Cats and Kittens

They are so cute sleeping together.

Its Springtime again, and that means our neighbor's cat Rollo starts showing up again:

Here he is enjoying my chair, with our cat Mu behind him:

And here is Mu and Rollo watching me clean my yard:

I've learned that Rollo is a real con artist: he goes around to all the neighborhood houses and meows this sad story about what a poor starving kitty he is, and of course all the neighbors believe him and let him in and feed him. Then he asks to be let out, and he proceeds to the next house and repeats the process. I'd like to think he spends the most time at our house, but from what the neighbors say I'm not so sure....

Dexter has been getting mooches from the next door neighbors. Apparently he has curled up on his bed

Hypoallergenic cats made with CRIPR

The two genes for the protein mainly responsible for allergic reactions to cats have been deleted from cat cells using CRISPR gene editing. It is a first step towards creating hypoallergenic cats, says US-based company InBio.

Around 15 per cent of people have allergic reactions to cats. The main cause of this is a small protein called Fel d 1 that is secreted by salivary and skin glands. It is spread over cats’ fur when felines clean themselves and can become airborne as the fur dries. What, if anything, Fel d 1 does for cats is not known.

The team deleted either the CH1 or the CH2 gene from cat cells growing in culture using the CRISPR genome editing technique. The next step will be to delete all copies of the two genes at once, and to confirm that this prevents cells making the Fel d 1 protein. Only then the team will try to create cats that lack the genes.

:shake:

And of course such cats will be super-expensive and breeding programs will be created for them, and who knows what would happen to the offspring if they get abandoned or run away and mate with normal cats...

I say this as someone who has trouble tolerating medium-haired cats and I cannot tolerate long-haired cats. DSH (domestic short-haired) are fine.

Besides... if Maddy's previous owner hadn't turned out to be allergic to cats, he never would have offered her on Freecycle, and I would have missed out on over 14 years of having her as part of my family.

I am not sure there would be much problem with these cats breeding with others, but there are a whole host of ethical and medical issues with the whole field. You know something similar has been done, and widely condemned, in humans?

I'd vaguely heard of that.

My first thought when you said something similar had been done in humans?

"Hypoallergenic humans?"

Satan's cat Boots, who's ripped my hand open on more than one occasion, strolled over and rubbed against my leg,. What was that all about? :dubious:

By rubbing against you cats are marking you as part of their territory. When a house (territory) has multiple cats around they all will mark spots. Getting used to other cats' marking is part of how they acclimate to one another. If you brush multiple cats with the same stiff brush, they get used to the scents of the other cats and will be less aggressive towards each other.

Think of his rubbing against you as sending you a valentine .

I picked up a cat at the SPCA. He put his paws on my shoulders and nuzzled my face.

That was 11 years ago still have him;).

I've never heard any of my four cats purr.
How is that possible? I realize that not all cats purr, but to have four at once?

Have you felt them, to tell if there's at least some sort of vibration going on? Some cats have really quiet purrs.
