Capto Iugulum

If a city of the Confederation ever hosts the Olympics, not a single team from anywhere will be debarred, and we hope other reasonable nations across the world, when their turn comes to host the Olympics, will take a similar attitude, rather than barring nations either out of a similar sentiment to Brazil's, or out of a need felt for revenge on Brazil's athletes.

[OOC]Read this with Hugo Chávez talking as background or, better, imagine him reading the following speech. Not very good, I know, but I tried my best. ;)[/OOC]

Speech to the people of Venezuela

People of Venezuela! Rejoice in your newly gained freedom! For I, President General FelipeTrujillo, spiritual heir to our glorious Libertador Simón Bolívar, have freed you from the hands of the corrupt oligarchy that ruled this noble country under the masquerade of the so-called free elections that served merely as a power switch to trick you, the people, into believing that we did indeed were submitted to a fair government.

But that, my people, has greatly changed, for I saw the truth beyond their lies and schemes, and now these slanderous scoundrels that dared call themselves “legitimate government” while they were just usurping its place, are now in exile! For I dared look deep into their eyes, and when I did they knew that I would put them down, and they feared me and they ran away. Let it stand as sign of my righteousness, that not a single shot has been fired, thus certifying my good position across the whole of our society.

But we must grow greater as a country now. Without the filthy bureaucrats, who will undoubtedly try to poison the amazing environment of our country with lies against my person. They will call me tyrant, they will call me autocrat, but beware, ye of little faith, for I am now the unmovable pillar upon which the state stands. I have regained the greater freedom for the Venezuelan people, but this freedom needs to be kept, and to that purpose only one measure is viable: an enlargement and enhancement of our military, with which our ability to defend from shadowy enemies and betraying neighbours, should the case ever be it, will greatly be enlarged, resulting from it that we’ll stand as banner of freedom and all over the world we will be known as such, and tales will be told about our great army and its glorious achievements.

To that purpose, my government will build one of the finest military academies in the world, the General Trujillo Academy, with help of our American fellows and their military advisors. May it provide the finest officers that the world has ever seen, and may our army rise in morale and tactics and quality overall. We cannot let other countries, such as Brazil, to leave us behind in technology, and we cannot in any case leave our military to decay and perish before the test of time, we must change the ways of the old and corrupt government. It is now more necessary than ever to modernise, for we just come from a Great War and the geopolitical turmoil of these days menaces each year a new one. One that cannot be afforded, not even to win, let alone lose. We must endure during the hard times, and train to endure during the good times. This is the purpose of this new work, this new project, this new initiative that will bring us further forward in spirit. We will be the vanguard of the fight for liberties and freedom, and our might will be renowned and feared all over the world.

But if well our army has to be the vanguard in the fight for liberties, our navy has to be its safeguard. We can’t let our navy as it is now, for even if powerful, it would still not be enough. It is absolutely necessary to keep up with the level of army development when taking care of a navy. A nation is measured by the combined strength of its arms, and thus we must build a navy that will keep us safe, a navy that can stand the test of combat and cause the enemy to fail it. It is absolutely indispensable and necessary for a country like Venezuela to keep a navy of a force enough to hold the enemy back, for if freedom can only be retained and kept through military might, building just an army leaves a country crippled. It is thus necessary to become this stronghold of liberties through the creation and enhancement of such a navy that it will honour the easure of its men. Thus, on the naval front, the Old Guard has been licensed. They were old men who opposed the newer changes that are being brought to naval warfare these days, and the newly appointed Admiral Ferrada has taken the lead to bring us further in submarine research, a technology which is deemed as vital in the future by this government.

This will show up to be the best and most effective of the strategies, my people, to stand foreign attacks and illegitimate claims. May we all remember this glorious day in which the old corrupted government fell, and Venezuela entered its era of greater prosperity and glory.

Viva la Revolución! Viva Venezuela! Arriba Bolívar!

Allowing genocidal regimes to participate in games meant for world peace puts a stain on the very idea of the Olympics. Brazil will host the Olympics again, and in the future the world will understand why our actions were called for. So long as nations such as Franco-Burgundy find it necessary to support the genocide of innocent civilians we cannot take them seriously in their efforts to maintain the peace Brazilians fought so hard to gain.

Russia has been expelled, so League members cannot possibly be accused of support of Russia anymore. Retract your ban, or Flanders will lodge a complaint with the IOC.

From the Confederation

The notion that we support the genocide of innocent civilians is directly contradicted by our diplomacy, wherein we directly condemned Russia's actions. We took no part in any genocide, nor did we know about it beforehand, and we did our best to ameliorate the situation by putting the motion to the League to engineer a moderately successful evacuation of Prussians from Russia that undoubtedly saved many lives of Prussian refugees. Seeing as the world is apparently oriented against Russia at present, it is only sensible that we should maintain our purely defensive alliance with Russia to deter hasty and unnecessary action by either Russia or her enemies.

OOC: Could people please stop saying "Franco-Burgundy"? It quite clearly sounds completely absurd. No-one insists on calling the Austro-Hungarian Empire "Austro-Hungary", and if they did it would sound ridiculous. The name of my country is the "Confederation" or the "Franco-Burgundian Confederation", not "Franco-Burgundy".

OOC: How would you call Austro-Hungary?

OOC: The Austro-Hungarian Empire, or simply Austria if I were talking casually (edit: or indeed Austria-Hungary, as MusicLord says below). At any rate the example is irrelevant; I would just like to plainly express my distaste for the use of "Franco-Burgundy" as a diplomatic means of address.

Austria-Hungary?

@GamezRule MusicLord: Hmm, yes, that would certainly be better. ;)

Bah. Austria is overrated. Austria-Hungary is how it should be called.

Your athletes are allowed now that Russia is expelled. Russians are not. If you wish to bring up debates in the IOC over supporting genocidal regimes, that is the League's prerogative. Brazil will not be dictated to by cowards, traitors and mass murderers.

The United Kingdom wonders whether the Confederation's alliance with the Russians will at all be considered by the League as part of this ostensible shaming of the Russian Empire.

Russian athletes are not the Russian government. We are strongly opposed to the precedent set by banning athletes of a given nationality solely because of the actions of their governments, especially given that the Russian government is unelected.

We will only allow Russian athletes through a third party, with no Russian officials allowed on Brazilian soil.

The United Kingdom wonders whether the Confederation's alliance with the Russians will at all be considered by the League as part of this ostensible shaming of the Russian Empire.

The Confederation hopes not, because then the League would on the one hand be considering acting unjustly - as, indeed, we have already justified our alliance amply, apart from the fact that it is our sovereign prerogative to be allied to precisely whomsoever we like - and on the other hand run the risk of being even shorter of major powers within its ranks that it is in the present circumstances.

Your affiliation with the Russians continues to confer your implicit approval of Russia. This is noted with disappointment by our nation.

Our affiliation with the Russians might imply approval of Russia if we had not explicitly stated our dissapproval of Russia.

We will be closing our embassies for your two regimes this year, and cutting all diplomatic relations. Franco-Burgundy may regain diplomatic standing with Brazil by ending its approval of the genocide committed by the evil Russian regime.

We strongly disapprove of the genocide committed by the Russians, and find the deafness of the retiring Brazilian ambassador quite astounding on the matter.

Also, cease and desist from referring to our country as Franco-Burgundy.
