Civ3 1.29 beta 2

Brad, you are the best! You don't know how encouraging it is to have someone out there workign so hard to support us little ol' Mac gamers!

The bizarre solution that I came up with which (knock on wood) has been working for a few weeks now is to play Civ3 w/o the CD. Somehow, w/ the 1.29 patch, this is possible, and it solved my slowdown/freeze problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I haven't used the CD for about a year. The freezing seems to vary from game to game. I always play huge worlds and I suspect that may have something to do with it (since I've run out of other things to suspect).

See, I thought I'd discovered something new, but it turns out I was just being slow. Oh well.

Sorry I wasn;t of any help.

Looking good on OS9.1 here. No more memory problem. Love Fortify/Wake all it makes campaigns sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much easier.

The only issue I've noticed so far.... if you could even call it an issue its so small.......

1) Attack a coastal City owned by Civ A
2) Next to that City is a sea vessel (in this case a Frigate) from Civ B.
3) win the battle and move into the City.
4) during the dialog that asks if you want to capture or raze, your nearby units and the other civ's unit temporarily disappear from the screen. Once you go into the city screen or successfully raze, the units are displayed properly again.

VERY minor bug, and I only saw it once. Which means this must be a pretty solid build :) Yay!!!

As I posted in the Beta 1 thread, I am not able to open PC saves coming from the Demogame 3. Extension is right, but the game doesn't recognise the file as being openable. The system also doesn't recognise it as being a Civ 3 file, altough the .SAV file next to it is recognised as a C3 file.

I'd like to know why this happens and also if it can be corrected. I'm using MacOS X v.10.1.5.

Run it through Stuffit Expander. It may be encoded as MacBinary.

No, It was encoded as .zip and unzipped before use. I'm not that neophyte. But I did try to pass it again in stuffit and here's what it says: The file does not appear to be compressed or encoded.

Maybe it's related to the fact that the file was named .SA after the unzipping (the V probably went off because of Stuffit). I renamed it .SAV but it doesn't do anything.

But, by the way, thanks for your quick answer and your concern for the users of your *creations*.

Ah...that's a good clue. I think the filename may be too long. If it's longer than 31 characters including the extension, Civ3 won't be able to open it.

Na, that's not it. renamed the file "Ceasar, 310 BC.SAV", but C3 doesn't even consider it as a saved game.

I think it may be OS related, could be verified if someone tried with OS X.2.6.

Thanks Brad, works great so far.Any chance that there'll be an editor for os 9.2 if not never mind, I'm just glad someones bothered about us Mac gamers, great patch!.

Well theres your problem, you spelled Caesar wrong!

But seriously...
I don't think it would be 10.1, that's what I use and works fine for me. If you read the many other posts in this forum, you'll find many different possibilities (and no I don't believe you are a neophyte, but it is easy to overlook the obvious no matter what the experience)
1. What browser was the file downloaded with?
2. What icon does the file show?
3. Did you put the file in your saves folder in Civ3?
4. Did you use the 'open with application' feature of OS X to change it?
5. Are both your Civ3 and the file patched to 1.29?

Just some tips to think about

That's unlikely. I've loaded a number of saved games under 10.2.6.

Another poster gave a good hint: if you're using a saved game created in 1.29, it won't load in 1.21 or less. As for PTW saved games, those won't load on the Mac at all.

If you're still stumped, put the sav file up here for us to check. It may just be corrupt.

With Camino, already tried with mozilla, but I can try with IE if you think it can change someting.
2. What icon does the file show?

White, blank, non-identified document type of icon.
3. Did you put the file in your saves folder in Civ3?

Yea, also tried elsewhere.
4. Did you use the 'open with application' feature of OS X to change it?

Sure, always the first thing to do.
5. Are both your Civ3 and the file patched to 1.29?

Yes, the DG3 is in vanilla PC 1.29 and mine is in Mac 1.29ß2.

Look at my answers above, both 1.29, but the PC computer may have been infected by some mods or thingies, but the official result of the polls were no mods at all and vanilla 1.29.

I don't know if you still have OS 9 on your computer, but if you do boot into Classic and compare the creator and file codes of the PC save to that of a Mac save. Whenever I download a PC save I find that I *always* have the same problem you describe. Fixing the creator and file types should get Civ3 to recognize the file.

I took a brief look for the original demogame 3 saved game file and came up empty.

It would be very informative if you could provide a link to where you originally grabbed it, and perhaps put up your saved game as well so we can take a look. Otherwise we'll probably just continue to flail around. If you would rather e-mail the files to me, you can send them to bradman@pobox.com and I'll take a look.

Are there any extra mods or files (similar ot the GOTM add-ons) necessary to use the demogame 3 stuff?

And how I am supposed to "fix" them?

I think I see the problem. You can fix them by holding down the Command key when you launch Civ3. In the resulting dialog, uncheck the box marked "Use MacOS file dialogs". When you do that, Civ3 will use its own file picker, and that will see the files regardless of the file type assigned to it.

I tried both your .sav game and the original and both loaded fine for me using this method.

Ahh! I'm sorry, I forget to mention Resedit in my previous post. Basically, launch Resedit in OS 9 and from Resedit do a 'Get File/Folder Info' on your PC file and a Mac file. Then you can edit the PC file and creator types to match the Mac's.

I'm going to fix this once and for all in the next patch build. In the future, the Mac dialogs will accept either the proper filetype/creator code or the .sav extension.

Hello Brad,

Do you think you will be able to do something to fix the issue with keyboards shortcut when using non-US keyboards layout?

To be more specific, I am using a French keyboard and have:

- to type a "z", instead of a "w" to get a "wait" command;
- to type a "w" instead of a "z" for the "zoom" command;
- same effect with the "a" and the "q"...

On the other hand, and that's the strange part, the "m" is still working as a "m" ("mine" command), even though it's not located on the same position on the French and US keyboards.

But the <shift><command><m> (to hide units, cities and improvements on the map) is not working at all with the French keyboard layout: I have to switch to a US one to make it work... which is kind of really annoying

All of this was working good on 1.21... so I guess it should be possible to fix it somehow.:)

Best regards,

Tnerual
