Civ4 complete civ4 and bts gfx disappear

I purchased Civ4: Complete for Vista yesterday. Being somewhat unfamiliar with the interface, I checked out the tutorial. I noticed the screen for periodically go black for about 3 seconds then re-appear, changing the resolution in the process. Specifically, the resolution would go from widescreen to a square in the middle of my screen. BtS also does this. The game appears to be functioning, only without the graphics. I got the message: 'driver igfx had stopped responding and has recovered'. My system meets & exceeds the recommended requirements listed on the game box.

Gfx Card: Intel Chipset expresss 965 <-- strong enough to run game, even if its not listed on back of box.

Processor: dual core 3.2 ghz.

RAM: 2 gigs

OS: Vista

Tried Re-install, didn't work.
