Capto Iugulum

OOC: I don't think Florida has like 200+ EPs to give in one round, in a delivery pattern that fits whether they're being blockaded or not (see EQ's comment to CD that not all support made it through in 1913 or 1914, I'm not sure which), and they received such aid before they made peace with Florida... I'm pretty sure it's the other proletarist state that's been caught funding violence everywhere else.

OOC: Look at Japan. :3

OOC: that's.. a bit of a stretch. they don't have a Proletarian government, and there is a much more likely candidate in Europe. Scandinavia is the most likely source, being the only major Proletarian Power.

OOC: Bit of a stretch and NESers are not compatible. Who has the most to gain from the USA being tied down in a long war? The Pacific Concord, my dear sir.

To: Argentina
From: King Juan I

While We disagree with the government's housing program your labeling it proletarist is ridiculous. It was a liberal action that the fair contenders (the Liberal Party) for Peruvian government would approve of, and a one-time program in order to disperse the Chinese population for rapid assimilation.

A liberal program would be open to the poor, a social proletarist program would be open to all; neither should be completely paid for by others. Argentina is concerned that such a policy is damaging Peru's own businesses, as elements of the Conservatives already seem to think so. Peruvian Liberal party support for these measures is also not apparent to us; we had understood the Liberals preferred spending more on policies that interact with the other nations of South America, and less money on damage control for previous Japanese 'gifts'.

As for the Peruvian army, Brazil made it very clear in those negotiations where it threatened to wage multiple forms of strategic warfare against Peru's population over a naval base, that Argentina sent them plans on how exactly to invade Peru before Brazil had even formulated any maps itself, and we note that Argentina did so before calling on Peru directly or even thanking us for showing your inspectors around freely.
Perez was right about Argentina the first time after all. It is no surprise that a world respectful of the UK, and forced to defer to Brazil will have no time left over for Argentina. At least Brazil tells the truth.

Brazil did not threaten to wage war over a Peruvian naval base. Brazil threatened to wage war over a permanent Japanese naval base on the South American continent, a base that would have no purpose, except to launch an attack on Panama. Our foreign office did not immediately respond to this crisis, (OOC: Real Life) and is surprised that maps, supposedly created by Argentina to support such an intervention in the Galapagos, purportedly exist. Our first true response to this crisis was to thank for allowing our inspectors, and are disappointed King Juan believes otherwise. Argentina has no need to be as deferred to as Brazil and the United Kingdom; we seek merely liberty, peace, and prosperity for all nations. Perez's correctness is a moot item; had Peru decided at any point to stop aligning itself with non-American absolutists and undercutting businesses, and sought to normalize relations with its' neighbors, no one would be at this point. The aggressive and enormous increase in the Peruvian army, as well as Peru's continued foisting of crises on the Americas is indicative of otherwise. We hope that Peru seeks to avoid such aggression and crisis-manufacturing and supports a relaxation of such tensions with its' neighbors in the future.

Hopefully the population and the liberal party will believe us when the ambassadors turn over the negotiation logs to them, if not Argentina and Brazil's lies may gain power over my people, whose will to whom We ultimately defer. If the new government is liberal We will advise it to trade and align with the United Kingdom (if they accept us of course), or if they demand that we trade with a large power within the continent We will advise a liberal government to approach Brazil before Argentina. They will not try to turn our backs.
This concludes Our side of communications with Argentina.

If the government is Liberal after the election, hopefully its' policies will be clearer. You call Argentina and Brazil liars and backstabbers, but we are not the ones seeking means of disturbing the peace of the Americas. If Peru continues to say that it wishes to ease tensions, but then does the opposite, that seems to suggest that Peru is the one negotiating in bad faith.

From Occitania
To Germany, Italy
CC all parties seeking peace

The issue which has disturbed peoples of Europe most recently, that of the Spanish Civil War, has been resolved by the Monarchists and Republicans sides. A peace has been arranged by the ally which brought you into the war, and will not take full effect without your acknowledgement.

Your absence in conversation about the war speaks your true intentions to the community of nations. Sign the Emperor's peace agreement, or we'll have to assume you are indeed looking to conquer, without justification, parts of our allies. You entered about Spain, changing your mind and adding another, irrelevant, war goal would indeed be very disreputable, not to mention a pretty hard sell to your home populations.

OOC: Look at Japan. :3

OOC: That's right. It is me. I've got tankers of EP (invented said tankers) with cloak shields (invented those too), cruising through up through the Caribbean to supply the Proletarists. I hope you're not mad Lucky, and I imagine you'll be please to know these ships went over and not through the Panama Canal (I did leave the customary tip. Afterall, manners are manners). The reason I decided not to go through up through Florida is because it seem like a good time to try out my new engine, which is powered on crushed dreams and empty beer bottles. So, that's it, I confess. :sarcasm:

OOC: George Washington Carver, IIRC, had no interaction with Cajun communities, and in this universe the only Cajuns are immigrants from Burgundy ;)

You know what's worse than the meter problem, though? The standard kilogram is losing mass, and we have no idea why.

I can see why we're referencing it to the speed of light in a vacuum--so anybody can calibrate their meter sticks without an expensive trip to Paris--but the kilogram is still a chunk of metal in a glass case.

OOC: Very true, and a very interesting problem at that. I like the proposal of redefining in terms of C-12 atoms, though sometimes I think they might do better to define mass in terms of hydrogen, since that is much more ubiquitous in the universe. I'd reckon the standard is the same(ish) and that the replicas that are used to check against it have picked up stuff from the air around it.

The problem with trying to define mass in terms of atoms is that you'd end up with astronomically large numbers of atoms to get a workable unit of mass. The current system, where a a gram is defined as the mass of water at melting point contained in one cubic centimetre, works pretty well, I think. Perhaps another material could be used in this TL.

Thats actually an interesting point raised - nobody has ever developed the metric system in this TL, since the Orleans revolution was crushed pretty fast and the Italians still had a monarch. There's probably a set of standardised measurements out there somewhere, because its impossible to do any science on an international level without one, but it is probably based on the physical measurements of one particular guy or something. Its actually a pretty interesting thought.

Also, nobody calculated the speed of light to much accuracy till 1975, so that can't be a standard of measurement in this TL.

Also, re: Proles.
Yes Lucky, it was the Japanese who are supplying the proletarists. Not the big, scary proletarist nation that has been exporting its ideology in Hungary or something. Nope, must have been Japan of course.

OOC: Only thing I've done to help the Proles is allow all the angry Proles in Florida to leave and fight and die somewhere else. The fewer Proles in my borders, the better, because once they're gone, they're not coming back.

It is highly gratifying to be referred to as "big" and "scary".

Why would you go over Panama to begin with? You own Jacksonia and Florida as your pets. :p

Like I said, to utilize my new tankers that run on crushed dreams and empty beer bottles.

@Bair the Normal: I believe you forgot to pay education in your stats, hence why the bank may be lower than expected.

@GamezRule: Just send in orders for them, and Turkey is yours.

A Lengthy but Important Post to All Players

In a couple of days (HINT: 48 hour warning), I'll be posting the 1919 update. This is the 20th update of the NES, and important milestone for all of us. Those of you who have played the same nation since the beginning kudos! And keep it up! Those who have bounced around a bit or joined later, stick with what you know, and your nation will thrive. With the conclusion of the 1919 update, however, this first period of the NES will come to an end. We'll wrap up some loose ends, build some more background stuff, and move on to the next thread, covering 1920 - 1939.

First and Foremost: Continue on with 1919 orders as you were. None of this will be further developed until after the update, and I solely am posting this so that you may begin thought upon your nation now.

A List of What Will and Won't Change

1. The majority of stats and rules will not change, so don't be alarmed about that, your EP will remain as it is overall, though some nations may have increases/decreases in their various overseas colonies. Also, I will be taking the chance to clean up manpower stats, allowing for immigration, and this timeline's changed demographics. I have been listening to ya'll, believe it or not, and I do truly believe we could use some cleaning of the global manpower.

2. We will convert to a version of the map crezth presented not long ago. I will alter a few things, adding national borders, and editting a few shifts, not to mention updating the map since crezth did it in 1915. This mostly due to the fact that I still hate elements of the current map and it can really do with an update.

3. SRPs will start taking up a major role in the NES. As I discussed a few turns back when we dumped technology tree, this shift was planned from the beginning. That is why we've only had 2 SRPs so far (shame the more interesting one was rejected) and this will change with the next period.

4. There will be some changes/additions to the various Doctrine and unit stats. This will be done to encourage further modernization of your armies and the development of new tanks, planes, and ships. Overall, this is a party, that I hope everyone will be invited to.

5. None of the rules will change, but I will seek to make the first page ruleset more coherent and keeping any news rules that have been implemented since the NES began. This will include new pictures for the first post, and other things changed more pleasing to the eye. If you think of anything that NEEDS to be added or clarified on the first post, please share it with me in your 1919 orders, or even on the thread. I will make a note, and do my best to deal with any problems or inclarities.

6. A new background/history thread. The current one clearly isn't getting much use, and I hope that all of you have been as inspired as I by Lord Iggy's attempt to bring reason and realism to my history. I'm the first to admit that the scenario was designed as jsut that, a scenario, and Lord Iggy, Circuit, and others have done much to bring character to it. To this end, we will have a new background thread upon which, once more, we will include new flags, nation backgrounds, and stuff relating to the discussion of terminology and the history, like those I currently have listed on the front page. This will also include the list of my own recommended reading for NESes, like we already we have on this thread. I hope that by doing this, we can establish a more interesting backstory overall, and I will state, that the goal WON'T be to discuss the stuff currently going on, but rather making good sense of everything that happened BEFORE 1920.

Why a New Thread?

The first and most practical reason for a new thread is that we have already surpassed 4,000 posts on this one. As I plan to take this NES to at the very least, the year 2012, at the current rate, we will have beyond 24,000 posts on this thread if we stuck with it. Not only would this be rather daunting to new players, but I suspect that, unless things have changed, the fine folks of CFC would be most displeased (especially after they got all testy when I asked for more attachment space for my beloved maps :p ).

There is another important reason however, and this goes back to a quite good book on geopolitics called The Next 100 Years by George Friedman. The book itself has a different theme than this, but one of the statements that really floored me is this: "People and nations mistake passing clouds for something that will be with the world forever, while ignoring the creeping realities that slowly shift the world. One day, something like the jihadist war will seem like a permanent fact, and twenty years later, the world will have changed without anyone even really noticing it." Taking a look at the history of the twentieth century alone, and if you study the actual attitudes of the majority at any given time, you can see that this statement holds up very well. Therefore, I feel, that in an NES that provides a true insight into geopolitics, like that which I strive for, every twenty years, the world seems like a different place than it had been before. In keeping with this philosophy is the reason why the NES is changing threads. I encourage those who were here, think back to 1900, is the world now the way you thought it would be when the NES was new? Similarly, those of you who are with us in 1920, keep a memory of your thoughts now, as twenty updates from now, the world will be a different place.

Reasonable, EQ. Still will be around, even though my beloved United States is no longer around (the Second Union doesn't count, Azale). I will rise again, though! This I swear!

In terms of background, rather than a thread, perhaps we should revisit the idea of a wiki? That was used in one of your earlier NESing attempts, and is still in use by N3S to good effect. I know that I could probably write a lot of articles for North America and a lot of the characters there (President Scott, President Wareing, even Negro Proletarist Frederick Douglass). It would also be easier to keep maintained than a constant series of background threads, and would likely be easier to read.

Also would be a great place to keep a compendium of the stories posted here.

@Pallen: Just write up some orders for Venezuela and send them to EQ in a PM

In regards to a wiki, I've never had anything against wikiness, but since we could still have anywehere from 80 to 180+ years to cover, I could see why that may be a good idea. I'd like to hear opinions from the masses on this matter, as while I could add a good deal of stuff now, I couldn't promise to keep a wiki updated by myself in the future, hence why I was thinking of keeping it on these forums. If allya'll think that a wiki could be both/useful and, most importantly, player maintained, I'll consider setting one up, as I have time these days to do so.

@Pallen: Well, after recommendations, I don't add anyone to the front page list until they've
actually sent in orders for an update.

Yeah, I would be for such a thing. It'd make looking back at updates much easier. As for the player maintenance, I'm less sure about that, at least for myself. IRL is busy and will get busier as the semester goes on (if I'm not careful about being proactive).

To Pontus
From Kurdistan

I have tried to reasonably negotiate with the aggressors, but they have decided to be uncompromising in this matter.

To Russia
From Kurdistan

Would you mind assisting me and help fix this mishap with Turkey?

To Rome
From Kurdistan

One of the records keepers in my palace seems to have lost the agreement signed between Russia, you, and my father for the Harpoon-class submarine design, among other things. Would you mind re-sending it to us?

OOC: okay, this war is getting to be ******** beyond comprehension.

:bump:
Also, i like the idea of a Wiki for this game.
