I'll answer your question. It takes having won a couple of minor Gauntlets and a couple of Major Gauntlets in the HOF. It takes your Conquest Award not to be a free one. It takes to have more than 1 Conquest Award. It takes your Domination Award not to be a free one. It takes to have more than 1 Domination Award. It takes your Diplo Award not to be a free one. It takes to have more than 1 Diplo Award. It takes 3 or 4 HOF spots with your name in them. It might even take a Gold medal too.
I claim to be innocent. I only admit having played a single decent Spaceship game and to have a general idea what cultural victories are about in one single and very specific difficulty level.
 
This is how I intend to play (challenger):

Settler on Ivory. Build warrior(s), then scout, then worker. Research Hunting, A.H., Mining, BW. See if I can steal me a worker. Then perhaps build a work boat to see if astronomy is needed.

AU_Armageddon, I've PMed you and hopefully we can sort out whatever needs to be sorted out in private, yes :D
 
i cant get this to open
i have the new patch and the mod instaled but when i try to start a game it says something is locked then the a box opens and says load failed
any help would be great

First, this probably belongs more in the Saves Available thread.

Second, have you installed Blue Marble or Bhruic's unofficial patch? They could be causing an error with the assets.

Third, post the exact error so the Staff can help you better.
 
sorry about wrong place but here is he message i get
the save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed
i don't think i have blue marble or the unoffical patch installed

Please download and run the AssetChecker provided in this post in the HoF Mod forum. It will tell you which file(s) are incorrect in your installation.
 
Going to give this BOTM a try. Glad to see Bts being used now. Hopefully it will open up for HOF soon.

My last GOTM try ended horribly as my ally started culturally taking over cities as I was at war with another :cry: . Monarch was a bit high for me. This one will hopefully work out better.

Edit: Looking at the start and already I'm in touble (haven't moved yet). I'm used to HOF and just finished Minor Gauntlet, I'm used to having my victory condition decided before I play. This open ended stuff is hard.

Looking at Ethiopia, Creative = fast initial border expansion, especially combined with the UB Stele. This points to a possible cultural or domination game I think. Only 6 opponents, minimum number, which makes conquest possible. Initial position looks like a possible production powerhouse. Enough food to get going, lots of hills for production, forests to chop. But possibly low in income, which might be a problem with no tech trading. Have to fix that with my second city site.

Organized means I can expand a bit more before I run into money problems. So plan I think is to look for one, maybe two more good city sites but then get my other cities with some kind of rush to take out 1 - 2 opponents. Then with 4-5 cities I can decide to go for cultural or domination/conquest.

No tech trading, got to think differently. I'm used to rushing to get Alphabet so I can get in good trades, that's out now. What to replace it with, not sure. Wheel, Animal Husbandry, Bronze working, Horseback Riding.. most important for quick start. Have to check on the time to produce my first worker compared to Bronze Working discovery to decide tech and build order. Probably want my first worker doing some chopping from the start. Oh, and I need Fishing for those clams.

Any comments from the veteran players on my thinking appreciated.

Not a joke. The Asset Checker looks at all the possible games you might run. It doesn't know that your next game is a BtS one.

But the fact that it didn't find and check your BtS directory indicates there's maybe a problem. Is there a folder called "Beyond the Sword" in your C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 folder?
 
It's been asked before in this thread but I couldn't find an answer: will we have a WOTM this month? Or in the following months? Or is it still being discussed?
 
So, yay!

Ever since BtS came out, I've got back into Civ bigtime, and I've been lurking like crazy in the GoTM boards, waiting for this to start. I even thought about joining one of the vanilla or Warlords games, but couldn't stand the thought of playing without the BtS features.

I'm going to make a habit of playing at the default difficulty, because once we move to emperor and beyond, challenger will be painful.

Anyways, for normal difficulty, settling in place looks good to me. With Moai Statues and Bureaucracy, it'll be a monster production capital.
 
Several people have mentioned Moai Statues. I know what they are, but I have not experience with BTS.

In my opinion, Maoi Statues are very expensive for a low-hammer capital. How long will it take for the investment to be returned? Are Maoi really worth it?
 
At the 'average' conversion rate of 1:food: = 2:hammers:, the statues add +0.5:food: to every sea tile, one half the effect of a lighthouse. But their build cost is nowhere near 1/2 that of a lighthouse...

They have their uses -- for instance, in the last BTS game I played, I was a financial civ with a city (not capital) by the ocean (with clams and fish) and a big freshwater lake, that also became a holy city... perfect for getting hammers into the city for later Wall Street builds, etc, and also produces 1 GP(proph) per turn, speeding up the shine as I hadn't got Stonehenge or Oracle.

Actually, that 1 GP(prophet) per turn is more important in BTS as religions spread much more slowly - so it's harder to spread a couple of religions in order to build more temples and hire more priests.
 
I purchased BtS when it came out, but haven't found the time to play a game yet. As a result, BOTM01 will be my first game of BtS (just as WOTM01 was my first game of Warlords).

Anyone else playing BOTM01 cold?
 


Unique unit:
The ethiopian unique unit is the Oromo Warrior. This is a gunpowder unit, that replaces the standard musketman, and has identical stats (cost 120 hammers, strength of 9 and movement of 1). Unlike the musketman, it is immune to first strikes, gets one free first strike of its own, and starts with Drill I and Drill II.




I have a couple of questions regarding the Drill promotions. Even though I've been playing Civ4 for a year or so now, I still have trouble understanding the value of them. I think this is partly because I don't notice any difference in combat when a first stike is involved. Now that I'm playing this UU, I really want to understand it better. For instance:
1) Does first strike ALWAYS happen or is it a % thing?
2) Are there any visual clues on screen when it occurs?
3) How does it compare to the City Defense promotions?
