The only thing I changed at the start was the granary build in Ur. The city needs a cultural expansion to grab some nice fish, and anyway there is some much better worker pump land to the South, so I opted for a temple. We're going to need temples and MP in all cities soon, since we have no luxuries.
I continued to road toward the South throughout my turns.
The only noteworthy events were:
1650: Soul builds Pyramids, Lisbon builds Oracle. No other wonders were built.
1550: First curragh sinks, but it spent several turns sailing East, uncovering a large swath of sea and ocean. Interestingly, there is a sea lane, so once we have caravels, we'll be able to travel quite far in that direction without risk of sinking.
Two other curraghs were built. One sailed West and is still afloat on 1300 BC. It's been beatig the odds, surviving the open ocean the whole time. If our luck holds, it will be a miracle! Another curragh just left Ur and is waiting for orders. I'm thinking we should go South with this one.
I did put a city on the gold, two tiles way from Ur. I wish Ur was on the tip of the island 1 tile NW, but this is not too bad. I think that in this situation, trying to aim for the corners, maximizing territory, is more important than the BG itself. Once we have harbors, most of our citizens will be fishing, not farming. Anyway, we WILL be able to easily squeeze in 8 cities.
We have Writing and are researching Map Making. We have an archer (needed to put forest chop into something worthwhile) and an Enkidu warrior. We can easily pop out some more of those guys for MP in between settlers and workers. Our capitol is the best settler farm until we populate the area around the wheat.
On the dot map, you can see that by settling 2 desert squares and 1 hill, we can get our 8 citie required for an FP without wasting any grassland. Paving the desert is much more eco-friendly than paving farmland. Wish people did this in RL
