Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Will there ever be a day when the refresh/reload button is no longer needed for internet browsing? will I ever get to look at the forums and witness threads/posts being posted real-time without refreshing?

I hope not

Thanks about the folder ... I deleted it and nothing seemed to happen so far.

Question: I finally got my school laptop last week. The store that set it up put F-PROT Antivirus on it. I usually use AVG, but is F-PROT good enough that I should just leave it? I cant seem to find any info on it

I hope so, sounds amazing. It's already possible with Facebook's thingy, it just takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes after the fact to pop up, but it does auto-refresh without changing the browser.

If the power goes out should I unplug a laptop. I usually unplug my desktop to keep power surges (remember I don't have a UPS).

Unplugging stuff during a thunderstorm, when there is a higher change of a surge may be a good idea, but otherwise I can't think of any reason why unplugging to unplug for the circuit. But if that's your goal, then yeah, desktop, laptop would be equally at risk (which is low). The only thing is, I'm not sure if a power surge would effect the laptop itself, or just burn out the converter on the wire.

realtime results will probably not ever be commonplace. It uses a lot of CPU power, which is fine for dedicated servers but not so great for shared/oversold servers.

Kapersky (spelling :hmm:) and Avira are pretty good, far better than AVG imo

I can't remember the original thread it was in, but my question concerns laptop varieties...

I remember reading in this forum, advising a poster to check out business laptops/computers for the longevity involved compared to consumer/home laps/pc's.

What was the reasoning behind this advice (assuming I remember it correctly)?

Will installing a new OS erase my games and other stuff? My Dad got Windows 7 install disks and I have a windows vista.

As a general rule business machines are higher quality because businesses make much larger purchases thus Computer companies want to leave a positive impression. It's a little convoluted

Generally, yes. You should be able to do an Upgrade Install from Vista to 7, so that should keep your programs. But if you don't do it right it will reformat your hard drive and you'll lose all your data.

Um my dad tried installing windows 7 on his computer(a vista) and afterward could not get on the internet. What could have happened? Also that's all I know.

Hard to say. Most likely Win7 didn't load the drivers for your ethernet. But without having the machine in front of me can't really say.

what he said.

Your best bet is to reinstall win7 and if that doesn't work then I would start looking at hardware problems.

Here is a good one. A linux program that logs how much data is transferred per process. Looking to see what kind of hosting plan I need for a better vpn server.

I would try wireshark. Get all packets for a period of time indicative of maximum bandwidth usage, then sort out by process. Haven't done this in a while though, so the details are fuzzy in my mind.

Are there any speaker systems that will work with both a PC and a TV? I want to be able to easily switch back and forth between the two.
