[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

I feel like that's one of those thing you could call either way as far as Civ6 goes.
In that case we are still missing another European civ since Byzantium is clearly located in the Middle East.:mischief:

I think Philippines is a possibility since they would be a new civ giving the NFP a 4/4 balance of new and returning plus I feel like the greater Pacific Ocean area is the only one not represented in the pass yet either.
I would like a Philippines Civ (what could be their bonueses?).
in worst case sceneario, I think they could be a fantastic commercial city state (Manila).

although the Phillippines are on a cultural continuum from the Indigenous Formosans to the greater Austronesian/Polynesian cultural sphere, they’re generally considered a Southeast Asian Country, so I doubt we’ll get them

Personally, I think Oceania or some kind of Polynesian group is the most likely civ so if Firaxis went heavy on the Polynesian aspect of the Philippines I could see them being included based on that. Hawaii seems like it would be obvious choice to me though.

i mean, the Phillippines is polynesian-adjacent, not polynesian in itself. No one would categorize Madagascar polynesian, so considering the Phillippines pacific islander or oceanian is possible (but tenuous) but you can’t really consider the Phillippines part of polynesia as a whole.

I’m Filipina myself and I have to emphasize that Filipinos and Polynesians are still Austronesian peoples.

that’s correct, but there’s still a distinction, which was my point

At this point it doesn't matter considering in your chart we got both Gran Colombia and Vietnam that ascended from city-states. Also where's Nubia?

That being said if Portugal does come, I would argue that the Mapuche could have taken the "Shoshone" slot as the other Native American civ. The only difference is they are located in South America.

Split Civs like Macedon, Nubia, and Scotland are considered offshoots and are a separate beast from other Civs. I will note that these Split Civs (as well as alternate Leaders & Personas) ONLY come from Gen 1 Staples. Holy Roman Empire is also split (& merged) from Germany. So there is no guarantee that they won’t simply be merged back into their parent Civ in future games. I could see them being represented as Alternate Leaders in the future.

So far, no slanted Civs come from a completely different region. Georgia and the Mapuche follow this pattern, unless we can tinfoil hat Georgia filling the slot of Morocco or Venice, there is no patterned evidence that the Mapuche are a substitute for the Shoshone.

The pattern *so far* would suggest that we get 1 entirely New Civ with a female Leader.

Please keep in mind that I am merely reconstructing whatever sort of outline and plans they came up with at Firaxis HQ through observation.

(My personal guess is *based off of* the pattern we’ve seen: a female Leader filling in the Shoshone’s slot from a new Civ: the Apache being a suspect Civ — seeing as they were important enough to be featured in Civ IV: Colonization, Lozen being a great Leader choice: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lozen)

The continental Americas were already covered by the first release and I feel like Liliuokalani and Hawaii would be an obvious choice then if the new civ and female leader pattern holds up.

Firaxis is an American company, and in American anthropology and popular views more generally the US/Canada is considered distinct from Mesoamerica and South America. I'm not saying the last civ will be a North American civ because I'm still 98% certain it will be Portugal, but if it's not Portugal than I think there's a 100% chance that the last civ will be from the US/Canada. Since Maori was clearly intended to be "all the Polynesians" with a specific name slapped on the label I find Hawai'i unlikely to be high on the devs' priority list.

Suddenly my most wanted DLC is not Portugal but Chaos Dwarves :p
*tinfoil hat on*
Could that mean we'll see a bearded lady from PNW?
*tinfoil hat off*

Firaxis has been pretty consistent with the areas of the world they have represented with NFP, with clear distinction with the duel releases.
-Maya/Gran Columbia: North(/Central) America and indigenous vs South American and European
-Gaul/Byzantium: Western Europe vs Eastern Europe (and "barbarian" vs "civilized" if you want to read it that way or maybe "decentralized" vs "centralized").
-Vietnam/Kublai: South Asia vs North Asia (don't know enough about Asian history if there is another distinction in there)

The Pacific/Oceania is the only major world area not in the NFP and the Americas are already well represented. Portugal would break the neat 4/4 that would be created by releasing a new civ as well. I think Portugal might be a reasonable pick if the NFP was the end of Civ6 but we don't know if NFP is the end and I think the rebalances that are coming in April are reasonable enough evidence of more Civ6 coming eventually.

Yeah I'd guess her too, or Nanye-hi or it could still be Haudenosanee.

The Pacific was never represented in the franchise at all until Civ5, and Maori has replaced "Polynesia."

the Americas are already well represented.
Conversely, Civ5 had two Native North American civilizations; Civ6 has one.

I take the opposite view. NFP is the end of Civ6. NFP is pure fan service. The April patch is the bow on top.

All the more reason to add more civs from the region then.

Maori has replaced "Polynesia."

Yet Firaxis has made an effort to break up larger groups into smaller, more distinct groups like the Maori vs Polynesia or Gauls vs Celts.

I was specifically referring to NFP but that is a definite blind spot in Civ6.

So, if Portugal is the last civ then the April patch is a nice cap stone but all of the available release patterns for NFP basically exclude Portugal from being the last release. Additionally, constant new expansions and patches, like in Destiny 2 or Fortnite, are clearly a big trend in gaming right now and can easily be applied to Civ6. Not to mention there is still a lot Firaxis can do with Civ6 if they want to, with stuff like alt leaders be very underutilized. Finally, Firaxis is clearly attempting to build a player base on consoles and at the end of NFP the game would only be out on PS and X-Box for a year and a half, with a longer release period on Switch. If they are serious about this then releasing Civ7 any time soon would be to early in my opinion as a console player. I've spent too much on Civ6 to buy Civ7 anytime soon but I image peoples opinion on that would vary.

Fundamentally though we will just have to wait to May, April, and maybe even later to find out the truth.

As a fan service product, I don't think it's constrained by the usual pattern. :dunno:

Well, as a PC player, I can't comment on how console players feel, but I feel like Civ6 has overstayed its welcome. NFP has displayed a marked drop in quality IMO, and I'd only be interested in more content if it returned to previous standards of quality.

Agreed.

That was my point, yes.

My point being if they are going that route then there is room for both. Otherwise why have Greece AND Macedon and so on.

I personally feel like the monthly releases combined with covid really hurt NFP and all of the game mode didn't seem to help in this regard either. Around either Gaul/Byzantium or Babylon they should have increased the release cycle to two or three months if not just delayed everything for like six months and then started up again. If there is more Civ6 I hope they won't go this route again and I hope they have learned their lesson about monthly releases, aka don't do them unless you are properly staffed for them. Even then, based on stories about Fortnite's development it doesn't sound like it is worth it.

I agree there's room for both, and TBH I'd rather see Hawai'i than Portugal. I just don't think Hawai'i is going to be very high on their priority list when Maori's overall design is strongly suggestive of "a specific label on a generic Polynesian civ."

Well why have dual leader tool and use it only four times. I don't think Macedon was as much desire to deblob things (otherwise we wouldn't have Greece in the first place) as simply to have Alexander the Great in the game.

And for every deblod there may be big blob, like going for larger Khmer instead of more specific Siam this time around, Phoenicia etc. Zaarin would probably count England too, since it got reworked into more British civ than England.
