Ug.. now i remeber.. yes! KILL THE ANIMATED! for they will eat our children!

Nothing wrong personalyl with that one Rik...but i can see how seeing all these loooping animations would get annoying and distracting very quickly.

I would support animated avatars if I had the expertise to actually create an animated avatar. :p

There are some animated avatars which aren't bad (like Rik's example) but there would be too many really annoying, obnoxious avatars which would be used to insult people or annoy people.

^ agree with above.

Some of the one's I've seen are: vomiting, blood spilling out of eye socket and one of those flashing ones that causes headache/epilepsy/coma. While some of these are quite funny, others are just plain annoying.

So no, let's keep avatars static.

Edit: nice animation Rik.

If I was going to do an animated avatar it'd have to be either something like one of these two...

(the thumbnail doesn't move on one of them)

I didn't like animated avatars on other forums, but Rik's and Igloo's are cool.

Now I need to go rent Spaceballs.

I say no animated avatars.

But how bout this (and yes this could be the stupidest idea ever, but it would satisfy people..I guess)

How about 1 day of the year we allow animated ones. But AFTER that day is done, back to normal. Call it Can we please have animated avatars Day!

I dont know how that would work but hey, its a good idea I guess, or not really....

a faff setting which 24 hours, and patrolling it.

I have no desire for one personally, but:

They have them on LiveJournal, and I've never found them distracting.

Bandwidth is a non-issue - if that's a problem, then put a restriction on file size. Edit: There's already a file size restriction, so that's not an issue.

Edit: In fact, you can also disable viewing avators anyway. Regarding distraction, I find avators full-stop a bit annoying, but people who dislike them can turn them off. It seems odd to have rules on what types of avators people can have, given this.

You can also turn off sigs, for the person who commented on sigs being annoying. Honestly, what happened to the days when users configured their own settings based on what they wanted, rather than trying to enforce it for everyone?

Some vBulletin sites , such as forums.toonzone.com, let you have ANIMATED AVATARS!!!!!!!!! Why is there a rule that you can't have them here? Does it take up too much space?

lol, yea, WE LOVE ANIMATED AVATARS!!!

In general I find most animated avatars annoying and distracting. If everyone had good taste, it would be different, but I would be afraid we would very quickly see too many that were were just terrible. Now that said, I would support an "animated avatar weekend" once a year. It would be something many would look forward to and plan for. Such events can be community builders as members share their expertise and creativity in preparation for the "event". I could see it as a showcase event that is anticipated and enjoyed by many.

I would set up categories and allow members to vote on winners in each category. Winners would get a "small badge" for their sig or "location".

Categories:
Civ related
OT themed (religion, politics, evolution, etc.)
Most annoying
Most subtle
Most original

I'm sure there are other good ones.

I think that this site should have general and forum specific "holidays" when usually non permitted activity is allowed under controlled circumstances. This could be one of them.

Weekend huh? Thats better then a day. And we can have awards given out...I like that...And how bout the Mods vote for those catagories or the CFCers could too....Its almost like the April Fools thing when we switch avatars, or something...

Also could put on the Calendar thing on the bottom when we 1st enter the forums, (something like events in the next 3 days or something... at the bottom under B-Days)

The frozen picture is a far better avatar. The animated one is just too animated!

Very small animations that are almost invisible is ok with me, but not animations that are very noticeable.

In fact, I find some of the smilies too animated.
These ones for instance: :woohoo: :rotfl:
