Civ Suggestion: Polynesia

The reason why Polynesia didn't go any west further than Fiji, because there's Melanesia there. Unlike Micronesia or Polynesia, Melanesia were more like barbarians imo. I hope we can utilize this fact to block Polynesia to ever reach Australia / Indonesia.

I'm planning to propose some jungles in Melanesia, so if the UP is changed and we use Island Hopping-like method like Merijn proposed, they won't be able to reach Australia.

Here is a suggestion for the flagdecal.
It's based on the civ5 decal for Polynesia. (I prefer that one above the one used in HR)
Leoreth mentioned somewhere in this thread he associates Polynesia with pink, so that explanes the color.
I took the old pink color of China and lightened it a bit. The secondary is the light yellow used by the Zulu's in vanilla BTS.

I'd use an even lighter pink, but it looks very good already.

Out of curiosity, what unique attributes does Polynesia have in Civ5?

Thanks.

If Polynesia is ever to be included, I have an idea for how the Moai Statues might be implemented so it would only be possible to build as Polynesia. They would be a wonder, requiring Sailing, Pantheon and, this is the main thing, only one city on the continent. This would require it to be built on an island. To ensure that no other nations could build them, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Crete, Sardinia, the Azores and the British Isles would have to count as part of Europe or Asia. They might already, I'm not really sure. If this is possible to code, it would allow the technologically backwards Polynesians to build a wonder that otherwise would be built many turns earlier by the other Classical civs.

As for the wonder itself, I have a few possible ideas for the effect:
- +2/3 :hammers: for seafood resources
- Intercontinental trade (essentially the Portuguese UP, but no Optics requirement)
- No maintenance costs for distance to palace for all cities
- No maintenance costs for distance to palace for the wonder's city alone, +4 :hammers:, +8 :commerce:

The third is my favourite, but would require an expiration tech, probably Astronomy or Optics. So that it might actually be build, Easter Island should have stone and the Moai should have half production with stone.

It would be a lot simpler just to make it a UB.

But then you would have Moai Statues all over the place, which would be odd. Then again, you might be right simply because there isn't much else to make a UB.

You can make a UB a wonder. There's no problem at all.

That would be very unique, but also a bit of a bummer for Polynesia unless the Moai were particularly powerful.

As another option, the slightest amount of research has revealed a pretty good alternative for the UB: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marae

These existed pretty much across Polynesia in many different forms, from the Moai of Easter Island to the heiau of Hawaii. Unfortunately it would probably have to be a replacement for the Pagan Temple (since that's essentially what it was), which we already have so many of. Or perhaps an amphitheatre replacement would work? As for the bonus it gives, extra production in some form would be very useful.

This reminds me that UB (like Obelisk) that replaces Pagan Temples don't disappear if a religion spreads to the city. Is this intended??

Yes. (It's in the RFC-DoC concepts page in the Civilopedia)

It's funny how this thread goes in cycles.

i'd go with the maré over the moai statues as the ub. it makes more sense.
and one change i'd propose to the map: make it hanga roa, not rapa nui. rapa nui is the island and the people, hanga roa is the capital city. actually, all of the islands should have actual cities for city names, since it looks a lot more polished. i don't like how a lot of the cities in civ5's polynesia are just the names of islands.

-If Polynesian culture extends to the Americas, I could open borders with them as Aztecs and could potentially do a reverse discovery of the "Old World".
doesn't everybody else always discover the old world with the maya anyway?

and to be fair, nobody's going to read an entire 16 page thread. i just so happened to see post 241 when i was looking at every few pages.
