Civ3 1.29 beta 2

Naboo, as far as I know, you can build a FP in any city, so something is off with your game, apart from the graphics. Why don't you send a copy to Brad?

With regard to 1.29 tech pace, it never speeds up... but the slower it goes for the human, the faster the AI looks in relation. Keep in mind that on emperor and deity, it will always seem "fastest" at the start, because the AI's extra units have a much larger proportional impact.

Naboo,

The problem in you game is not a bug in the software but an impact on game play that is designed to prevent a previous exploit where players whould set virtually every city to build the FP or wonders in order to park many pre-builds all at one time.

In v1.29 you cannot assoign more that one city to build any Great or Small Wonder at any time.

Because you already have teh FP assigned to be built in the city of Buffalo you cannot begin to build the FP in any other city. If you reassign Buffalo to build the Palce to store shields for a prebuild of the next available wonder then you will be able to assign Zimbabwe to build the FP but if you look closely you will see that Zimbabwe will now be blocked from building the Palace.

This is not a software problem or bug.

I could have sworn I tried it that way; I know about the duplication prohibition. Just tried it again, and could get it an Zimbabwe, but the problem still seems to be there.

-set buffalo to cathedral
-FP available in Zimbabwe
-FP NOT available in Mpondo....?

I'll have to tinker with it some more. Right now, there's an eclipse to check out :)

I'm not exactly a regular poster at these forums, but I couldn't resist downloading and installing this patch early. ;)

I played just fine with a new game started after the new patch was installed. I managed to get to around 580 AD (in two sessions) before it crashed.

I've uploaded both the crash log and the auto-save file temporarily for access, if you need them. I don't think I was doing anything strange or unusual when the application crashed. It was at the end of the turn that everything went FUBAR.

I sincerely appreciate your efforts, Brad. Thanks for keeping the flame burning for us! :)

From Naboo:

2 - Playing as America and have conquered Zulu. I find that I can't build my Forbidden Palace in Zimbabwe - apparently because it was once the enemy's capital? I'm not sure if that's anything new; I usually build it in one of my own cities. Also can't get it in Mpondo, which was also one of their capitals. There are still other former Zulu cities which were ALSO capitals where I CAN build the FP. Yes they went through a lot of capitals Again, not sure if this has been the case all along or not. But it does seem odd and is somewhat limiting. Maybe I'm missing something? I put the save file here

Did you rush something, or add shields by chopping a forest? That would prevent you from switching to a wonder, Palace or FP.

After a week, playing late nights after a long days work :crazyeye:, I'm now up to 1820 AD (playing as the Germans) and no crashes :) :)
I also got 2 Great Leaders so far, and as a result got to have my very own Leipzig Fusiliers unit, and King's Guard cavalry unit :king:

I sure am glad we're finally getting this patch; my favorite way to play Civ is on a world map with the proper starting points, and that was impossible with 1.21.

Anyway, I'm playing a game on Kal El's 140x140 Earth map with the beta patch, and I noticed that some civs don't show up on the Foreign Advisor screen at all, even though I contacted them long ago and they appear on all of the other relevant screens (military advisor, histograph, etc).

In these screenshots, Rome, France, and India aren't on the Foreign Advisor screen even though I have contact with them. I believe I first contacted all three of those civs directly, as well, not by trading communications with the AI.

I'm not sure whether or not this is actually a problem with the patch (or possibly with my setup or the map; it's the first time I've played that map).

So has anyone else had issues of this sort, or is there something obvious I'm forgetting or doing wrong?

A save file is here.

Not a bug. You can select which Civ is displayed in that screen.

Maybe I'm being dense, but I don't see any such feature on the screen or any mention of it in the manual.
And, if it does only show certain civs, shouldn't it by default show every civ I have contact with, instead of two unknown ones?

Iconoclast -- if you hit Ctrl-C -- or something like that -- the other civs appear. I have never done it, but the other guys have posted in various forums about it.

Someone, please put in the correct keys here.

Just so it's clear -- this isn't a bug from the patch, it's a "feature" of the game. From what I've read, the decision to go beyond 8 players was made late in the development process. Also, you can imagine the foreign advisor screen would be pretty whacked if it tried to show all 16 players with the intersecting lines for peace/war/alliances/mp/rop! Could be done with much smaller leaderheads, probably. I would agree that, intuitively, the AIs should show up in the order of contact and that once one gets booted from the game, one of the "lurkers" would come to the main table. Unfortunately, it looks like they're pre-assigned slots.

The function-key solution addresses how to contact a civ not on the screen, when the starting number of civs is more than eight. As Naboo points out, there's not enough room for more heads. But Iconoclast seemingly has a different problem, because he has a couple of blank heads available to be filled in, and they haven't been.

Here is one for you all...

I downloaded the v1.29 beta 1 and successfully played and completed Gotm19, but after that all I could play were saved games. (I have OSX)

I repeatedly over the last few days could not start a new game, nor even the tutorial.

I just downloaded and installed the beta 2 and voila! Civ III is back and running as it should.

So... what happened here or is it a happy coincidence?

It is a moot point, since you should never use beta 1 again. ;)

No one has! Ctrl-C doesn't work here. Anyone know the right keys? Please?

Edit: Doh! I've been looking everywhere in the general forums, and finally found it on the first page of the Mac FAQ.:wallbash: Ctrl-Shift-Click on a Leader to change who appears there.

Maybe when the server gets updated real soon now we'll get a site search facility? :santa:

Compared to the PC 1.29f patch, most likely. They did fix this bug in PTW though.

Since you've fixed one bug that the PC version didn't fix until PTW, could you grab other bugfixes from the PTW source? I heard that there was a source drop made, even if PTW might not be published. There is a silly bug when you get the free tech at the start of an age and you have earlier recieved free techs from the Great Library that I know was fixed in PTW but I just saw in 1.29b2 (which otherwise works fine).

Once upon a time, long, long ago, I reported a freeze bug on my dual 800 where a unit would freeze for one minute right in the middle of movement. It went away after 1.21 came out. It's BAAAAACK - and it's TWO minutes with beta 2. Very annoying

I started up another game after the one where I got hit with half a dozen freezes and played it quite a bit longer with no problems at all. Now I'm not annoyed, just confused. :crazyeye:

Is ANYBODY else seeing anything like this?

gfeier,

i don't know if it's the same problem you're having, but I was having BIG freezes/general slowdown which would suddenly hit me with the 1.29 patch.

It seemed (though this could've been me desperately searching fro some logic/reproducibility) to have something to do with the CD or my HD spinning down -- I could hear changes in the whirring sound from my Cube.

The bizarre solution that I came up with which (knock on wood) has been working for a few weeks now is to play Civ3 w/o the CD. Somehow, w/ the 1.29 patch, this is possible, and it solved my slowdown/freeze problem.

Hope this helps.
