Civ6's First Expansion: Who would you include?

Ah, forgot about her... However, she is something different, as she doesn't speak Greek in game and she leads Egypt, not Greece (or Macedon).
True, they (oddly) have her speaking Middle Egyptian, but she was still a 100% Hellene who ruled over a Hellenized civilization. She still contributes to the overrepresentation of the Hellenes.

Meh, still better than when Poland, Germany, Rome, Norway and France all appear in Europe... I played multiplayer with my brother, he was playing as France, I was playing as Brazil. I had both Americas for me, and he had so little space for cities - Germany couldn't even settle their capital :p

And even if Europe is quite overcrowded, I still want my Bohemia to appear :crazyeye:
I played a single game on Civ6's TSL map for the sole purpose of tormenting the AI: I chose as opponents Pericles, Gorgo, Alexander, Jadwiga, Cleopatra, Victoria, and Saladin. I was playing as China; by the time I made first contact Gorgo and Cleopatra had been eliminated and Saladin eventually followed suit. :p (For the curious: Victoria managed to keep hold of a small empire in northern Europe, Alexander took southern Europe and North Africa, Pericles expanded into Egypt, Arabia, and East and Central Africa, and Jadwiga controlled much of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, and Mongolia. I expanded into Korea, Southeast Asia, India, and eventually South Africa--no one ever colonized the New World.)

I thought Cleopatra learned to speak Egyptian language during her life...

I just want some more OTW choices instead of Europe so there are better odds for Europe not being overcrowded nearly every game :-P

Well, for the record, the US doesn't even seem to bother colonizing the new world. Just 4 or 5 cities then... snzzzzz.

She did indeed, the first Ptolemy to do so. The strange part is choosing Middle Egyptian, which is roughly the equivalent of having Teddy Roosevelt speak Anglo-Saxon. ;) The vernacular Egyptian at the time of Cleopatra was Demotic/Late Egyptian. There was a period in the New Kingdom when Middle Egyptian became a popular literary language, but that period ended long before Cleopatra VII.

It's much harder to find someone who knows late Egyptian though. Middle Egyptian is rather common, every Egyptologist learns it and there are some books around to teach it yourself as well. It's also much better reconstructed when it comes to pronunciation and better understood. I can understand why they went with it (after the decision that she should speak an Egyptian language).

True enough. To be honest I expected they'd just go with Coptic, given that it's still used as a liturgical language by the Coptic Orthodox Church and is arguably closer in time depth to Cleopatra than Middle Egyptian.

Strictly speaking Wang Kon/Taejo rebelled from Goryeo and founded Joseon.

There are 3 Taejos in Korean history Taejo of Goryeo is Wang Kon, who founded Goryeo, Taejo of Joseon was the person, who rebelled against Goryeo and founded Joseon and Taejo of Gorguyeo was one of longest reign monarch in the world and Korean history

I stand corrected. :)

First post!

My ideal 10 would be...

1. Korea (Queen Seondok or I'd honestly be fine with Sejong again. Would like to see them be either science, or late game cultural - maybe their unique building could be something related to kpop)
2. Canada (Justin Trudeau, I know - it's early -- but a current leader would be interesting, and he's insanely popular)
3. Mongolia (Genghis Khan - even though the game already has heavy calvary war)
4. Cambodia (Suryavarman II)
5. Netherlands (Queen Wilhelmina)
6. Georgia (Tamar)
7. Shawnee (Tecumseh)
8. Caribbean (this one... i'm not super well versed in the history, but this area always seems to be empty, and it could be a good way to do an island civilization without it being Polynesian)
9. Inca (Pachacuti)

Welcome! :D

2. Canada (Justin Trudeau, I know - it's early -- but a current leader would be interesting, and he's insanely popular)
There are a number of good reasons living and especially current leaders aren't chosen, though: it's hard to judge a leader's merit in his own time (especially since being a popular leader and being a good leader are not the same), it can stir up unwanted controversy, and I can't imagine there aren't legal issues--and even if the individual consented to the use of his/her image, there would be royalties to be paid (guess why Giselle is not an official Disney princess).

Welcome! :D

There's an extremely good reason why Trump, Putin, and Duterte aren't being suggested for Civ VI or any of its expansions, despite those three being very memorable leaders.

8. Caribbean (this one... i'm not super well versed in the history, but this area always seems to be empty, and it could be a good way to do an island civilization without it being Polynesian)

For the Caribbean, I prefer the Taino led by Anacaona. They dominated that area before Columbus came and weren't as primitive as people often think. Anacaona is a great choice for a female Amerindian leader, she would need some censorship for her attire though. :p

Yeah, I get that. My family is Canadian and like, the patriotic fervor for Justin Trudeau unrivals anything seen in the last twenty years. At least that's what my dad says.

Canadian here.

As much as I would like to have Justin Trudeau in, the same could be said about Trump, Putin, and Duterte, though I would like them all in. Unfortunately, the younger Trudeau, as well as Trump, Putin, and Duterte, are all too recent to be added in. Perhaps in a much later edition of Civ could they be added, after all four are deceased for at least 15 years.

Even though Firaxis tries to do certain things differently some continuities with previous expansions ought to remain.
Here are the old timers I fully expect to make a comeback in the first expansion.
  1. :c5war: Celts : They have always been an expansion civ and are pretty popular. I hope they'll base them on the continental Celts this time so Vercingetorix for leader.
  2. :c5science: Korea: Unless sneaking in via DLC earlier I'm sure we'll see them in the expansion. Probably a different leader than Jeseon this time thoguh.
  3. :c5faith: Byzantines: Same story as the previous two. Good candidate for religious civ. Hoping for somebody like Basil II or Nikephoros II.
  4. :c5razing: Ottomans: Surprised we haven't seen them make a comeback yet. They could end up arriving earlier with a DLC since their UU is in the Poland scenario.
The rest is really up to speculation and honestly anybody is possible from the Minoans to South Africa to Vietnam to the Cherokee.

Some new leaders for existing civs I'm hoping to see though:
  • Philip Auguste for France: Good old fashioned medieval king. We really could use more of these and he's one of France's greatest rulers.
  • Krushchev for the Russians: He's obviously the least controversial of modern Russian leader and responsible for things like the space race, the Khrushchew thaw and the idea of a peaceful coexistence of East and West. He could be different to previous Russian leaders by having a higher focus on science and diplomacy.
  • Ashoka for India: Would be nice to see a second leader for India. Still love you Gandhi no nukes plz...:c5razing:

We can be reasonably certain that Civ6's first expansion is under production. Civ5's expansions added 9-10 new civs each. Assuming that the new lineup will include 8 new civs and 2 new leaders, what would your ideal first expansion look like and why?

1. Mongols (Genghis Khan)
2. Phoenicia (Hanno the Navigator)
3. Maya (Lady Six Sky)
4. Mississippia (Great Sun)
5. Mali (Mansa Musa)
6. Celts (Brennus)
7. Minoans (Minos)
8. Soviets (Nikita Khrushchev)

9. Napoleon (France)
10. Akbar (India)

A commendable thread, and it's high time I posted my thoughts.

New Civs - Why not 10? We need to be on track for 50+ this time, and who knows how many more DLC there are.

1. Babylonians (Hammurabi or Nebuchadnezzar) - a classic, made all the more necessary by Sumer's poor showing
2. Incas (Pachacuti or another Sapa Inca) - South America is virtually empty, and they are the prime candidate
3. Ottoman Turks (Suleiman or Roxelana :p) - a well-known empire that lasted many centuries and has a sizable fanbase
4. Mayans (Siyaj K'ak' [Fire is Born]) - arguably the most important Pre-Columbian civilization
5. a Native American tribe - I've seen numerous suggestions that are quite feasible, including the Creek, the Haida and the Powhatan, though I think the Cherokee or Sioux are most likely
6. Mongols (Kublai Khan for a change) - obvious reasons
7. Koreans (Seondeok) - another highly important east Asian civilization, often an XP1 civ
8. Carthaginians (Hannibal, just because!) - popular, usually seen in XP1, more war elephants needed
9. Gauls (Vercingetorix) - a token European civ, since ancient Europe is underrepresented compared to medieval/modern Europe. The Dutch and Portuguese can wait their turn.
10. Malians/Songhai (Mansa Musa/Askia Muhammad) - use the two leader mechanism to include both of these neighboring empires with considerable overlap

Second Leaders

1. Ashoka (India) - because India is in desperate need of a non-Gandhi leader
2. Khufu or Akhenaten (Egypt) - a more ancient ruler for Egypt
3. Ivan the Terrible (Russia) - an eclectic choice for Russia, just imagine having both agendas secret
4. Alfred the Great (England) - the greatest English ruler, think of how cool it would be to have a leader speaking Old English
5. Isabella (Spain) - just because we know she was in development and has been in the works for some time

Honorable Mention

6. Louis XIV or Cardinal Richelieu (France) - a French leader for France

You are absolutely right an expansion should have had more than 10 new leader/competitors/options...at least 14 :deal:
