Bring Back Serial Thread Postcount

Agreed. This thread was started over two weeks ago. The least we should expect is "We read your request and are thinking about it."

This thing of totally ignoring our legitimate concerns and requests is just rude.

My personal input - I don't give the slightest crap about this issue. Please factor this into your deliberations :)

Apparently you gave enough of a crap to come here and say that.

I wonder if a poll might be helpful.

It doesn't seem like a big deal to me. But I will say that it is weird that posts in archived serial threads don't count for some reason. Either those posts should count, or no posts should count if for nothing else than consistency's sake.

The belief is that archived serial threads are basically just spam. Yet we have many big discussions that spin out of them, and we also have serial threads that get archived but are distinctly not spam but just run too long. Plus, sure, some people may spam about a rave, but I don't think most consider it spam when they post anything, regardless if it is a rave or a rant or whatever. It just doesn't fit anywhere else so it gets lumped there. That doesn't make it spam, it just means not all posts need to have dedicated threads.

I guess I'm not totally sure how spam is being defined here. Most other places it's something like "repeated unsolicited messages". I suppose that the threads that most fits that definition is the Random Thoughts/Rants/Raves threads as they are mostly repeated (not necessarily the same) messages. But even then, those threads exists because the community wants it to exist, so I wouldn't consider them unsolicited and thus not spam. And for the most part, I like reading through those threads, even the totally out there posts. If nothing else they help inform me about the poster.

I completely agree with you.

I'd go further and wager that the serial threads account for the majority of user engagment in OT as measured by posts, quotes and likes. I would appreciate it if a @Camikaze or @Arakhor or someone could run the numbers to confirm this. Assuming it is not a trivial ask. I do not know what tools you have available.

I don't have any tools to prove it, but the politics threads and the serial threads are certainly the two biggest engagements in OT.

That is of course only my opinion, but I can't think of anything else that comes close in terms of numbers of posts.

I have been a pc fan for a long time both as a member and as Staff. I been in lots of threads both public and non public on the topic. Postcount does have value and should be counted and shown, but not in every forum. IIRC there are whole forums without pc. I'm happy with how serial threads are handled. There is such a competition to be the op on each thread (and create an outstanding title) that I think no pc on them is the best option. I see them as chat logs, even if they do contain some interesting and entertaining comments. They can be very game like. Of course they vary from serial thread to serial thread. Each has its own style and speed to reach 1000. If there were a way to archive them and only count half the posts made as pc that might be a nice compromise.

And speaking of games....Mafia games are just chat logs with a more defined game and certainly are pc on speed. I'd probably make that a non pc forum. But that's just me, and since I don't play them, it is pretty easy to say that. :p

Good Lord. Mafia games were one of the things that first tempted me out of the Civ IV forum in the first place. People's post counts would be absolutely butchered if the NES/IOT/Mafia forums suddenly became zero PC.

I don't recall ever archiving the Clown Car threads, to be honest.

Nor those. They're still probably still lurking in the recesses of OT.
