Canada - "America Junior"?

What I'd like to know is why does this same old topic keeps coming up?

Mostly because of the pathetic inferiority complex that has plagued this country since its outset.

Let's get over it and on with our lives, yes, we are quite similar to America, we also share similarities with Europe, especially the UK.

So what? I'm still confident in Canada, our values and our identity, which I still believe is distinct enough that we as Canadians should see it without having to outright define it.

So what if we have the world's loudest country next door (by that I mean "most prolific"), doesn't mean we still can't be seen for who we are and shine in our own light.

I would like to ask all non-Canadians on these forums to tell the people of this country to cut their bloody whining, please and thank you.

Given our current behaviour, we'll be irrelevant as a nation within 10 years.

Sysyphus is right, Canadians are much more likely to call Canada something like this than we are. We really don't think about it that much.

 sysyphus.

Right now, even a flag-waving "America is not our problem" guy like me is finding some value in the famous clash song...

"I'm, so borrrred with the U-S-A, but what can I do?"

Perhaps a thread on "what Canada must do to be relevant in the world to more than just the Canlit crowd and a few CBC "personalities"" might be an idea.

You may think that this is a stupid thread but saying things like these just prove your ignorance, because there are millions of immigrants to the United States every year, and some of them are even Canadians. Imagine that!

And some of the Canadians move back to Canada after two and a half years. ;)

But that was a stupid response.

As a Canadian that has lived in the US, I can safely say that I represent everyone with a similar opinion to mine. And we are united in saying that Canada will never join the US. We will die to protect our sovereignty.

But day to day life isn't any different in the two countries. Besides the weather.....(and more black people in Florida, and more French people in Moncton) it's pretty much the same. Crazy drivers, stupid politicians, and I can never make enough money. :)

Oh really? Specifically, why? I'm interested to know.

Well, I could say the same for myself. So could everyone. We all could represent those with similar opinions.

And we are united in saying that Canada will never join the US. We will die to protect our sovereignty.

I wasn't disagreeing, if you read my second post.

Well, we can agree on this.

Um, WTH would the US ever WANT Canada in the first place?

It'll never happen because the US will never allow it to happen.

i don't think the us would mind getting their hands on all that land. i think it's foolish to say the us wouldn't want to more than double its landmass.

if the us could, i'm sure they would.

but canadians won't, that's why it won't happen.

Er... I can honestly say that no American I have ever known ever cared about adding more landmass to the US.

There seems to be some misconception. While Canadians seem to be completely preoccupied w/ the US, Americans don't care about Canada one way or another, except in the sort of way say Austrailians think of New Zealanders.

this has nothing to do with the people of the us. but i'm positive, that, given the opportunity the us administration (and not just this one) would jump at the chance to unify with canada.

You seem to be suggesting that the US would seek to control Canada through some sort of imperial action. If you honestly believe that, then you have no understanding of American society. We may have caustic amatures running our government and some greedy people in the corperate sector; but the American people have absolutely no desire for empire, that was a European affliction. There will be no American Empire.

What you are suggesting belongs in the world black helicopters and alien abductions.

Methinks you are engaging in a bit of hyperbole.

Considering the US government is made of American people, of whom neither Republican nor Democrat would ever wish to make Canada part of the US...

Make new states is about so much more than just adding their resources. The people in those states would become Americans. That means they'd have all the rights and powers of any American citizen. Why would we want to give Canadians seats in Congress? Why would we want a Canadian as our president? Canadians tend to really despise Americans. FFS most of them think the US is responsible for 9/11. Why would any American administration EVER want to give them a voice in our country?

Well, plastic, you would want me as President. But granted, it wouldn't be worth all the trouble it would take to get there.

@Drewcifer
i did not suggest imperial action. though i wouldn't put it past the us...

@Plastic
almost every country in the world would willingly accept some extra land. land is power. the us wants power. and besides, the us administration would like to annex canade, make new states or whatever.

don't fool yourself into thinking that the people in power have the same ideals as you. there is no reason for a war, for example, yet there will be - because the us can have a war.
