Check Your Privilege

As long as you're on the subject.. the confusion of a former woman being born into a man's body.

I genuinely don't understand this as it doesn't appear to be a complete sentence, but is this an appeal to past lives or something?

I qualify for 3-4 out 5, im pretty sure i can talk about it, given my experiences.

Nope, only your own experiences and why'd you take anything to do with class? Is that so you can still feel oppressed and a victim even though you're middle class.

Since you seem to know so much about me, im sure you can go ahead and tell everyone here about my life growing up, my childhood, etc, everything about me right, Ryika?

You've just implied you can do the same with your little list.

Also you're not non-binary, that's just you adopting it so you can attack and mock cheezy and given it's you, i am not really willing to extend the benefit of the doubt.

He has an anime girl name and avatar of harley quinn, he ain't screaming masculinity here (I'm not trying to offend the guy I'm just saying). You just don't think he's on "your side" so the whole respecting peoples claimed identities flies right out the window.

Lot of assumptions there Oruc, im from a working class family, a family who has only recently had a generation that have been anything other than fishers, so don't presume to lecture me on how "middle-class" i am.

Surely your own personal background and circumstances have absolutely no bearing when calculating your privilege points though? After all, they never do for other people.

I wasn't born into a wealthy family, i was born into a family which had to make ends meet, frequently, so frequently infact that there were multiple times we were at the verge of being made homeless. I didn't go to a prestigious highschool, i don't have any sort of connections that would help me even get into a job. In that regard (purely from a financial perspective) i was not and am not, priviledged.

But that won't stop you from immediately categorising any white, straight males you happen to meet as privileged, without even stopping to ask their personal backgrounds, will it?

I'm still priviledged, despite my financial situation, as a white male, just because someone is disadvantaged in one field, doesn't mean they don't have priviledge, that's just absurd.

The more we talk about it the more it really does seem like the whole theory behind "check your privilege" is basically "walk a mile in somebody else's shoes" but all, I dunno, adversarial rather than communal. I think that's mostly the point of the phrasing. It's harder to ignore the dorks being "mean" with their words than the nice old churchies. I mean, they're yesterday's people and boring.

Do you consider yourself to be more privileged than a rich, white woman?

I'd be interested to hear Cheezy or Useless give their take on this.

No matter how you phrase it, asking someone to confront their own priviledge, is always going to be adversarial, i can certainly understand why some dislike the way it's asked, but it's essentially a request for some introspection.

"Try walking a mile in somebody else's shoes," on the surface and at its core, is not an adversarial thought. Even if it's actually the same introspective and empathic thought. Phrasing matters, doesn't it?

"Son, we can have candy later. Please put that brownie down for now."
"Son, put the brownie down right now or we'll have no treats for the rest of the day."

Those two things do not get the same reaction because, ultimately while the goal is the same, one operates through promises of generosity, the other is a threat. And that's just phrasing.

Which of the two counts more though?

Both, hence the reason for intersectionality. You can be financially disadvantaged but still enjoy the priviledges of being male, you can be rich and still be disadvantaged when it comes to gender issues.

It's not as pointed nor as potent either is it now? Also that phrase is still adversarial, even minorly so.

Flip a coin.

Cheezy made invocations and then departed. He'd have to change his mind to come back.

It's worse to impale things with? It has smaller teeth now?

I think it's probably more potent at getting attention. I think it very well might be less potent at getting people to think about the issue from a place of self awareness and compassion.

Also, I was super slow with my edit on the last post, sorry about that.
