Bow Ties: Cool, or Weird?

Bow ties?

A friend of mine at college was in the habits of wearing bow ties for every semiformal+ occasion. At uni graduation, he wore one with our school colors (purple and gold). I thought that was nice. Given how uncommon bow ties are outside of tuxedo events, wearing one definitely says something about the wearer -- that they have their own sense of style independent of cultural norms, or that they like archaic clothing. The statement depends on the person, I think.

Neckties draw attention to a line down one’s body. Bow ties draw attention across one’s body. Why would you trust someone who wants to draw attention to his ears?

:sarcasm:
well, he might be making the statement that he's a good listener instead of something else....

Junior approved the bow tie :P

If you are going to wear a bow tie you have to learn to tie the real deal not the clip on nonsense. It's a bloody nightmare...

I agree with Patroklos as well. I like his answer better than mine. It's a little weird, and therefore cool IMO (kind of like owning a snake or wearing some of the semi-African outfits you see). I wouldn't wear one, but then I hate ties too.

Where I come from the bowtie is symbol for one person.
Probably the next prime minister of Belgium, Elio Di Rupo.

Depends on the wearer and occasion. I do think, however, that they are cooler than standard ties.

...it is the bolo tie to which we should direct our scorn, and in particular the ridiculous-looking bolo tie-wearer Ken Salazar. I'm not interested or knowledgeable about the man's politics, but the bolo tie and three-gallon hat must go.

I like that look! Kinda like classy bling-bling for white folk. Nothing wrong with a touch of originality. Better than looking like every other chump in a monkey suit.

My dad has exclusively worn bow ties for over 20 years in his professional life . Consistency is the key . It's better to be "that bow tie guy" than someone who wears one once in a blue moon . Throw in the fact he is a fairly portly , jolly fellow , and he manages to pull it off.

Somebody once told me that bow ties are "affected" unless you happen to be famous. But if you're going to wear one, learn to tie it. Gentlemen over the age of 12 do not wear clip-ons.

*cough*hipster*cough*

You can really only pull it off if you have a complete look that goes with the bow tie. Your entire outfit has to be on point or you'll look stupid. I can't even find many good examples right now, that's how difficult it must be to look cool with a bow tie.

I'm normally against Bow ties with a print but I like that one ^

I like 'em, but only some people can pull off the look.
