Bush to call for moon base, Mars missions

...it would need a major overhaul for it to have anything to do with space.

Okay, this'll just take a minute...

Here: United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs

Besides serving as the promoter and nexus of treaties, and facilitating international cooperation, they actually do something material, which is to catalogue all objects launched into space.

2) It must be truly international. If we are to colonize the Moon/Mars, we should make sure that perhaps the UN has control over it, and make sure that the USA just does not take total control (like it does to most other things)
George W. Bush wants it 100% american. According to some of the people in here, other countries should stay out and if they plan competiting project, then it's a declaration of war to the US.

I guess that's one more treaty he'll have to break. Gee why do they keep signing stuff they have no intention of upholding?

Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. States Parties shall be guided by the principle of co-operation and mutual assistance in all their activities concerning the exploration and use of the moon. International co-operation in pursuance of this Agreement should be as wide as possible and may take place on a multilateral basis, on a bilateral basis or through international intergovernmental organizations.

The whole point of the international agreement (which practically every serious contender has signed) is to avoid a world war over the moon.

It doesn't matter what Bush says or thinks, he won't be building anything. Anything he says are simply words for the history book.

As one example of competition, the UK is heavilly involved in NASA, ESA and has an independent space centre. Washington may consider those investments to be "conflicting interests" but they are unlikely to block foreign economic and intelectual investment in American projects.

I hope you're right! I understand the current policy though is to develop a military platform in orbit. Kinda grates on the spirit of the treaty (the first treaty, regarding space itself). If nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction find their way up there, then... well I'll just have to apologise to my son.

(It would be illegal too)

I think it's a great idea, and I'd love to see it happen. I even have an idea on where we can get the money... we just cut our aid to other nations (except Iraq and Afganistan) in half. Presto, all the money we need and then some (j/k)!

AllhailIndia: You are from India, home of a floating cloud of filth that darkens the sky to the point of LA looking like it has clean mountain air, and your telling us to stop driving SUVs? come on man.

 Nice shot primate.

... Let's not be overly rational about this. We must explore not just space, but how we feel about it, what it does to our identity. ...
Well, rationality has never been the supreme trait of the monkeys - nor of our Homo Sapiens cousins.

The Ape Clan very well remembers when humans were first crossing the Congo River delta in a hollowed-out tree trunck. They were bragging about it like they had landed on the moon! ;)

Now humans indeed have reached the moon. We have seen a blue-brown-white earth-marble rising out of moon-dawn. By intellect, we should know now how precious our Asylum Earth is, yet we proceed wasting it, like we had another Earth in supply.

I really do appreciate all forms of space exploration and colonization.

But I wonder, how can you afford to reach for the stars, as long as there are humans out there starving?
