THE ROMAN EMPIRE

National Background

Imperator Constantine XIX struggled through most of his reign to preserve his rule, even doing his best to temporarily align himself with reformists which led to the outbreak of a civil war in the early parts of the nineteenth century. The resulting victory in the civil war led to a path of recovery for the once ailing Roman Empire, as Constantinople's authority was restored and reclaimed. A victory in a war against the old Turkish enemy further cemented this position among nations, followed with a period of economic growth. In 1862, the final steps would be taken to restore Roman power, as the Roman Empire joined in the Spanish offensives against the Mamluke Caliphate. The invasion of Cyprus proved successful and other Roman soldiers helped in Spanish battles from Jerusalem to Baghdad. This victory ultimately led to restored faith in the Roman Empire, as they recovered from decades of decline. Throughout the remainder of Constantine XIX's reign until his death in 1866, he proved a able leader, retaining good relationships throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The new Imperator John XII proved less administratively capable, and the 1870s and 1880s saw Rome incapable of keeping up with the innovation of Western Europe. Ultimately they were forced to find new economic ties in Scandinavia and Russia, which have further expanded their capabilities and influence. In 1900, the Roman Empire is closely tied to both of those other empires, relying heavily upon their commerce and trade to prop up their fragile economy.

The early years of the 1900s did not prove very fruitful for the Roman Empire. While they were a rising power in Eastern Europe, by 1920 the Empire was just a shadow of its former self. The first few years of the 1900s looked to be going in Rome's way, as they were gaining influence in their former territories and aiding allies, until 1903 when an explosion, now known as the Constantinople Event, leveled the Empire's ancient capital city, effectively destroying the government in the process. General Panagiotis stepped up to lead the nation, even when other Roman Legion generals decided to carve out their own countries from the remains of the Empire. Bulgaria was the first to break away, followed by rebellions in the eastern provinces, which gave birth to the Pontic Republic. However, with the recent reconstruction of Constantinople and the rebuilding of the Opsikion territory, some believe the Empire has finally put behind itself the tragedies of that fateful day in 1903 and can rise once again.

The invasion of Ireland failed because of a sea-battle,

lurker's comment: No, the invasion of Ireland failed because it was operationally and strategically unsound. Even if you won the battle at sea, the invasion would still have been a colossal investment for marginal gain at best. Ireland in totum probably consists of 12-15% of Britain's industrial capacity at most, and despite unrest, there was little to no incentive for any rats to join with the invaders.

Well, a quick update on my progress:

I've been working steadily, if erratically, to complete the stuff for the switchover. As anticipated, the new thread should be up and running next week, with everything implemented. I've been temporarily and occasionally sidetracked by XCOM, and by that I mean, all of Tuesday I was playing it (Game of the Year, in my opinion). Despite this, I have actually been working on getting things together, and here's what I could use from ya'll at this point:

1. I will still accept nation backgrounds and also I welcome attempts at similar backgrounds for NPC nations. As always, I reserve the right to edit for space or clarity.

2. I desperately need people to go through the opening posts of this thread and look for the following:
a. Typographical errors.
b. Contradictions.
c. Obsolete rules and information.

Now, what I DO NOT need is orders. I am still automatically deleting any orders sent in at this point. Orders will only be accepted with the new thread's posting.

If you want to do backgrounds (or flags for that matter) for an NPC nation, I encourage anyone to post, and hell, you can even do one that someone else has already done, and I'll pick the better of the two.

Quite possibly, although I don't think that that can be said for certain because it never happened. It wasn't a colossal investment anyway, though; we sent very few troops in the grand scheme of things, and their annihilation wasn't really all that much of a disaster, either in itself, or compared to the catastrophic (and, I maintain, slightly supernatural) loss of ships in the sea battle. Part of the point was to force a sea battle anyway, in which the invasion of Ireland even kind of succeeded.

If you didn't invest a whole bunch that kind of reinforces my point. :dunno: In general it was an unsound plan.

Just got back today after a long period of illness over the past week or so, what did I miss during that time?

Not a whole lot, I think. Just filling in backgrounds for nations. You should do Portugal. Make sure to check the update and Brazilian background for a little history, I would say.

I could do the background of Ecuador.

Yep, doing Portugal at the moment, trying to get into contact with Blue Bacon so I can complete a trade deal with him at the moment.

Alright, I've proofread the front page. Here are the parts that I can see that may need editing:

Spoiler :
The introduction evidently needs bringing up to 1920;

In Manpower and your population, you have twice misspelt the noun "defence" as "defense".

In the economy section, the bit about recession and national bankruptcy seems to me to have far too much space, and as far as I know it's never actually happened to any nation; perhaps it would be best omitted entirely?

The second "education and technology" paragraph needs rewriting;

This is now pretty much irrelevant, or should be rewritten to take account of the hidden nature of techs: "In addition to the levels of Army Organization, which help differentiate militarily, the nation which leads the way in technology will also take great leaps forward in economic and military quality stats (depending on the invention). Meanwhile, those not in the technological lead will progress in quality stats at a much slower rate. Therefore, even though you don't have to pave the way in technologies, it certainly won't hurt if you do."

"Army Doctrine is a distant cousin of Army Organization from the last NES." ---> needs to be changed to "from CIEN" or something;

"Ideally, a army will attempt to modernize its organization and doctrines once every ten to twenty years." ---> typo; you should have put "an army"

Under "Stories, Tales and Culture", you have misspelt "titbits" as "tidbits";

"The unit prices for generic types of units will be altered depending on what doctrine you have, vastly effecting the style of army that you can produce." ---> the verb "affect" is spelt with an "a".

The rule about converting conscripts to regulars for the difference in cost according to the doctrine of the nation in question needs to be included in the second post;

You have put two colons after "Training" (a typo);

The 1890 Confederate, Scandinavian and Polish doctrines are no longer used by any nation in the world (although all other doctrines are still used);

The Legion Hispania, the Kagemusha, the Emperor's Hand, the Andean Rangers, and the Praetorian Guard have all been replaced by newer elite troop types.

"They are still invaluable for their purposes, fortunately, you can always have more than one type of tank." ---> the first comma should be replaced by a semicolon or by "and";

"The armored defense of a battleship" ---> you have misspelt "defence" as "defense" again;

"Creating a ornate technological tree" ---> you mean "an" ornate technological tree;

If you didn't invest a whole bunch that kind of reinforces my point. :dunno: In general it was an unsound plan.

As I recall the point wasn't to be successful in Ireland, but as Spryllino pointed out, to force a sea battle that was pitched in our favor. I'm fuzzy on the logic that was behind it, but it amounted to something to the effect of hoping we could fool allied naval commanders into splitting their forces by trying to cut off reinforcements and supplies to the Irish invasion force. Which was optimistic at the time, and even more so in hindsight, but not nearly as surprising as the absolute annihilation of the Continental armada.

I am still of the opinion that the confrontation at sea in Europe would have gone better had Spain been more willing to effectively commit its navy against Britain in Europe, instead of against Britain in east Asia.

Spoiler :
Defence can be spelled either way. AmEn defense vs. BrEn defence.

I don't know about titbit vs. tidbit, but from what I've seen, the AmEn preferred version is tidbit.

The 20th Century was not kind to the United States of New Spain. The nation entered the 20th Century in poor shape, having suffered from the war against the American occupation and only gaining independence a mere 14 years before. The Rivera Scheme, the sole source of income for much of the country, was soon made redundant by the construction of the Panama Canal in 1903. Many in New Spain hoped that the country would be the site of a Nicaragua canal, constructed by the British and Brazilians in opposition to the Americans. However, the joining of America against Brazil and Britain during the Great War sealed this as impossible, and New Spain began to languish economically.

With strikes, proletarist revolts and crime becoming rampant, and the country firmly in the grip of a deep economic malaise, many in the country began considering secession. The two states of Honduras and Costa Rica blamed the central government for the issues, particularly the old centralisation of power under Carlos Rivera, the nations first President, in the 1840ies. The states demanded more and more power to state legislatures, the resignation of the current Conservative government, and immediate new elections. The central government refused, and the states called up their militias. With the Federal government's ultimatum expired, Costa Rica and Honduras declared their secession from the United States of New Spain in early 1912. The War of Secession had begun.

The Federals launched an assault on the rebellious provinces, however, they were unable to make much headway due to frequent defections from their own soldiers. With New Spain desperate to end the war, the federal government launched a major offensive into Costa Rica, the weaker of the two. However, this allowed the Hondurans to make their own offensive, which seized Managua in a brutal battle. With Managua lost, the Federals signed peace with the secessionists. The United States of New Spain now only consisted of the states of Nicaragua and Mosquito, which had decided to stay with the Federals. However, the New Spanish government was unable to survive without its provinces, and was swiftly dismantled, with the provincial legislature of Nicaragua taking over and formally annexing Mosquito.

The government of Nicaragua then began looking for people to blame. Its eyes turned to the military, who were deemed to blame for the economic collapse and the failure of the War of Secession. The central government instituted a purge of the military, weeding 'disloyal' members of the armed forces out. However, this only infuriated the already angry military. In 1915, the military launched a coup against the central government, led by General Manuel Cavrera. General Cavrera declared himself Presidente in the Current State of National Emergency, and reconstituted the United States of New Spain, along with the old flag. Now, Cavrera and his military allies seek to reunite New Spain once more, against the protests of his foes in Honduras and Costa Rica.

Honduras was born out of the collapse of the United States of New Spain in 1913, and the subsequent war of Secession. Honduras had long felt left out of the New Spanish union, with most governors and presidents coming from Costa Rica and Nicaragua. With the economic crisis showing no sign of letting up, Honduras and Costa Rica demanded greater powers for the States and the resignation of the current central government. When the Federals refused, Honduras and Costa Rica declared their secession.

The Federals were unable to defeat the Hondurans and Costa Ricans, and signed peace when Honduran soldiers broke into the capital of Managua. Honduras and Costa Rica demanded full independence, and that the Federals step down and dissolve New Spain.

With the United States destroyed, Honduras has enjoyed prosperity since its formal independence in 1913. With new ties to brazil, it has enjoyed a large airforce for a small Central American nation and looks ready to halt against any attack from the reconstituted New Spanish remnant to the south.
