Maddy did a Good Thing last night:
She caught a fly.
Why is that a Good Thing?
Well, for several hours I kept hearing a weird noise in the room where I have my computer and couldn't figure out what it was. Then I noticed a fly buzzing around the ceiling and then had to figure out how it got in.
Oh, right. The housekeeping helper was over on Friday and we stashed several large plastic bins on the balcony. The fly must have sneaked in at that time.
Anyway, it evidently flew low enough for Maddy to swat it. Then she pounced on it, took it in her mouth (I was hoping she'd just eat it, but I guess she's accustomed to her food just lying still on her plate), and let it go.
The fly was still alive, but stunned and trying to crawl on the floor.
So I picked up a paper towel, killed it, and put it in the garbage.
I know some of you are overly nice to pests like insects and rodents, but the fact is that insects are not allowed indoors here. And the sound was driving me nuts, so Maddy did a Good Thing. It's a relief to know she has
some predatory instincts that go beyond playing with toys. Usually when she finds a live insect, she just wants to play with it.
What a good girl!
