cMM2 - STRANDED (easy level, tough map)

Doc: that's what my colleague said after playin it. And that's why I wanted to SG play it!

Turn 7 2310BD Nada

Turn 8 2270BC Nada

Turn 9 2230BC - well here's what we have to work with guys

sabo3save.jpg

Turn 10 2190BC Moving worker north

Turn 11 2150BC Moving worker North west

Turn 12 2110BC Western Worker finished road moved him on to bonus tile, eastern worker moved to within cullture grassland of UR gonig to mine and road there, had to crank lux slider up to 10% to keep pop 3 UR happy

Turn 13 2070BC Worker in UR started mining grassland, worker in Sumer Started roading on Bonus tile

Turn 14 2030BC Because of change in Luxery slider we are making -1 gpt, we have 7 gold left but UR will have temple in 3 so I'm going to leave it as is.

Turn 15 1990BC worker finished roading Bonus tile now UR and Sumer are connected, we finished researching Alphabet and now working for Writing, GEEZ I forgot to turn the lux sliider down the turn before we discoved Alphabet, sorry guys, but since we are done roading the Bonus tile we are now back to 0 GPT.

Turn 16 1950BC Started mining Bonus tile

Turn 17 1910BC Finshed Temple in UR and turned Lux slider back down to 0%
started on a settler in UR we'll have one in 6,

Turn 18 1870BC had to turn Lux slider up again as UR went to 4 pop

Turn 19 1830BC started roading the mine that just was finished in UR

Turn 20 1790BC Nada, look out though Danz Sumer is looking like it will riot next turn unless you crank up lux slider or make a comedian, it's your calll
You could always pop the goodie hut with a worker and start making some MP too.

Here's the save

Turn 50

jkp: that would be awfully tight I think. After all we do not want to go abandoning cities later.

Don't necessarily have to abandon it -- that fish'll let it grow a bit, and the extra trade/food at the beginning may give us more of a boost than a few extra pop points later? Especially w/o luxuries...I'm of the opinion that we should do everything we can to max commerce. Colossus, anyone...? :mischief:

Anyway, what's the consensus here -- are we going for maxing out our cities, or do we just want as many as possible?

Well if have a tighter build we should at least make sure that we have 12 tiles to work for each city, We won't have to worry about building past 12 until hospitals and hopefull by then we will find that other continent.

I was never one for this kind of numbers game....but can you work 12 shields if two cities are constructed within one hex of each other?

Also -- just throwing this question out there...what are we aiming at in this game? I assume conquest/domination is not likely? Are we going to try for culture?

Sorry for being slow, gents, it's been a busy RL weekend. I'll get on it in the next 24.

I thought Civ III WAS RL, you mean there's another world out there?

The only thing I changed at the start was the granary build in Ur. The city needs a cultural expansion to grab some nice fish, and anyway there is some much better worker pump land to the South, so I opted for a temple. We're going to need temples and MP in all cities soon, since we have no luxuries.

I continued to road toward the South throughout my turns.

The only noteworthy events were:

1650: Soul builds Pyramids, Lisbon builds Oracle. No other wonders were built.

1550: First curragh sinks, but it spent several turns sailing East, uncovering a large swath of sea and ocean. Interestingly, there is a sea lane, so once we have caravels, we'll be able to travel quite far in that direction without risk of sinking.

Two other curraghs were built. One sailed West and is still afloat on 1300 BC. It's been beatig the odds, surviving the open ocean the whole time. If our luck holds, it will be a miracle! Another curragh just left Ur and is waiting for orders. I'm thinking we should go South with this one.

I did put a city on the gold, two tiles way from Ur. I wish Ur was on the tip of the island 1 tile NW, but this is not too bad. I think that in this situation, trying to aim for the corners, maximizing territory, is more important than the BG itself. Once we have harbors, most of our citizens will be fishing, not farming. Anyway, we WILL be able to easily squeeze in 8 cities.

We have Writing and are researching Map Making. We have an archer (needed to put forest chop into something worthwhile) and an Enkidu warrior. We can easily pop out some more of those guys for MP in between settlers and workers. Our capitol is the best settler farm until we populate the area around the wheat.

On the dot map, you can see that by settling 2 desert squares and 1 hill, we can get our 8 citie required for an FP without wasting any grassland. Paving the desert is much more eco-friendly than paving farmland. Wish people did this in RL ;)

Yeah good playing Danz, how did you get 3 settler's built and settled in Despo in only 20 turns? And 3 curaghs too?? Tell me your secret.... :)

Wondering if maybe a philosophy slingshot to Mapmaking might be better than just researching it? Or perhaps it's too late to worry about that if we've been researching mapmaking for several turns already....?

I was struggling with this, since I so like to take advantage of Philosophy, but I thought that the odds of us getting it first very low. We have no idea what shape the rest of the world is in. I'm not even sure we can build the GL before a wonder cascade takes it away.

@sabo: Easy, just inherit a nice pair of cities with full food boxes, throw in two workers and a granary, and it's easy! The curraghs and foot soldiers pop out in between the settlers. The only hard part was managing happiness. I had to send two of Ur's citizens out fishing for two turns until the temple could be produced, otherwise I would have had to increase luxury spending. We have 2 MP's which can be sent to problem sities now, but we're going to need more, since our new cities are going to be very slow in producing temples.
