Civ3 1.29 beta 2

Hmmm. You load that .SAV and crash when you move one of the units. I can load the same file and move all the remaining units and play additional turns without problems. So there's got to be some difference between your Civ3 installation/environment and mine.

Did you throw away your Civ3 preferences when you reinstalled it? They are in a file called CivIII Preferences in your Home folder/Library/Preferences. That's about the only thing I can think of that's left to suggest.

Hi guys, I can't get 1.29b2 to install for the Mac at all. I'm running 1.21 on a 867 MHz powerbook with 256 MB of memory. My OS is 10.2.5.
I can download the compressed file, unstuff it, and I get the installer application icon and all, and the readme. When I double-click the installer it opens up, says 'preparing to install' for a couple of seconds, then a preogress bar appears, fillls up, and disappears too fast to see properly. I'm told installation is finished, but everything is the same as before.
Is there somewhere the installer needs to be to work properly? I've tried it in my 'downloads' folder, in my 'Civ 3' folder where the game application lives, and in my 'games' folder, where the 'civ 3' folder lives. Am i missing something?

I'd really like to get this to work - 'fortify all' and 'wake all' sound like real time-savers.

Thanks in advance for any help ...

How do you know it hasn't worked? Note that the Fortify all and Wake all menu options only show up if there is more than one unit to wake or fortify (not very clever IMHO). What version number comes up in the bottom left corner of the screen when you launch Civ3?

One trick you can try is to make a second copy of your Civ3 folder on your hard drive somewhere. When the updater starts up it looks around your hard drive and finds all the copies you have. If there is more than one it should ask you which one to update. Try this, select the one to update, commit and then launch that one to see if it has changed the version number.

It still comes up as 1.21 - that's why I'm presuming it hasn't worked :(

I had a backup copy under another name. I just moved it and renamed it 'Civilization III' again, and the installer behaved just like before. No menu asking which copy to update. So I'm guessing the installer isn't working on my machine. I've downloaded it a few times at this stage, but I'm close to giving up. I'll just have to keep my troops on the move all the time...;)

Brand new user (still in my 1st game) and probably saying old things...
I'm using an iBook 900, 10.2.6, 1.29b2.
Never experienced crashes but, as one of you posted early in this thread, my 1st Great Leader production simply ignored my OK on the unit's name and now I've (surely more appropriate)... Napoleon!
Besides (but I don't know if this is a bug or I'm just post in the wrong thread...) after getting Espionnage and the Agency, still I don't see were is the button/command to Plant a Spy (shouldn't it be in the Info Box, as per manual?)

As a final personal remark: this game is too cool!
I always somewhat hated computer games but now I've been spending all the last two weeks' nights playing and I'm now unable to stay awake at work!
Let's hope I'll become (very) slightly less fanatic starting from game no.2 !!

Startaff,

to plant a spy, click on the pentagon symbol beside the city name of the city that built the pentagon (in the normal, map screen).

... and Startaff, get used to being addicted. You have two choices before you: continue to enjoy Civ3 and its many offerings; put it in your Trash and empty it right now so you can go off and find a solution to world poverty, or a silver bullet to cure HIV/AIDS.

Personally, I failed the test. Now, I can only solve major international problems in my spare time. I tell myself that Civ3 is 'training' me for a call later on.

Edit; scratch some of what I had to say about others. Just went through the GOTM thread about what other Civ players do for a living and there are numerous software engineers, real-world engineers and a few biologists working on cures for cancer. I am humbled. We are in good company -- maybe one of us will find the Theory of Everything ...

Well, yeah, but we're only trying to cure cancer in our spare (non-Civ) time.

My god! I joined a company of zombies!

Haven't been here in a while, but had serious brain burn in my real life and needed a Civ3 escape. 1.29 has worked fairly smoothly, except:
1) Quartz seems to be on but it's not checked.
2) Lost the optimal screen displays for 17" iMacs. It's all tucked toward the left with a black band to the right. That makes scrolling a unique experience as well.
3) Fairly smooth and stable, then it crashes on some sort of automove (or maybe it was AI? It all happened so fast, officer!)

...And if I'd looked a little more carefully, "not checked" would make much more sense. There is definitely no check mark in the box: meaning that quartz is active. Check the box, that turns off quartz. Sorry to have wasted your time on that one.

However, I did get another crash this morning. Both times the game crashed, my treasury was pushing high limits ($9,000 or so). Probably no connection whatsoever, but it's something I noticed.

Here's this mornings crash, which had different behavior from last nights (an "Unexpectedly Quit" message instead of the other "invalid file" messages):

ejday, from the above I gather that you run the crashlog via the utility program, 'Terminal' in OS X. Would you mind listing the commands that you input to get the output?

I wish I could say I was terminal saavy, but I'm closer to a terminal case. In this case, there's really nothing to it. You don't have to go to the terminal, it will come to you...

Go into your users folder/home/library/Logs/CrashReporter and you'll see a list of crash logs. In there, I found Civilization III.crash.log. Double click on it, it'll open terminal, then I did a copy/paste. I'm sure there's a more sophisticated (perhaps safer and more intelligent) method, but I'm more an end-user kind of guy.

Okay, last night, after the first crash, I tried reloading the autosaves to no avail. After quitting, though, and coming back in fresh, it would load fine. Can djou essplain dis to me?

About the monitors: I was trying to get it to run in 1280x1024, which is offered in the monitor selection, top half. When I select it, I get an error: "DrawSprocket can not switch to the requested resolution (1280x1024, 16 bit, 1 something or other)," then it makes a rude comment about my mother and quits. Am I missing some caveat mentioned in an earlier post or is this just a shade of the beta blues?

Something else a little weird: in the Saves folder, all the save icons come up as the little rosetta stone and tag as "Civ III data." The autosaves look like normal map icons and comes up as a normal "Civ III saved game." In the Auto folder, it also generated a "save.tmp" (as Civ III data), and it weighed in at 0 KB. Never seen that before.
...Speaking of memory, those unusual saves would load fine, and weighed in much lighter than the autosaves. To wit:
Lincoln, 1850 AD.SAV (data) @ 196 KB
~versus~
Civ3 Autosave 1850 AD.SAV @ 1.5 MB

Factoid: Brad, I killed my old civ folders and started fresh to commemorate your 1.29 effort. Killed the old preference while I was at it. Reloaded fresh from the CD. Since the 1.29 read me says it'll update from any version, I went from the original install, *without* the 1.17g or 1.21g updates, directly to 1.29f(b2). Don't know if that made any difference, but there you have it.

Brad et al.,

Hope this is a problem that can be fixed here...

During GotmXXI, in the MA, I was not longer able to access the tech tree... each time I did so the game had an "unexpected error" and crashed.

I tried going through my advisor, the civilopaedia, through city production choices, etc. and no go.

What might the problem be?

Also, after a very viscious war(s) in the IA, I found that I somehow had permanent trade embargoes with the my Greco-Roman cousins. this lasted all the way till the end.

I checked with all the surviving Civs and none of them had an embargo with against them. Thoughts?

And finally, and a bit off the thread, if I want to reinstall CivIII and all the Gotm goodies, any tips and how would I install the game on my hard drive so I don't need the darn disc all the time?

Thanks (for your patience!)

Create a disc image w/ disk copy, see the mac tech thread. Tao has posted a very good step-by-step.
