Updated (missed the Pearls, good catch)

I don't get that sickfak. While it's true that stuff needs to happen, there will be more 'going on' in Civ 5 to begin with, what with social policies, more barb presence, and city state quests.

My understanding of the Social Policies is that they require Culture not Beakers. So in theory they won't slow techs at all.

He's not saying social policies will slow down techs, rather that each tech may take longer to research in civ5, but between techs you may gain another social policy or get a city state quest, etc. So there will be plenty of stuff keeping 'casual' players occupied, even if techs take longer to research.

Yes... and on top of that techs will be popping out frequently to make it even more fun! Fun, fun, fun, action, action, action! Yey!

Don't get me wrong, I'll be more than happy to be wrong, but I'm not holding my breath. It's safer this way. I rather be positively surprised than disappointed.

Any evidence for that?

If you do great and I'd like to see it, but otherwise I, personally, would rather base discussion on stuff which we know and extrapolate from that rather than have everyone just state unfounded opinions.

Look at IGN new video for example... There is also no reason not to think so...

There's also no reason not to think that there isn't a small teapot circling the sun somewhere between the Earth and Mars.

Ahaha indeed  I'm sure we'll find this teapot someday!

But did you see the video? to be more positive though, we can always hope that the game was on the quick setting AND that slower speeds are much slower...

It was on Quick speed (someone in the IGN thread did the numbers on the turns/dates), and +33% vs Barbarians suggest that it is on a pretty low level as well. Although you must keep in mind that to the average gaming journalist Chieftain plays like Immortal.

The tech tree on Arioch's site shows 8-9 turns for the current column of Medieval techs and 15 turns for the one after that. That combined with faster moving units should ensure that you get quite a bit of play out of specific units.

I think you should note in 'unit behavior' that a city has it's own unit that can attack/defend against invading forces. I believe I heard that in one of the video previews.

Cool

I really like the abilities, so much more variety and flavor than the traits in Civ4. I see hordes of Cossacks in Russia's future.
