Buce 02 - The Son's Of Ghengis Khan

Yes, sorry. I will need a skip. Things should be settled next week but for now I can't take it. Very sorry :(

I can take it tonight if we want to continue down the roster list.

Works for me.

1525 BC Turn 59 (9)
Found Almarikh next to the sea. Start on Curragh. Wait - I can't. We don't know Alpha. Well, that's it - I think we need to trade for it. Get it from Cathy for 4gpt and 123g. Since we will be getting 2gpt back from a deal ending with Russia next turn.
Explore.
Move the new warrior toward where the Chinese settler pair is in case we want to start something soon.

Almarikh (1) grows in 9, Curragh in 7

We have 53g and are making 8gpt.

Both China and Russia are up Masonry, Writing, The Wheel, Iron Working, and Mysticism.

Where the H is everyone else? If they were to the S we'd have met their explorers by now.
I'll apologize if I upset anyone with the trade for Alpha, but IMO we absolutely need to get boats out. We'd have met anyone else on the continent by now.

And the file
>>FILE<<.

Got it.

Is this a continents map? I thought it was pangaea. Anyway, good call with alpha, but we'll need iron working very soon as well. It could be a while before we can afford it, though. Meanwhile, I'll hold off on settling the fifth city.

I really had to look hard to find it, but I finally did:
We're on continents; we need to make contacts not only for trade but also to have someone to war against once China and Russia are finished.

You are correct about IW - we'll need that soon.

I am intrigued though about that Chinese settler pair we're tailing. Maybe we want something quick to get a tech or two? Or am I jumping the gun?

I'll be able to play tomorrow. Right now, I plan to build two more workers and some more units while waiting for IW to become affordable. Once we know where the iron is, we can settle our fifth city. If anyone thinks we should settle it sooner than that, let me know by tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry I haven't played it yet; I should be able to play later tonight.

Sorry about this, but I need to be skipped for the rest of the week--RL's a little busier than I thought it would be.

No problem, Norton.

Roster

Buce - on hiatus
CivA - just played
Norton II - skipped
Elephantium - UP!
Phaedo - on deck

Can you take it, Tusker? I know you just played before me, but Phaedo is up in Buce01 right now.

Yea, I'm not going to be able to take it for a bit, but I will try to have a look and see what I can see. Do we have short, medium and long term goals? If I recall, we have lots of space. I'll try to look at the save in the next few days.

I guess I can take it again, but I won't be playing until this weekend. We need a bit of discussion and reflection between now and then.

Goals:

Long - Crack open the world like a tasty peanut :)
Medium - Cow our neighbors and meet the rest of our victims.
Short - Build and sail our first curragh, prepare for war,

Cities:

Karakorum (3) grows in 1, Spear in 2.
Ta-tu (3) grows in 4, Spear in 4.
Kazan (2) grows in 5, Archer in 5.
Almarikh (1) grows in 9, Curragh in 7.

Military:

2 Workers
3 Scouts
8 Archers

Economy:

53 gold
+8 gpt
10% lux.

Diplomacy:

China (9 cities) - peace
Russia (9 cities) - peace
Both are up numerous techs (everything we can know about).

Discussion and questions:

Is everyone OK with a short 'research war' with China? We might be able to net a pair of slaves (if I declare as soon as the Archer is in position). There's some risk - declare ASAP and the Archer might lose; wait for a second Archer, and they might settle before we're in position.

How much military force do we need before we'll be ready to settle our fifth city? Ten non-MP archers? Twenty?

Finally...if China settles on a hill before our archer is in position, how much force do we need before we're ready to kill the warrior defending it? Two archers? Three? Or do we have to back down?

Pre-turn:

Lux slider to 0% with no riots pending.

IT:

The Chinese settler pair heads N!

Turn 1 (1475 BC):

To be continued...

Tusker, can you hold back on this for a while?

I think this game is suffering from a lack of attention, and as such has lost cohesive direction; I'll find time to take a look and post some thoughts later today.

Hmm, I think we are off to a less than ideal start.

My main area of concern is with the workforce - or rather, lack of it.

We have only two workers, both of whom are working the same tile; I would like to see us concentrate on getting all of those BG's improved before we contemplate war, and that requires that we delay placing our fifth city.

KKorum will grow in one; I suggest we switch the current build to a worker, then look to producing two more from somewhere ASAP.

Once we have some rapid Archer production going, I suggest we begin a strategy of razing for tech. China is expanding towards us - which is ideal; we will be able to initiate a policy of razing satellite cities, without too much in the way of reprisals - it's a long walk from their core.

Writing should be a priority tech because of the ability it gives us to form alliances; with a few more roaded tiles to work, we can probably get it gpt from Cathy.

Then I envisage a constant series of twenty-turn wars, gaining tech for peace, and switching opponent - and alliance - by turn; at the same time, we will need to expand, so we must look to Settler production too.

Buce: Certainly. I saved the game midway through Turn 1 and posted my writeup-so-far precisely so we could get some discussion going.

As for workers, which cities have built workers already? We have our initial worker (K'korum's?) and one built in Ta-tu, IIRC. According to the rules of this variant, we can only build one worker in each town, so the next two will need to come from Kazan and Almarikh.

Buce, what's your thought on an immediate strike on China's settler pair? It may or may not be viable - they headed north and away from our one Archer that could have attacked them on Turn 3.

Oh, and welcome back :)

Not sure without checking back through the turnlogs, but it's an absolute priority to get some out and working, IMO.

It's tempting, but I'd say not; I think it would be a mistake to put China on a war-footing while we are so ill-prepared to fight. Also, the town they found will be easily destroyed when the time comes, and a destroyed town will carry more weight in peace negotiations than would a captured Settler.

I've got the save just before Tusker started. I'll have a look and post some thoughts (if I have any) this evening.

Okay, I've looked at the save a bit. There doesn't seem to be a lot we can do quickly; however, I agree with Buce that workers need to be a priority. The military can be slowed down as the AI still has room to grow but we need to get those four cities as productive as possible as soon as possible. Wherever we can build our two available workers need to be switched as soon as we can. I also think that our best bet at this point is not to stack workers. Giving each city a worker until the cities are improved as much as they will work for the next little while is probably the most efficient way to improve our empire. We need those four cities to be productive. Nothing wrong with archer builds if we need to wait for pop growth but workers need to be the priority.

Beyond the workers, I suppose the military is important and archers are our best bet. I don't mind a couple of spears per se, but I don't think we will really need them for defense of our cities at the moment and getting offensive units up is more of a priority I think.

My plan for the two workers we have in this turnset is to connect all four cities to the road network, then start thinking about mining BGs. Once we go to war, we'll need to be able to move troops quickly.
