C2C: Promotions

Well,
i haven`t seen a terrain Ice in the last twenty games.
Is it possible that ice as land terrain isn't created with the PerfectMongoose map?

No. I have lots (also using PM)

I get Ice occasionally now that I'm trying PM, but I still think all the maps generate too much permafrost and not enough tundra.

The 4 Terrain Promos need something. You don't get big enough areas of Lush or Barren to even bother with. More important promos than those 2.

I agree that there is a major disparity between the usefulness of the terrain promos for desert-like tiles and cold-family tiles, and the others. None of the others are really much use (as in worth buying) currently. Partly this is down to the map (reasonably IMO) making fairly large contiguous areas of desert or of cold terrain, but only scattering he other terrain types. However, I can't say I really find this a major issue (i.e. - bigger fish to fry are easily found)

Yeah these are just bait fish promo considerations.

Mortors get medic promotions! Is this intended?

edit - nvm - I had a monk stacked with them ;)

I noticed a thing with all the coast related promotions: they all refer just to "normal" coast but hey don't work for tropical and polar coast. Is this intended?

The promos are: coastal assault, coastal defense, pirate, natuve seafaring (not sure about this because I never got it)

No, that is not intended. I should probably update them.

@ls612

I cant sleep thinking about it ;) so i must to ask
When you plan to add equipment promotions (armors, weapons etc)?

I'm actually not going to be making those, Thunderbrd will. Long story short, I don't agree with the philosophy behind Equipment in civ.

I always think that spliting promotions to categories is a good idea:

1 skills or programmed skills for future units from XP like it is now
2 Equipments for gold (we have a lot gold in game and it is realistic that more rich country has better equiped army)
3 Religious promotions from buildings (or even for faith points if we will want to add them to game)
4 Disease and injuries - negative promotions from damage and others negative effects
5 morale and emotions

What is wrong about that kind of system?
I love this mod and I am worried that modders cant agree each other so I am here as mediator ;)

I'm not saying it isn't possible, I just don't think it will work too well.

Outside of not using gold to control equipment in any way (the ai is going to be heavy enough without it) pretty much all of the above will eventually be implemented. As to when? There's still a lot of setup to do, including a lot of AI work. I don't want to release a full implementation without it being thoroughly thought through. I want to win over those naysayers like the aforementioned ;)

And I can't do that without it being nicely polished before its even seen.

I agree with this. I think the general unit strength curve and a few promotions to handle unique items (like Bamboo Armor and Poison Tips) is enough. Anything more and we are heading down a road that Civ was never meant to go down. From what I see, there are some proposals that are going to wind up at the point where we are differentiating the "Light Thrusting Infantry Bronze Sword" from the "HEAVY Thrusting Infantry Bronze Sword" from the "Light CUTTING Infantry Bronze Sword" from the "Light Thrusting CAVALRY Bronze Sword" from the "Light Thrusting Infantry IRON Sword" from the "Light Infantry Bronze AXE", and that's not where I want to go.

I always think that reason for adding equipment promotions is for example

Axeman
- requires copper or bronze or iron

It is normal that iron axe will be stronger than copper one so if you build your axeman with access to iron you have better equipment promotion than someone that have access to copper only.

The equipment idea works better if you only have Axeman and the single unit type upgrades from Stone to Copper to Bronze to Iron to Steal to Many Layered Folded Steal, etc...
You can make the same for higher tech items as well:
e.g. a (single) Fighter unit improves as Tech/equipment improves (going from Bi-plane to mono to swept wing; engine upgrades; weapon upgrades; radio; radar, etc...)

It doesn't work if you are already incorporating those increases by having a new base unit.

Count me among the naysayers for now. I think you're going to have to do a lot better if you want to convince me that everything you're proposing should be included.

Exactly. I think unit strength progression does the job and equipment would just add one more variable that would have an effect on actual combat so small that it wouldn't be worth the player attention to understand it.

I'd be willing to consider an exception for Iron, as currently the melee units don't get upgrades until a good bit after Iron Working, which I feel as slightly unrealistic. But other than that and the special ones we already have (Bamboo, Poison), I think that we don't need equipment.

But bambo doesn't grow every where and isn't imported to all your cities so that All your units can have that armor. Iron Is, Copper Is. There needs to be at least a Copper and an Iron armor besides just bambo. Very lopsided concept. Plus the event Wootz Steel should this play a better role?

Poison is totally different imo. It's not eqiupment per se.
