denver was defended by only 1 reg spear. It actually beat the first Corssack, but the 2nd one did it in.
The only other Russian troop that we see on the Mainland is a regular Musket. There is a Russian archer and a long bow threating Munich.

Turn 2 770 AD

After letting it sit for a day, I'm back at the helm...

Let's take care of the diplomacy first.
- I gift Munich to the French, that made them gracious.
- Next, buy alliance with China for Metallurgy.
- Buy Saltpeter and 24 gold from France for 48gpt and WM.
- Before I buy military tradition, I short rush Philadelphia, Chicago and Houston to knights, they will finish cavs next turn.
- Get MT and alliance with India for Steam Power.
- The MPP with France cost only 11gpt, it is done.
- 8 cavs and 1 musket will complete next turn. The frontline cities that already has troops make the switch to barrack. We'll need to upgrade some troops next turn.
- Every spare unit marches to the front.
- Shuffle units around to cover Boston.

Alright, that's it, hit me with your best shot.

IBT: Russia signs up France against India... then declares war immediately against France when a Frigate bombards Frankfurt.
A Cossack kills two warriors near Boston, losing 2 HP's in the process.
I see 3 other Cossacka, one moving into Denver, 2 heading NE.
Ack! We have to declare war against India because of the MPP with France. :sad:

Turn 3 780 AD
- I'm beginning the see the folly in the MPP, should have gotten a straight alliance.
- The loss in lux forces me to buy Ivory from France, as well taking out a loan of 427 gold, all for 43gpt.
- Forgot to sign China to a RoP, do it now.
- Upgrade some defenders to Muskets, as well as upgrade some knights to cavs.

I can attack Denver with 5 cavs this turn. I'm going to take a chance.
- Vet cav vs reg Musket: wins 3-1
- Reg cav vs reg Cossack: wins 3-0, we take Denver back :)

There is an enemy Musket outside of the city, I'm going to try to lure it to lower ground with a worker.

IBT:
A pair of Chinese Riders changes into Russian territory, one of them wins on offense, but both are slaughtered during Russia's turn.
A few more Cossacks and a Rifle are seen heading China's way.
A Cossack redlines but kills the defending Musket in Kongsberg.

Turn 4 790 AD
- Use a vet Cav to kill the offending Cossack next to Kongsberg, also rush the wall there.

- I hate to use Cavs as defenders but it's either that or risk losing the city.
- Heal troops this turn.

IBT: China does a good job during their turn, killing at least 2 Russian units. Russian get the better of them during their turn.
An elite russian Cossack ends its turn next to LA after killing a chinese MDI.
Another Russian Cossack chose to come after a warrior rather than attacking our cities. It kills the warrior but is hurt.

Turn 5 800 AD
- Revenge for the warrior with a cav.
- Cannon hurt the elite Cossack, catapults all miss. Reg Cav kills the Cossack 4-1, and promotes.
- Short rush 2 muskets via Longbow in cities that have 10spt and a barrack.

I can attack Dallas with 9 cavs this turn, I'm going to do it.
- first, vet cav kills a reg musket that's in the way, 3-0, Dallas is size 6 defended by reg Rifle
- vet Cav vs reg Rifle, take cannon shot, retreats 0-2
- vet Cav vs reg Rifle, retreats 1-3
- vet Cav vs reg Rifle, loses 4-2
- vet Cav vs 2hp Rifle, wins 2-2
- reg Cav vs 1hp Rifle, wins 1-1, and we RAZE the city, getting 3 workers and a cannon.

Cover the attacking stack with a musket.

IBT: bad combat luck for both us and the Chinese, we lose 3 cavs and a musket from the attack stack, Chinese did not appear to win any battles.
We did successfully defend against Russian attacks on Cleveland and LA.
WW hit us hard.

Turn 6 810 AD
- Interesting, it wasn't WW that hit us. Maybe we just lost an imported lux?
- I'm going to sign Japan to a alliance, in hoping that the war will make another lux available to us.
- Alliance with Japan for gem and 3gpt.
- Nope, doesn't do it, but Russia is at war with all nations of the world.
- Up lux to 20% and change a tax man to entertainer.
- Rush a musket in LA.
- Kill 2 exposed Cossacks before retreating back into cities.

IBT: France signs China against India
5 Russian Cossacks kill 4 defenders in New York. A vet sword is the only winner.

Turn 7 820 AD
Outside New York:
- Cannon and cats go 2 for 4
- 2 vet cavs takes care of 2 3hp cossacks
- a reg cav kills a 2hp cossack
- a pair of horses kill 2 1hp cossacks

Rush musket in New York, rush wall in Cleveland.

Washington has reached 20spt, but has to borrow a tile from Phili to do it.

IBT: Alright! 2 Chinese cavs show up. One of them kills a muskets and dies at the hands of a Cossack.
Just 1 attack on Frankfurt, and we beat it.
A fleet of Russian ships are sailing along our southern coast

Turn 8 830 AD
- 25% WW kicks in, raise lux to 30% and hire more taxmen.
- Galleons have a transport capacity of 4, which means we need at least 4 units in the core to respond to any possible landing. I pull 4 cavs back from the front.
- Bombard a cossack down to 1hp, take a shot with an elite horse -- wins but no leader.

IBT: Chinese cav once again wins on their turn but loses on Russia's turn.
An elite cossack kills a musket in LA.
Another cossack threatens NY but does not attack
Russian foot soldiers show up.
Russian Galleon leaves our coast, they may be heading towards our island.

Turn 9 840 AD
- Upgrade the ferry galley to galleon. It can make a 1 turn trip from Miami to St. Louis.
- Bombard 3 cossacks to 1hp, and kill them with cavs.
- Russia will talk and take peace straight up, but of course we can't due to the stupid MPP I signed.

IBT: Quiet, just 3 Longbows and a Crusader/MDI pair moving into striking range, and the Galleon near our island.
Miami riots.

Turn 10 850 AD
- Build a settler out of Kongsberg.
- Buy Chinese incense with Magnetism, that puts China into the Industrial Age.
- Buy Japanese Coal for 20gpt and 17g! :goodjob:
- Bombard the Crusader/MDI pair down, elite horse wins, lose a cav to redlined crusader, and wins with the next cav.
- Start railroading!

NOTES:
I deeply apologize for not believing in us enough. We're going to survive. We will get something out of this mess.

When railroading, remember that 3 slave workers = 1 native worker.

The silk city :) should be 1 tile E of where Yakutsk is right now. This location has only 1 tile of over lap with existing Russian cities, giving us the option of stopping the war without having to raze more cities.

The 850 AD Save

Very nice work. Can we grab the silk city before we end this skirmish?

Rik, good luck.

IHT:
Change (rioting) Miami from cav to musket. I don't like undefended cities. After I see all our core is undefended, choose cav instead.
We have some cavs with movement left in New York. Use them to attack Russian Longbows in our lands. 1 wins, 1 dies :mad:. Upgrade horsie in New York to cav.

IBT: Russian Frigates bombard Frankfurt, hurting a musket. 2 cossacks attack Frankfurt; we loose a musket.

[1] 860 AD - I'm going to team up the workers to quickly build a Railroad to the front. Move cavs to Frankfurt; it has lost it's musket in the IBT. Take 2 of the 4 cavs in Miami to go to the front. Trying to kill a 1/4 Cossack with a 5/5 elite horseman. We win !!! ... but no leader.
Upgrade a horsie to cav.

IBT: Russian Frigates injure musket in Frankfurt. A glorius 3/4 cav kills 3 Cossacks and then dies. 2 Indian Cavs land next to Memphis ( "defended" by 1 warrior). Russian archer lands on our island, next to undefended New Orleans.
Houston cav -> worker

[2] 870 AD - load the 2 remaining Miami Cavs into the Long Island Ferry. They land long Island and kill the Russian intruder.
Now Memphis; We can make peace with India and gain about 140 gold. Theoretically this could work; we only have a MPP with France; no a MA, which means signing peace with India is not treaty breaking. However France (our MPP partner) is still in war with India, thus the chance is big we will be forced to declare on India again, thrashing our rep and still loosing Memphis.

I decide to take the warrior out and gift the city to Japan, our only friend that India is not at war with. Japan turns from Polite to Gracious.

Finish the Railroad as far as Königsberg. We kill an elite Cossack.

IBT:
A Russian Cossack kills a musket who was on his way to Frankfurt.
Houston worker -> worker (will else go unhappy soon).
Denver Musket -> Worker (idem).

[3] 880 AD - Workers team up to build a railroad. Elite Cav kills a Cossack, but no MGL. Vet cav does also and promotes. Sell Gems to France for 327 gold. Meaning our Rep is perfectly intact.

The only horsie I can upgrade is an Elite. I want to save him for a Leader chance. And I don't feel like upgrading cats to cannon. Our defenses are holding. Our GPT is up to +131.

IBT:
Frankfurt Musket -> Market
Atlanta produces reg cav -> barracks
Seattle produces reg cav -> worker
SanFran produces reg cav -> barracks
Houston worker -> Barracks
Detroit worker -> aqua

[4] 890 AD - There are no Russian forces inside our lands. I heal the injured troops. Sending uninjured cavs to Frankfurt for an upcoming attack on Yakutsk. Also moving settler towards Frankfurt.

IBT. Japan and India Sign MA against France. I do not hope our MPP with France is going to trigger... Japan declares on France...
No war yet !!
China advances into Russia and gets slaughtered.
Miami produces reg cav -> barracks
Denver worker -> worker

[5] 900 AD - Upgrade cats to Canons. Russian Infantry spotted. 12 brave workers connect Frankfurt to the Railroad. The expose themselves to Russian Cossacks, but they might be lucky. I use our cavs to protect them.

IBT:
Indians want to talk. They want peace. No. Japan and Russia sign peace; thus breaking our MA with them, thus if we are forced to declare war on them; no Rep Hit. If it wasn't for a 4 turn RoP deal and a 14 turn Coal deal...
Chinese getting themselves killed again. Russians attack our worker-train and kill a musket and a cav; loosing 2 Cossacks themselves.
13 cities suddenly riot !!!

[6] 910 AD - We still have all our luxuries, thus this is WW ...
I desperately need a luxury. Up lux to 40%. I spot a 1/4 cossack; an ideal target for our 5/5 Elite Horsie. It wins without a scratch, but no MGL. Elite cav Vs 1/4 coss (other one of course ;) ) Wins, but no MGL. Elite Cav Vs 3/3 rifle: wins, but no MGL. Elite sword Vs 1/4 Coss... guess... :(

I move the cavs into Frankfurt; perhaps an assault on Yakutsk soon.

IBT: Russia and France sign peace ... Russians start Shakes.
Cities go back to happy.
Seattle worker -> barracks

[7] 920 AD - Russia and France have been tech-trading. We have about 35-45 % War Weariness. Time to end it quickly. 5/5 Elite Cav Vs 4/4 rifle: retreats. 5/5 Elite horse Vs 2/4 rifle: dies. 4/4 Cav Vs 1/4 rifle: wins and promotes.

IBT: Japanese want to talk. Do we want to ally against our MPP partner France ?? errr... no.
Massive Russian attacks results in many injured Cossacks and 1 dead American Sword. WW kicks in again.
Russians start Universal Suffrage.

[8] 930 AD - 5/5 Elite Cav Vs 1/4 Coss: win, but no MGL. I decide to charge at Yakutsk with our cavs.
3/3 Cav Vs 4/4 Inf - retreats, no damage.
3/3 Cav Vs 4/4 Inf - wins and promotes.
3/3 Cav Vs 4/4 Inf - retreats, no damage.
3/3 Cav Vs 4/4 Inf - dies, no damage.
4/4 Cav Vs 4/4 Inf - dies, 1 damage dealt; but Inf promoted.
5/5 Cav Vs 4/5 Inf - dies, Inf now 1/5
5/5 Cav Vs 1/5 Inf - Flawlessly wins and takes the city. Raze it to the ground !!!! That's 5 slaves for us. build a quick railroad to allow access to the new to be found city in 1 move. Move the settler and build "Kansas City" -> Temple. Due to our newly acquired Silks we can down lux to 30%.

IBT: Chinese help us stand the Russian counterattack. Los Angeles does loose his only musketman.

[9] 940 AD - sending injured cavs to Kansas city to heal and protect the city. Land the Memphis warrior on the Russian island between Russia's core and China; to pillage (if it survives).
Cashrush Musket in LA. Also the temple in Kansas city.

IBT: Japan and India MA against us ... Our coal is lost.
Switch finished cav building cities to muskets.

[10] 950 AD - The only thing stopping the Russian war is the Chinese MA; still 2 turns. Make peace with India; we pay 60 gold. This will thrash Ghandi's reputation; breaking his MA with Japan. Buy Indian Wines for Gems + 13 gpt + WM. I checked the Power screen and India can hopefully hold out against France; if not: they will stop supplying us with wines, thus we won't get a rep hit.

Lux to 20%. There are 2 redlined Cossacks just outside Kansas city. Our Elites attack and kill them flawlessly, but still no MGL. There is no coal on the world market, so our railroading project is abruptly stopped. The good thing is that Russia also has no coal. Japan has 2 sources connected and India has 2 sources, but 1 unconnected :mad: Making the worker mine instead of railroad.
The fun thing is that Japan, China and France have an Iron Works possibility, but due to bad city placement they can't.
The warrior on the island wasn't killed, so he starts pillaging.

-----------------------

The rep of India, France and I think also Japan is broken; while ours is still spotless. We have to get out of this MA with China. We can buy a tech from France, but I don't know if that is smart. Russia and France are far ahead. We need coal. I still think we should capture China, it has Saltpeter, Incense and coal (both we do not have) and they are not so advanced as we are and we need more land. Unfortunately we are stuck in a 10 turn incense deal. Please consider war with them when you can make a trade with them.

Good luck.

The Save 950 AD.

@Rik, great turns. Attacking the infantry was a gutsy move. Nice results.

Turn 0, 950 AD

IBT:
Chinese cavalry swoops in and kills off a 1hp Russian infantry.
France signs w/ Russia against China.
Kansas City, LA and Cleveland repel Cossack attacks. We loose a musket in Kansas City. Time to bring out the elites to mop up.
Houston – musket.

Turn 1:
Three elite kills, no MGL’s. One vet cavalry kill, no promotion.
Working mountains and some tundra forests. Stopped mining on gem mountain because we don’t have a city that can take advantage of that improvement.
Ran a few cavalry up to Leipzig and only manage to rough up an infantry and reveal a rifle as the next defender.

IBT: A Russian frigate runs down our galley and sinks her.

Turn 2:
Before we request peace we'll see how much damage we can inflict.
Pillage w/ warrior.
We take a shot at either capturing or destroying Leipzig. Which as it turns out is rioting. Ten cavalry attack, two die, six retreat, two manage to score a kill on an infantry and a rifle. That was sad.
OK, I cancel the deal w/ Mao. We make peace w/ Cathy and extort 380g from her. I would like to think our two cavalry got us some of that gold.
Now, what to do w/ Japan. They wont talk to us.
Well, our WW is over with so I just don’t care at this point.
Reduced luxury to 10% and MM all the cities away from entertainers and tax dudes.
India has FA and Russia and France are at tech parity so there are no real two-fers out there.
If we push research to 50% we can bring in Nationality in 11 turns vs. 22. If the research is pushed to 90% we get it in 6 turns and pretty much zero out our treasury.

The other option is to buy a tech from either Cathy or Joan. IF we go to Cathy we can use the gems to reduce the gpt.
Any thoughts?

OK, I cancel the deal w/ Mao. We make peace w/ Cathy and extort 380g from her. I would like to think our two cavalry got us some of that gold.
Now, what to do w/ Japan. They wont talk to us.
OK, then I won't spoil it that at the end of my turns Russia would pay 400 gold for peace...

It is Space Race, right? Then race for the Chinese space.
We don't need money, really. We need techs. I'd try to get ASAP.
But don't kill our still spotless reputation.

"Race for the Chinese' space" - Very funny!

But I'm still a bit in the dark as to what you think would be a good research path.

We can't go after the chinese for another 10 turns. If that's the plan then factories would help us more than anything.

I don't the there's a snowball's chance that we could get ToE so the Med/Electric path has no payoff at this time.

I'll trade for Industry w/ Cathy and switch builds over to factories.

JB: the trouble is that we have no coal and can't get any reliable source until we secure a (chinese) source ourselves. I'm not exactly sure if factories require coal (and too lazy to look it up), but we certainly cannot build railroads.

I don't know what tech is smartest; but Indus is high up that list.

From end of turn 2...

OK, Gems, 180gpt, 573g and WM to Cathy for Industry.
Gandhi’s not interested in an Industry for Nationalism swap.

IBT:
Joan wants more for the saltpeter. WM, 469g and 30gpt for Saltpeter.
Cathy wants us out. Sure.
Chinese and Russia are still at it. I’m afraid Cathy’s going to take our promised land.

Turn 3: 980 AD
The saltpeter deal was not needed. With a focus on factories I could have held off on the purchase for a number of turns.
Trade Industry to China for FA and 68g.
Ok, we’re close to a deal w/ Gandhi but he has zero interest in a gpt deal. Did we tarnish our rep?
There is still no coal for sale on the world market.
There’s no customer for our extra horses.

IBT:
We lost our supply of Ivory. The price was 43gpt from Joan but we can renegotiate for 27gpt. We take it.
We cancel the RoP w/ the Chinese.

Turn 4, 990 AD
We’re closer to a deal w/ Gandhi for Nationalism but he still is dead set against any gpt or luxury added to the deal.
Our Kansas City boarders expand and we now own Russia’s two silks. I imagine that just screwed Cathy’s rep. We can now trade these but run the same risk that a border movement could kill the deal for us.

We can get about 600g from France and Russia. That should be enought to seal the deal w/ Gandhi for Nationalism and we can get on to researching something else.

Any input on accepting the risk for selling these two silks? We go ahead and pull the trigger on this one.

Silk to France and Russia for 361g and 230g respectively.
Industry, FA, WM, and 877g to India for Nationalism.
Min run at Corporation.

IBT: China boots out our spying warrior. BTW, this is the warrior that was on the Russian island that was magically transported when told to leave. I still get a kick out of that.
Frankfurt riots.

Turn 5, 1000 AD
Worker movements.
New York is on the edge of happiness and will grow in five turns. Take a look at it in 1040 AD.
We can buy dyes from Cathy for slightly less (708g) than we’re paying in entertainment (720g). The upside is the added benefit from markets. The downside is that the money is going to the competition.
Well, we only really have markets in our core cities and not those that would benefit the most. We’ll hold off on this deal until we have more markets to make it worthwhile.

IBT: The Russians are fighting at the Chinese boarder and seem poised to take Tatung. The Chinese had better swallow their pride and make peace soon.

Turn 6, 1010 AD
Worker actions.
India has Communism.
Looking to see the cost of rushing the factory in Washington I accidentally draft a citizen. Not a big-deal since it’s ready to grow and does not affect the factory build.
We put a few warriors on our newly gotten silks so if the boarders change Cathy will let us know by kicking out our units.
Still no coal available on the world market.

IBT: The Japanese are now showing up on our coast with a few boats. We’ll move down the cavalry to greet them.
Our borders expand around New York. Although we have inferior culture compared to Russia we seem to be gaining ground. Any other explanations? The flip percentage numbers are dropping vs. the Russians and Chinese.

Turn 7, 1020 AD
Cavalry moved and cannons brought in to make the job that much easier. We have a single elite unit, a cavalry, to go for the MGL.
Draft a citizen in Boston.
We draft a citizen in Miami from a fishing tile and then disband to drop two turns off the factory build. The downside is one less gpt to the treasury. Trying the same trick in Chicago will be much more expensive so we don’t do it.
Three more turns on the incense deal w/ China.

IBT: Japan drops off a Samurai and a rifle. China wants to talk. MPP and RoP? How about trade WM’s and get an additional 32g? Sure.

Turn 8, 1030 AD
One of three cannons hit. Two cavalry take out the rifle and then our elite cavalry dies going against the Samurai.
We make peace w/ Japan straight up.
We can buy Corporation or Medicine from Joan but it will leave us totally strapped. Cathy will not sell us a thing.
In a few turns we’ll lose the incense and gain no cash flow so we’ll need to either up the entertainment slider or buy the dyes from Cathy, which are still on the market.
In five turns we get our gems back from France so that’s the item that will get us either the dyes from Cathy or the cash to pay for the entertainment.
We buy Corporation from Joan for 629g, 105gpt, and WM.
New min run is for refining. Nobody has it but I’m certain we will not be the first.

IBT: Japan sides w/ India against Russia. The Samurai hanging around Washington begins to head North. I was hoping he would get back on his galleon and get the heck outta here.
The Russians are building ToE.
The Russians take Tatung. Maybe it will flip to us?

Turn 9, 1040 AD
India has cash. Sell Corporation to India for 57 gpt, 986g, and WM. That’s a 1370g deficit at the moment. But if we can get them in the tech game than maybe we can start making more lucrative deals.
We ask the samurai to leave. Tokugowa assures us he’s just passing through.

IBT: French finish Shakespeare’s and Japan cascades to US. We lost our incense.

Turn 10, 1050 AD
A scan reveals that the only unhappy city we have is New York. We’ll hire a specialist to take care of that matter and bank the coin.
Hmmm, I’m unsure if what happened but now New York, Denver, Atlanta, LA and Miami are unhappy.
- New York is 5happy/5unhappy (1 entertainer)
- Denver is now 4h/4u (1 tax)
- Atlanta is now 4h/4u (1 tax and running a 1food shortage.)
- Miami is now 5h/5u (1 entertainer and zero growth.)
- LA is now 3h/1c/3u (1 tax)
The next leader can decide what to do with this but remember we get the gems back from France in three turns.

Notes:
- All of the AI’s are involved three wars except for Japan, only two. I think Cathy's too wrapped up in her own trouble to sneak us again so most of our builds are for infrastructure.
- We have one factory complete in Washington, which is now up to 36spt. 40spt would be nice for 2-turn cavalry but I can’t see how we can make it work w/o rails. Coal!
- Russia and China seem to be at a stalemate. Fine.
- There’s still 14 turns left on our precarious silks deals w/ France and Russia. So far so good.
- We’re strong compared to China and weak compared to all others
- Konigsburg is ready for growth but the only open tiles are off the coast. The next build there should be a harbor to up the revenue.
- I suggest rushing culture (libraries) in Cleveland and LA to capture the Saltpeter outside of Tatung.

Japan has 2 sources of coal and is exporting one to China. There is no more coal on the world market. What we can do is declare war on China; sign an MA with Japan against China for gold or gpt.
Then Sell the Corporation for Coal and whatever they want to give up.

If Japan backs out of the MA; the coal deal will still continue.

We have 8 cavs near the Chinese border, who will be facing only muskets. And we have a strong military, compared to them. With factories completing soon (cashrush if possible) we'll have a small, but quick and relatively powerful force to invade China.
And the Russians are still fighting China; we'll be quiet safe for counterattacks. The Russians have vroken the Chinese' backbone; it's up to us now to take the spoils of war. Macao and Tientsin first; then Shantung and then Beijing for the coal, Iron, incense and horses.

Now is the time to strike !!

Turn 0 1050 AD

We're at peace with the world :)

Russia is builting the ToE :eek:

Buffalo is hurting for happiness, and it's building a courthouse -- switch to temple with 1 shield waste. Same kind of problem with a few other cities. LA's courthouse stays.

Both productive island cities are switched to granaries.

Washington can give a pair of its shield tiles to Miami and still maintain 3-turn cavs (the breakpoint of 3-turn cav is 27spt).

Did you know that the stack of workers you have mining the mountain near Atlanta is short by exactly one slave workers? I count 10 natives and 5 slaves. 3 slaves = 1 native. It takes 12 native workers to mine a mountain.

Move our cavs closer to Chinese border. Upgrade some border town Muskets to Rifles.

We'll attack next turn.

IBT: More Russian Infantries heading towards China, two of them are blocking the road to the front. Good thing I sent the troops last turn.

Turn 1 1060

Buffalo: Temple->courthouse
I buy China territory map first, then declare war, want to see if any roads get pillaged.
From Japan, buy alliance for 27gpt + change. That frees up both the Coal and a fur. We buy both with Corportion. I realize my folly that I should have bought the alliance with straight gold.

Macao is on a hill, defended by reg muskets.
- vet cav wins: 3-3
- vet cav wins: 3-1, promotes
- vet cav loses: 1-4
- vet cav wins: 2-1
We capture the city along with 1 slave.

We can blitz one more city this turn, but with only 4 cavs available and Russians near by, I will hold until we can be sure to take a city in 1 turn.

IBT: China and France sign peace.
A Russian Cossack kill a Chinese Cav and something in Chengdu, then is killed by another Chinese Cav.

Turn 2 1070
Boston: Factory->3-turn cav
Seattle: Courthouse->Harbor

RR to the front.

Chengdu is guarded by Pike!
- vet cav vs pike: wins 4-0
- reg cav vs 2hp musket: loses 1-3, and promotes the musket
- reg cav vs 2hp musket: wins 2-2
- reg cav vs 3hp cav: loses 2-3
- 4hp elite cav vs 1hp cav: wins 1-2

And we take the city.

IBT: A Chines Rider comes into our territory. Russians take him out, but causes Cleveland to starve :(
Pollution at Washington.

Turn 3 1080
A R&R turn, kill a LB.

Gem deal with France ended, but there is nothing to buy, and France can't pay full value for it. They have no gpt available. In fact, they are Fascist.

IBT: India and China sign peace

Turn 4 1090
Washington: cav->cav
Atlanta: Marketplace->factory
Chicago: Factory->cav
Detroit: Granary->temple

Elite Cav lead the way, Canton feels our wrath:
- elite Cav vs reg pike: wins 3-3
- reg Cav vs reg spear!: wins 3-1
Take the city, no resisters!

That was too easy, let's try Shandong:
- vet Cav vs reg spear: wins 3-0
- vet Cav vs reg spear: wins 3-0
Shandong is ours.

Tientsin is guarded by muskets:
- vet cav vs reg mustket: retreat 1-3
- vet cav vs reg musket: dies 1-4
- vet cav vs 2hp musket: wins 2-0
- reg cav vs 2hp musket: wins 2-2, promotes and takes the city.

We now have the incense and coal, though they are not in our border yet. We are also stretched incredibly thin. Guess where those last 2 cav attackers come from? (hint: they took the long island ferry)

Workers RR just enough to get rifles into frontline cities. The rest start working on the core.

IBT: Chinese workers retreat, Russian infantry advance, both are ultimately futile.

Turn 5 1100
Konigsberg: Aquaduct->harbor, it also need a granary and a marketplace
Denver: temple->granary
Boston: Rifle->cav

Workers RR to Shandong, getting ready for the offensive on Beijing, rest of them help on Houston.

Turn 6 1110
Philadelphia: Factory->Cav
Frankfurt: granary->factory

I don't have enough healed troops, Beijing will have to wait.

Turn 7 1120
Washington: cav->cav
Chicago: rifle->rifle
Seattle: harbor->factory
Miami: factory->bank, time to think infrastructure

Beijing is guarded by reg muskets
- vet cav loses: 2-4
- vet cav wins: 3-1
- vet cav wins: 3-0

Take Beijing.

RR to front, defender moves in.

With incense, lower lux to 10%, only New York needs an entertainer.

IBT: France and Japan sign peace.

Turn 8 1130
Battle of Tsindao:
- elite cavs wins 3-1
- vet cav loses 3-0
- reg cav wins against LB, and we take Tsindao.

IBT: China and Russia sign peace.

Turn 9 1140
New York: Factory->Marketplace
St. Louis: Granary->Bank

Buys Espionage from France for incense, gem, WM, 45gpt and 13g.
Switch Washington to Intelligence Agency, due in 9 turns.

IBT: India signs up China against France.

Turn 10 1150
Philadelphia: Cav->Stock exchange
Chicago:Cav->Stock exchange
LA grows an riots, and the people want to expand our palace.

Attack on Xinjian, a city guarded by spears:
- vet cav wins 3-3
- vet cav wins 3-2
- vet cav wins 3-0
We take the city and sees a sizable Japanese stack next to it.

Setup the stack next to Xinjian, we can finish off China next turn (attacking this turn would require attacking across river).

Russia has just learned Steel.

Trade Espionage to India for their wine and some gpt. I want them to be researching something more useful. We now have another gem free up.

* * *

The trouble with this world that we live in, is that there are two top dogs. And in order to pull off trades, we need that 3rd AI to grab a tech. I've been waiting for India and Japan to make a tech advance, but it just isn't happening. So, I think we will have to go with the more covert type of research from now on, hence I traded for Espionage.

Of the top dogs, Russia is the leader of the pack. We'll have to steal off of her and broker to France for 2-fers. That mean the pre-req for stealing is both cash and a stout defense. We're still a long way from having a stout defense. Since Russian has mostly infantries running about, we especially need more bombardment units.

Right now, I'm having our cities building banks and stock exchanges. We'll need 5 stocket exchanges, and then we can probably stop there. Be sure to have a pre-build for the Wall Street ready when the 5th exchange is about to finish. We sure need a lot more troops however.

I won't feel safe until we get Replaceable Parts. I also think the time that we can make our move is between us getting RP and Russia getting Modern Armor. During that period, we have to set a world war in motion against Russia. Though we'll be the only one facing Russia's troops, losing all imported lux and WW will hit Russia hard, hopfully enough to slow them down for us to catch them.
