Lefty closed another thread with these words:

Now that force is frightening, but less so than 1 cranky moderator. I wish that you vets would NOT post in the spam threads.

Speaking as a presumed "vet," clearly, responsibility has transferred from the mod alone to the group.

Is this a call for collective security, on the model of the League of Nations Charter? Do we, as free citizens, have certain obligations to police threads collectively ourselves?

Discuss. :D

Um, no, not really.

We have an obligation to follow the rules. If we feel like it, we can remind others that they are in violation of the rules.

However, we are not obligated to do the latter.

Good idea, but it can get out of hand. Reminds me of an old fad at GameFAQs. A bunch of pissed off "vets" got mad at newbie spammers. They made an organization called GER or GRR, I forget the acronym. If they thought a thread was bad, they would spam it until the post limit, posting GRR over and over. The mods couldn't stop it, so there was a mass-banning.

A huge mass of angry posters is too much to bear. ;)

Four monks decided to meditate silently without speaking for two weeks. By nightfall on the first day, the candle began to flicker and then went out.

The first monk said, "Oh, no! The candle is out."
The second monk said, "Aren't we not suppose to talk?"
The third monk said, "Why must you two break the silence?"
The fourth monk laughed and said, "Ha! I'm the only one who didn't speak."

Really, no one should be spamming a spam thread, whether its a vet or a newer poster. Remind the person once about whatever they did wrong, direct them to the right way of doing it or the right place to post, and then let it be. :)

What will happen is Lefty and I will start banning you as examples.

Your choice.

We could make a sport of it. Do you bet on the track?:satan:

The one big, big, big flaw in the plan is this....

YOU TRY GETTING THE VETS TO AGREE ON ANYTHING!

:D

Misuse of the "report post" function is a BANNABLE offense, and one I find particularly annoying.

Best make sure you don't do that. ;)

I personally think that spam threads should be deleted. There are some people who just don't seem to be able to resist posting in every thread. The only reason that people post in them (spam threads) is to increase their postcount, and this would allow it to be readjusted backwards where it belongs. :)

On second thoughts - hide the postcount (again).
