The Beginning of the Assault on Naples

The morning of July 4th,in the peacful harbor of Naples.Sailors were cleaning the decks of the new ships recently added to the fleet.The men of the Army were as of today off duty for a few days to see there families in Naples and surrounding areas.One such off duty man,was an officer. 2nd Lieutenant of the Italian 3rd Infantry Division,Alfredo Cheesus.He was in his water front home and was over looking the harbor with the fleet docked.He was minding his business reading a morning paper he had just recieved and drinking some wine.Then he heard a cry out in the harbor and a loud ringing of bells on the ships.A runner came down the docks immediatly and said he thinks we are being attacked.Alfredo had heard rumors that the borders had been breeched and hadn't taken it seriously as at that time nothing was for sure.Messages took time to get places in these days.But the young runner ran over to Alfredo and told him a message he had to repeat.

Navy Messenger: Sir,we beleive we are under attack.

Alfredo: By who boy..

Just as he said these words the sound of cannon fire echoed and a large splash hit a few feet off the shore in the water.Splashing water near Alfredo and the young messenger.

Alfredo: Why I think your right.We best do something.Quickly pass this message on to every officer you can. "Rendevu at town square,bring all the men you can find and arm them from the armory."

The boy nods and runs off to do his duty.The ships out in the harbor are engaged in combat now.With the outnumbered enemies being destroyed,it seems victory is at hand.But then the sound of ground artilery is heard.And a cannon ball lands into a house not far down the street.Alfredo runs back into his house and grabs his uniform,sword and pistol with a reloading bag.He runs down the cobblestone street to see a broken wall on the side of a house.And out in the distance on the outskirts of the town he see's the familar shapes of men with cannons.Another volly of shots echo and a second later he sees it,a cannonball heading right for him.He moves as quickly as he can and it misses him by a few feet.Tearing through a market carriage.

As he is staggered by this near death experience and slowly stands up brushing dust off his uniform and picking up his hat.Another officer of much lower rank comes to him with a couple dozen armed men.

Other Officer: Sir,the Lombardians are attacking.They are waiting outside the city,we think we can hold them off.We only have a few hundred men so far but we are getting more and more as we find them.

Alfredo: Good,good.Defend the city until further orders.I want all streets gaurded.I want a main force outside the city in line formation within 5 minutes ago.And for God's sake find me some cannons.

Other Officer: Yes sir.

The men all walk off as Alfredo is left behind.He turns to the harbor to see several burning/sinking ships.But all the remaining ships have the Italian Republic flag waving high.The battle for the harbor is won,but the battle for the city has just begun.​
