The SDK hasn't come out yet. This is not the SDK, this is a set of plugins for 3ds max that allows you to create new models for Civ4.

If you can excuse some super newbie questions, what is a mirror? do i need to download that along with the other thing there or what exactly do i download? You see these things always lose me when i go the sites becuase they keep sidetracking me to something else it seems i need to download. Thank you!

But people still have to purchase 3ds max??
I know there are 30 day trial periods available, but eventually modellers have to purchase the software, if I am reading this correctly.
And doe not this software cost something in the 4 figure range?

Ok now i have downloaded the 3dsmax7 and the plugin. I am not quite sure how to copy everything in the zipped civ4 maxTool v7 to the 3dsmax7. I tried copy the zipped maxtool and then pasting into the 3dsmax7, and all that did was make the zipped folder show up when i opened the 3dsmax7. i have no idea how to start it up. All i have is a zillion folders. Please help.

Ok everyone I sorta got the thing working now. I managed to make a tank with it. It will be hard to figure how to use basic shapes to form things like tank tracks and ship hulls. Its not unlike what you can do with msword making shapes and angleing them and moving them around till they form something.

Max = $700 if you are a student, $3,500 if you aren't. +$ to upgrade when new versions come out.

Blender = $0

I plan on doing everything in Blender, and exporting the special effects with 3ds max trial version near release of my mod..... if the folks at http://niftools.sourceforge.net/ don't have that capability added to their importer/exporter by then already.

Here is a screenshot of the carrier imported with the newest importer, and I have laready demonstrated buildings can be imported into Civ IV from Blender here

I am a little saddened, but not surprised Firaxis went the route of plug-in instead of exporter/importer, but I think the folks at Niftools will eventually come out with an exporter functional enough to port blender models to Civ IV, and then improve upon it to also include particle importer/exporters for special effects.

(Blender does not support realtime view of .dds files, so I had to convert the UVmap (aka skin) to a .png first to view it, and the transparent pieces are showing up as white (radar parts)

EDIT: also, the bones and armatures are already importable, which leads me to believe they are pretty close to gettign a good exporter... I would say 2 or 3 months at the most... plenty of time to learn the basics of Blender.. ;) )

Where are these plugins from? I'm wondering cause I'd like to know if there might be a version of the plugin for 3ds max 5.

So are you saying that Blender will do the same job as 3ds, and people won't have to sell their organs to afford to make models for CivIV?

They originate from Firaxis... as for a 3ds max 5 plugin.. I dont know.. but I doubt it...
I think these are the tools Firaxis used to make the graphics themselves.

Ok I thought of one.

Fear the Armored Car! Fear it!

Actually, it would be great to have military vehicles, and also the World War I bi-planes available. Not to mention we can finally have those star wars scenarios.

Mmm, could a mod be possible where after finishing the first round of Civ 4 (in marathon), after 2050AD, we can start a new mod in 2051AD which runs through 5050AD, with only space wars and cities of the future and the like.

Wow! Where did you get these from?

EDIT: Ok... Firaxis.

I shall change my question to:

Wow! How did you get your hands on these?

Firaxis...really, that's all we can say.
