For one, it was a syllabary, not an alphabet. Second, it wasn't "from scratch", it borrowed elements from written English (thus why some English letters appear in their syllabary).
That said, I would really love to see the Cherokee in Civ. I'd imagine them with a UA that gives them a science bonus for each neighboring civ that has more technologies than them. It was amazing how rapidly the Cherokee developed when they had the inspiration to do so.
