Civ4 BTS v3.19 Patch

You need to search the forums/downloads to find if they have a newer version or patch. Many of the ones that have their own DLL were not updated, but some have been. 3.19 didn't require any changes to XML, but it significantly changed the DLL infrastructure.

I had the same problem with 3.13, but not this patch! (of course, I must add that since my game icon didn't install I still need the CD, and this new computer seems to be better with Civ4 than the last one I played on.

What??? Why on earth would they do that?

It's an unsuccessful attempt. I treat PC games the same as I always have. Unless I'm caught by the title and cover, I don't care. It's the same way I treat console games. I also judge it by advertising unless I know the series, i.e. Civilization, Call of Duty, &c.

So, in order for Microsoft to feel that its consoles are equal to PCs, you can no longer create a handy desktop icon to quick-launch your game? Why in Hell's name can that be considered even a remotely sensible idea?

No, the desktop icon isn't changed, you just have to go on a little scavenger hunt through your C:\ Drive. Once you find one that says, "Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword" or something along those lines, you right-click it and choose, "create shortcut." It will do so. You then move the shortcut icon to the desktop. But I found that out after four months. Also, the new Games for Windows stuff all are UAC sensitive when you run them with the CD.

What does "UAC sensitive" mean?

@ bestbrian: UAC sensitive means that when you do an action that is UAC sensitive, it prompts you to allow it, even if you're the admin.
@ deanej: You still use IE? You ought to use Opera or Chrome, they're 1000x faster in my opinion. Unless you have a mac, then I'm not sure.

I actually use three browsers - IE for my primary browsing on my laptop, Firefox portable on my flash drive, and Chrome for application view and as a secondary browser. IE 8 is actually quite fast when it's installed on a clean copy of Windows, though it can be quite slow if upgraded from a used copy of IE 7. Frankly, I'm kind of use to accelerators by now and miss them when absent.

I have a 8 Mb connection (6.4 Mb actual), so I just download stuff at night and it downloads very quickly, without need for an accelerator :P

Okay, so it's sensitive to UAC. What's UAC?

User Access Control. It asks you for the administrator password whenever you try to do something that only administrators should be able to do without forcing you to switch users. In the Unix world this is known as sudo (Super User DO).

By default XP assigns administrator privileges to the normal user you log on with to do your day-to-day work. This meant that a virus or trojan program that you launched would be able to do anything on your computer. With UAC, the "dangerous" operations that require administrator privileges are not allowed by that normal user without first entering the admin password.

UAC is easily a decent sized part of why I hate Vista. That's why I just turned it off. I'm the only user on my computer anyways.

Is that possible to turn those off? That would just be awesome :crazyeye:

Oh, I forgot I went back to XP anyway

I guess so. I've got Vista, and it never asks me for anything. It just fires up and goes. And I have icons for my games.

That's cause UAC isn't a big deal once your computer has been set up. Something everyone ignores. Everyone also ignroes that fact that UAC is actually less annoying than what you get with mac and linux (where you have to enter your password no matter what type of user account you have).

I just installed civ4 outside of Program Files and don't have to worry about the whole issue.

The UAC annoys me because for just clicking OK on some web pages, it asks you, but it doesn't require a password on mine because I'm the admin. Nobody has ever used my guest account that I know of.
